THE SKY IS FALLING -- ON KFC! PLEASE JOIN US!

Building upon the momentum of the successes achieved against the fur industry, some of the same volunteers in Portland are continuing the energy and applying our passion to relieve animal cruelty in the form of activism against the fast-food industry -- the focus is on KFC. We wish to welcome the PETA KFC Activist Liaison, Nicole, who is coming to Portland to guide us and tour our beautiful city before returning to the East! KFC is a self-declared fast-food giant and industry leader, yet they regularly cut the beaks of baby birds, pump chickens so full of hormones that they grow to the point where their own legs cannot support them, and remove the birds' feathers by scalding them alive in tubs of boiling water. During an undercover investigation at a KFC "Supplier of the Year" slaughterhouse in Butterfield, Missouri -- owned by George's, Inc. -- it was documented that live birds were being thrown by workers and crushed by metal dumping machines. Birds were often impaled by mangled transport cages, and workers were instructed to simply yank them out when this happened; PETA's investigator saw workers doing this and found dismembered limbs left behind in cages after the birds had been removed. Birds also got stuck in the spring-loaded doors of the cages, and workers whacked them with metal poles in order to push the doors open, sometimes impaling the live birds. One morning, PETA's investigator saw roughly 50 "red birds" -- the ones who are scalded to death in defeathering tanks while they're still conscious. Please join many activists next week at our peaceful protests in front of different Kentucky Fried Chicken fast-food joints on the east side in Portland, beginning on Monday, June 25, 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m., at 707 N.E.Weidler. On Tuesday, June 26, meet at the KFC at 8131 S.E. Powell Blvd., 12 noon - 1:00 p.m. On Wednesday, June 27, meet at the KFC at 6835 N. Lombard St., 12 noon-1:00 p.m. (at this venue we'll offer a vegan feed-in along with our outreach!). On Thursday, June 28, come to the KFC at 707 N.E. Weidler St., 12 noon - 1:00 p.m. We're going to enjoy a vegan lunch after our outreaches, and will meet for dinner on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Red and Black Cafe, 2138 S.E. Division. Six KFC's have been closed and one potential new one decided not to open because of the work of dedicated volunteers. Please come and help us inform the public about the plight of over 20 million of these birds each year. (P.S.: Ask us why Greenpeace is suing KFC too!)
