Behind the Robe - How the Tibetan Cause shelters Sex Abuse by Tibetan Clergy in America

After speaking with a number of Tibetan Buddhist Clergy Rape Victims in America, Tibetans, Tibetan Buddhist clergy members, authorities and academics on the political situation in the Tibetan Autonomous Region, there are many speculations about how with 500 million followers, the Dalai Lama's monastic order can maintain such a pristine image. Several rape victims have reported that religious double speak and twisting of dogma is often pervasive amongst Tibetan Buddhist clergy members who want to cover up deviant sexual behavior.
Conspiracy theories and excuses of the situational ethic variety run the gamut: The perpetrator list includes the following teachers in theTibetan Buddhist lineage: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osel_Tendzin Michael Lyons a.ka. Dr. Mohan (3 warrants out for his arrest) http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2006/03/29/former_tibetan_monk_faces_rape_charge/ Christopher Hansard (lawsuit pending) Sogyal Rinpoche (court case - 10 million dollar lawsuit) Geshe Michael Roach Ch?gyam Trungpa Kalu Rinpoche Abbot Khenpo Chime Tsering (court case in NYC) Lama Ole Nydahl - (lawsuit pending) 1.The Dalai Lama was on the CIA payroll for over fifteen years, 2.Public outcry in America against wrongdoings in the Tibetan community or by Tibetan Buddhist clergy will only further disenfranchise its members and displaced youth who may copycat jihadists out of anger, 3.Tarnishing the Tibetan image will hurt their chance for autonomy, 4.Tibetan Buddhist monks are celibate and do not partake in earthly sexual delights, 5.Tibetan Lamas and clergy need more psychological support as they are victims of human rights abuses and genocide, 6.The Dalai Lama's presence in America and Buddhism is an alternative to Islam, 7.His Holinesses' tours and public teachings serve to help the United States government imbue peace and compassionate thinking amongst a disgruntled, American public who are outraged by the war in Iraq, 8.Buddhists also hold apocalyptic-type beliefs, if bad things are said about Buddhism, Maitrea Buddha (check Tibetan Maitrea) or the savior of the Buddhist followers will not return to lead them into salvation, 9.The patriarchal monastic community that comprises a large portion of the Dalai Lama's administration holds very misogynistic views, as women are considered distractions on the path to Enlightenment, 10.Fundamentalism and extremism exist in Buddhism too, American Survivors of Tibetan Buddhist Clergy Abuse Speak Out Several rape victims have reported that religious double speak and twisting of dogma is often pervasive amongst Buddhist clergy members who want to cover up deviant sexual behavior: 1. Rape is a female problem brought on by its victims especially by all of those sexually aggressive American women, 2. By keeping quiet about his or her incident, a rape victim can learn to be a better Buddhist and join in the human struggle to end all suffering for "sentient beings, 3.A Rinpoche and/or Lama's spiritual energy or chi power can protect students from the HIV virus, 4.A student will never reach enlightenment if he/she speaks out about the rape, 5.Students who want to speak out about sex abuses will create curses and bad karma for many lifetimes to come, will never be saved and remain in a "hell realm" full of demons and devils, 6.Traditional Tibetan culture is very superstitious and holds patriarchal views that seem old fashioned and backwards to Western women - rape victims have been told to just be compassionate about these differences of opinion, 7.Rape helps to teach a student surrender to the master, 8.Feminist views of independence are only held by domineering, American women, 9.Sexual roles are dualistic - Buddhist rhetoric encourages "non-dualistic" thinking amongst the sexes to combat gender stereotypes, which many therefore loosen a student's attachments the need for worldly, ego-driven, personal and material desires, 10.If a rape victim wants to speak out in public about the incidence, he or she has not learned to develop a deep sense of compassion for herself or the perpetrator, 11.Having sex with a Tibetan Buddhist clergy member is an esteemed honor and will create good karma for the student, 12.The concept of Tantra and Tantric sex are often confusing to students especially with regard to sexual practices and the spiritual teacher, 13.Dehumanizing language evokes conditioned fear-type responses in a lay practitioners, terms such as wrathful deity, demons, devils, vampires, warrior's path, and energy sucker" are commonly used to instill "the wrath of Buddha" in the victim, 14.Examination of sexual and power abuses by Tibetan Buddhist clergy will do real damage to the reputation of authentic and ethically based Tibetan Buddhist teachers, Should any of these aforementioned reasons serve to dilute a rape victim's pain or experience? The Dalai Lama has many intense enemies. But most of them identify themselves. This seems like an excercise in innuendo. A possible attack disguised as some sort of feminist diatribe. Maybe I'm wrong, but I've never heard of a major predator problem among Buddhists. Seems to be a bigger Catholic problem, and that's the point. It sounds believable. Postings like this don't really enlighten, and giving Wikpedia definitions as footnotes is pretty weak backup. I'd be more impressed if this were a first hand account of predatory behaviour.

just comes down to: 30.May.2007 12:26

...hierarchy and patriarchy suck. Patriarchy is enforced by rape.

Having said that, there's a lot of good psychological and metaphysical insight in Buddhism, which really shouldn't be considered a religion (though in some forms it is a religion).

And the CIA pay to the Dalai Lama, remember, was part of the CIA's attack on the Chinese, which included attempted infiltrations by nutcase Christian fundamentalists. The Dalai Lama was a feudal cipher back then, and didn't know the CIA from peanuts.

Some Buddhism needs reform, and in some cases it's getting it. Compare it to Catholicism, which just gets worse, in terms of abuse of nuns and altar boys. Our greatest benefit is to observe these cultural phenomena rationally. For example, Sisters of the Road Cafe, incredible as it may seem, is a Catholic organization, a great asset to the community. That doesn't change the fact that the Pope is a disgusting bigot.

Time for some real solutions worldwide 30.May.2007 14:59

by womyn

After centuries of misery under all religious patriarchal institutions surely womyn are ready to organize effectively given the knowledge that they have accumulated and the economic power that they hold in societies.
Nothing will change, on the contrary things can only get worse with the fascist new world order on the rise once again, until womyn organize anti-patriarchy political action parties. This new type of party based on the power that womyn really hold due to their labor, their role in child rearing can really be effective if the womyn leading the party are not the opportunistic self-serving types who fear political actions (like calling for official boycotts of big business and of churches who promote the Patriarchy, etc., etc.) Womyn's anti-patriarchy parties in each country supporting each other's actions can lead to revolutionary changes the likes that the world has never yet seen.
COME ON SISTERS, WE HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE BUT OUR CHAINS and we can save Mother Earth from doom in the process!

it's true but it's old news 30.May.2007 15:36

Please check your sources-some of these dudes died years ago. Let's keep indy accurate.

it's happening in Qom, Iran too. Qom is the Shiite learning center. 30.May.2007 23:15

sattar khan

the government will not let this stuff out in Iran, but its been happening for decades.

one problem is Iran's judicial system, even under the shah would not allow victims to file law suits against clergy. Class actions are out of the question.

Once the Islamic regime falls, we should see thousands of people looking for justice.

Think Critically 16.Feb.2008 12:50

I feel sympathy for you for not understanding the true essence of Buddhism. This paper is really bias. You did not even dare to put your name in the paper. Your name is not anonanon, of course. I know anon stands for anonymous. Are your sources even reliable? I don't understand why there are so many people like you out there who want to persuade others with negative information. What good will you get from it? Buddhism and Buddhists never even harm other religions. I think you feel threaten and unsafe with the truth Buddhism offers. That's why you did this, to persuade those who are still unsure about "the truth." Let me give you a quote from the Buddha: "Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense."
So, please think critically and know the truth before sharing that information to others. Thank you.
