Urge your Representatives to Support COOL Implement Country of Origin Labeling! Take Action!
As part of the 2002 Farm Bill, Congress passed a law requiring mandatory country-of-origin labeling (COOL) for agriculture products. Five years later, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has yet to implement the law.
COOL has been delayed until September 2008 and NFU is leading the way to move this date up one year, to September 2007. NFU believes consumers deserve the right to know where their meat comes from and producers deserve the right to proudly market their products ³Made in the U.S.A.²
Consumer surveys have consistently shown overwhelming public support for mandatory COOL and the implementation of mandatory COOL on farm-raised and wild-caught seafood has proven successful and popular. However, Congress¹ backdoor delays and the mis-leading rhetoric of packers, processors and retailers continue to deny consumers a country of origin label.
The time has come for Congress to act and implement the funding necessary for USDA to implement mandatory COOL.
Your representatives in Congress need to hear your support for mandatory COOL. Urge them to change the date of implementation to September 2007.Contact your representative today by calling 202-224-3121, or by entering your zip code above and hitting ³Go!² to e-mail your legislators.
