What possible intelligence could we gain from those being held there? Why can they not be subjected to a real trial? In a previous post [ http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2006/12/350913.shtml ], I speculated that many of these prisoners were in fact being used as guinea pigs in psychological experiments. I just saw this story from the Globe and Mail:
Victim owed compensation in CIA case, judge told
Montreal woman who was experimented on should receive reparations, lawyer says
link to www.theglobeandmail.com
"Patients were put in isolation, tied down or drugged, and subjected to hours and hours of taped recordings meant to brainwash them at the behest of the Central Intelligence Agency."
Now compare that with the alleged treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo:
"In the early days, dogs were used to intimidate prisoners. Detainees were subjected to sleep deprivation and earsplitting rock and rap music. Some, including al-Zamil, said they were shackled in uncomfortable positions for hours."

[For that matter, compare these stories with the fates of Americans Donald Vance (a whistleblower) http://civilrightsdefense.rockfuscollc.com/2006/12/articles/new-lawsuits/donald-vance-files-suit-against-donald-rumsfeld/ and Jose Padilla http://civilrightsdefense.rockfuscollc.com/2006/12/articles/new-lawsuits/donald-vance-files-suit-against-donald-rumsfeld/ and Jose Padilla link to glenngreenwald.blogspot.com ]
I wear an orange ribbon on my jacket. When people ask me what it's for, I tell them it means I want Gitmo shut down.
Currently there are 11 hunger strikers in Guantanamo Bay Prison. http://www.freemarketnews.com/WorldNews.asp?nid=31058
The fact that this prison exists at all besmirches our identity as Americans. Something tells me that Guantanamo Bay Prison is only the tip of the iceberg. How many illegal prisons do "we" as Americans sponsor? What kinds of unspeakable things take place there! Let all decent Americans take a stand and close them down! Not in our name! NOT IN OUR NAME!

You know as well as we all do that we only see the tip of the iceberg.
If congress really served the people and not the corporations, then these victims would all be compensated fairly and the perpetrators put in prison as the criminals they are.
