I stopped by the Mexican consulate today as well. I found a small but dedicated group of demonstrators outside, with word of a larger action planned for tomorrow. Representatives from the Native Youth Movement, Jobs for Justice, IWW, Portland Indymedia, and others were there today.
I went inside the building briefly, in the hopes of interviewing someone in an "official" capacity about the position of the Mexican government on the situation in Oaxaca. I was told that the consulate was out of the building, but I was assured by his assistant that he will get back to me. Perhaps. While inside, I did learn from several of the people crammed inside the very crowded building, waiting in line for services, that the situation is weighing heavily on the minds of the People of Mexico, both here in the US and in Mexico. When I got back outside, a comrade pointed out that there were fliers plastered across the wall near the front entrance, and also on the front door, condemning the police and government violence in Oaxaca.
I left around 1pm. (Had to get back to work.) People were still there with banners, candles, and signs, and as I walked away, they were chanting boisterously.
