Northwest Resistance Against Genetic Engineering Food news!

August 2006

Summer is an exciting time of the year. There are
four great events that are just around the corner.
Mark your calendars! Coming soon are two new
farmer's markets in the Portland area that offer a
fresh variety of fruits and vegetables. Also
offered this month are two great seed saving
workshops and a presentation from a best seller
author on the dangers of genetic engineering!
Check the Alberta Street Farmer's Market. The
market is going on every Saturday from 11am to 3pm,
and Last Thursdays too, through August 26th. Alberta
co-op is located at the corner of NE 15th and
Alberta in Portland.

Also check the Lent's Farmer's market which
will be going strong on Aug. 27 and Sept. 24 from
9am-2pm at the corner of SE 92nd and Foster. Join us
for some adventuresome food shopping!

Jeffrey Smith, author of Seeds of Deception,
the world's bestselling book on genetically engineered
foods, will be giving a talk at the Peoples Food
Co-op, at 3029 SE 21st Ave, (between SE Powell &
Division), on Wednesday, August 9th at 6pm in the
Upstairs Community Room. The event is free and there
will be free ice cream as well.
The presentation is on: The Health Dangers of
Genetically Engineered Foods and their Cover-up.

Two great Workshops will be held at Tabor Tilth
Urban Farm the second weekend of August.
Beginning Seed Saving for Urban Gardeners
will be taught by Connie Van Dyke on August 12th
(10am to noon). Come learn the basics on why and
how to save your own seed at this free workshop.

On August 13, Intermediate and Advanced Seed
Saving for Urban gardeners will be taught by
Heather Smith (10am to 2pm). Join representatives
from Portland Tilth, Oregon Tilth, NW RAGE, and
Growing Gardens for this free workshop covering
advanced seed-saving topics including minimum
populations and isolation distances, selection,
pollination, harvest,
cleaning, storage and more. We'll be outside, so be
sure to bring comfortable shoes, sunscreen and a
sack lunch.

Both Workshops will be held at Tabor Tilth Urban
Farm, 2625 SE 61st ($3-10 suggested donation to
Growing Gardens). Contact Connie Van Dyke at
503-788-4520 for more details.
