Come learn about North American political prisoners from 4-6 PM, and write a letter or a birthday card to one of them. You can use our mailing address if you want, and we'll mail responses to you or contact you when responses arrive. Information about Eco-defense prisoners and SOA Watch prisoners will be available. You can educate yourself about these folks by checking out www.soawatch.org and www.greenscare.org.
Even if you don't want to make a long-term commitment to writing someone behind bars, there will be a list of birthdays available so you can send off a birthday note to one or more people serving time as a result of their politically-driven actions. Letters mean a lot to people behind bars, and birthday cards are a great way for us to express appreciation for these folks.
Then at 6 pm, watch and discuss 2 films, one by the Prison Moratorium Complex, a group that is working to address problems of youth incarceration in New York City.
The other film is called "Dispatches: The Killing Zone", and was produced by the BBC after the murder of Rachel Corrie by an Israeli military operated Caterpillar bulldozer, depicting the horrific targetting of International Solidarity Movement activists, as well as the deliberate attacks on journalists in the Gaza Strip in Palestine. The deliberate targetting of journalists continues to this day, and now israeli atrocities have intensified once again to accomplish their apparent goal; total decimation of the infrastructure and lives of of not only those who live in Gaza, but now also of everyone in Lebanon, including the murder of 4 UN observers last week.
It is in honor of those who are being continually brutalized by the Israeli military war machine, funded by U.S. taxpayer dollars, that some of us at Books To Prisoners have decided to substitute our previously scheduled film with The Killing Zone, a BBC production, that is available to show to the public for educational purposes. The BBC was banned from filming in Israel after this film was produced. Israel completely controls Gaza's airspace, coast, and borders, making Gaza the biggest prison in the world, housing around 1.3 million Palestinians, about 33% of whom live in United Nations-funded refugee camps.
