Try as I may, I just can't figure out how to comment on the tragic, but definitively diabolical Israeli invasion of Lebanon, supported as it is by rush shipments of "precision guided munitions" and "experimental weaponry" from the Bush Administration. I should say however, that it is clearly designed as part of the desired larger regional war involving Syria and Iran. Perhaps it's best to let Israel Shahak, former professor at Hebrew University in Jerusalem comment for me:
"The wish for peace, so often assumed as the Israeli aim, is not in my view a principle of Israeli policy, while the wish to extend Israeli domination and influence isâ· Israel is preparing for a war, nuclear if need be, for the sake of averting domestic change not to its liking, if it occurs in some or any Middle Eastern states... Israel clearly prepares itself to seek overtly a hegemony over the entire Middle East..., without hesitating to use for the purpose all means available, including nuclear ones."
Fortunately and to their credit, some Israeli citizens are protesting, calling on soldiers to refuse to serve. One of my colleagues who has friends in Israel always reminds me that there are many peace activists in Israel. Here's the latest from Tel Aviv:
"Thousands march in Tel Aviv to protest Lebanon fighting, call on soldiers to refuse taking part in war. Clashes with passersby erupt during event, activists called 'traitors'.
Thousands of left-wing activists, including many Arab citizens, marched Saturday evening from the Rabin Square to the Cinematheque plaza in Tel Aviv in protest of the fighting in Lebanon. The protestors held up signs with slogans against the war and called for an immediate ceasefire. According to the demonstrators, a prisoner exchange deal with Hizbullah must be struck, as well as a similar deal with Hamas. Marchers also urged IDF soldiers not to take part in the Lebanon operation, chanting: "Listen up, soldier, it's your duty to refuse." Other slogans recited by the participants were: "The occupation is a disaster, leave Lebanon now," "Olmert and Bush have struck a deal--to carry on with the occupation," and "Children in Beirut and Haifa want to go on living."
As Mr. Ahmed notes below, Daniel Ellsberg, the famous attorney who revealed the existence of the Pentagon Papers figures prominently in the news these days. Appearing on the Genesis Communications Network, Mr. Ellsberg had this to say:
"[In the event of]... another 9/11 or a major war in the Middle-East involving a U.S. attack on Iran, I have no doubt that there will be, the day after or within days an equivalent of a Reichstag fire decree that will involve massive detentions in this country, detention camps for middle-easterners and their quote 'sympathizers', critics of the President's policy and essentially the wiping-out of the Bill of Rights.

Our intelligence sources report that the Israeli Defense Force attack on Lebanon is being carried out as a joint Israeli-U.S. military operation. Moreover, there are joint Israeli and U.S. war rooms coordinating the U.S.-supported Israeli attacks on Lebanon. The ultimate aim of Washington and Jerusalem is not only to eliminate Hezbollah as a political force in Lebanon but also to remake Lebanon as an American and Israeli client state.
Israeli forces are pounding parts of Lebanon, especially in the north, where there are no Hezbollah units and primarily Christian populations. In addition, Israeli forces are being aided by the Bush administration with high-resolution overhead imagery from U.S. spy satellites and signals intelligence (SIGINT) intercepts from National Security Agency assets, including SIGINT satellites.

The result of U.S. intelligence support for Israel is directly linked to the targeting of particular locations, including the Israeli launch of 24 high-explosive missiles on a block of ten buildings in south Beirut. The entire block was leveled in the attack. The deliberate Israeli attack on a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) outpost in southern Lebanon was the result of that post gaining information of Israeli atrocities committed against the civilian Lebanese population.
The Israeli attack, called deliberate by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, killed blue helmet peacekeepers from China, Finland, Canada, and Austria. Israeli continued to attack the UN post even as rescuers attempted to locate survivors in the rubble of the building. The deliberate 1967 Israeli attack on the USS Liberty, an NSA spy ship monitoring communications during the Arab-Israeli Six Day War, was the result of the Liberty intercepting Israeli communications on the massacre by Israeli forces of surrendering Egyptian prisoners of war in Sinai. Israeli planes continued to attack the ship, even after it raised a large American flag. U.S. Navy and NSA survivors in the water were also strafed by Israeli aircraft.

Israel's deliberate attack on a UN peacekeeping outpost in southern Lebanon represents a new departure in Israel's war against Lebanon. The attack is being called a mistake by the Israeli government and its Bush administration patrons. Unconfirmed US ambassador to the UN John Bolton is a known opponent of the UN system, having once called for the destruction of the top ten floors of the UN Secretariat Building in New York. The US and Israeli Missions to the UN, always working in complete lockstep, are now spinning that the Israeli attack on the UN outpost was because Hezbollah placed weapons near the facility.
The last time UN peacekeepers were deliberately targeted was in 1994 when 10 Belgian blue helmets assigned to the UN Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) were savagely murdered by rampaging Hutus after the shoot down of the presidential aircraft carrying the Hutu Presidents of Rwanda and Burundi by members of U.S.-supported Paul Kagame's Rwanda Patriotic Army forces. In 2005, Congolese guerrillas killed nine MONUC Bangladeshi and one Nepali UN peacekeepers in Ituri province. In 1976, two US Army soldiers operating under UN aegis were hacked to death by North Korean troops at the demilitarized zone's Panmunjom "truce village." In none of these cases was it proven that the assaults on the UN troops were carried out with the knowledge of the governments concerned.
As UNIFIL peacekeepers were assisting in the evacuation of civilians from Lebanon, one of their headquarters in Khiyam, Lebanon was bombed by Israel, killing four blue helmets.
The UN currently maintains peacekeepers around the world who have not faced deliberate attacks by UN member states.
These include UN missions in Western Sahara (MINURSO), the Ethiopian-Eritrean border (UNMEE), Liberia (UNMIL), Burundi (ONUB), Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI), Sudan (UNMIS), Haiti (MINUSTAH), Kashmir (UNMOGIP), Cyprus (UNFICYP), Georgia-Abkhazia (UNOMIG), the Golan Heights (UNDOF), and Kosovo (UNMIK). UNOMIG is now under threat by a Georgian invasion force, backed by U.S. "advisers," that entered the Kodori Gorge in Abkhazia.
The Georgian military move, condemned by Russia, follows by a few weeks President Bush's meeting in Washington with Georgian neo-con President Mikhail Saakashvili. The Kodori Gorge is only 20 miles from Sukhumi, the Abkhazian capital. Any further movement by Georgian forces and their U.S. advisers risks a military confrontation with Russian troops in Abkhazia.

The public record is replete with 'historical' accounts of the cause and effect of the many wars enjoyed by the sprawling masses of humanity. A little known fact however is that, from the point of view of accuracy, the public record stinks.
Spinning the truth about the reasons for war has always been easy. With the major media magnets donating large sums to political parties, and war reports pre-approved by military press liaison officers, military, government and media quickly take on the appearance of one big, happy family.
In the case of the current Israeli invasion of Lebanon therefore, you will (or should) be somewhat less than surprised to learn that all is not as it seems.
To begin our impromptu lesson in reality, a few brainteasers:
What event precipitated the current Israeli invasion of Lebanon? Was it the 'unprovoked' attack by Hamas on the Israeli post when Corporal Shalit was captured? Or was it the 'unprovoked' attack by Hizb'allah when they captured two Israeli soldiers two weeks later?
According to most mainstream papers and American and Israeli government officials, the Hamas attack on June 25th that led to Shalit's capture was an unprovoked act of aggression. What they fail to mention however, is that the day before the Hamas attack, on June 24th, Israeli troops entered Gaza and abducted two Palestinian civilians http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5112846.stm, a doctor and his brother. The Israeli army asserted that the men were members of Hamas, a claim which Hamas refuted. So what's new?
Also according to the oh-so reliable mainstream press http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5171616.stm, on July 12th, Hizb'allah captured two Israeli soldiers "in a cross border raid", which Israel called an "act of war" and which provided plausible justification for the current massive Israeli bombardment of Lebanon and its civilians. However, according to several non-Western or foreign language news agencies, it was /Israeli soldiers who had invaded Lebanese territory/, leading to the capture of two of their number by Hizb'allah, an expected conclusion to a foolish foray into enemy territory and definitely /not/ an "act of war". Indeed, in this light, it is Israel that is guilty of provoking Hizb'allah.
The Indian Daily tells us:
The Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah movement announced on Wednesday that
its guerrillas have captured two Israeli soldiers in southern
Lebanon. "Implementing our promise to free Arab prisoners in Israeli
jails, our strugglers have captured two Israeli soldiers in southern
Lebanon," a statement by Hezbollah said. "The two soldiers have
already been moved to a safe place," it added. The Lebanese police
said that the two soldiers were captured as they "infiltrated" into
the town of Aitaa al-Chaab inside the Lebanese border. [New Kerala

According to the Bahrain News Agency:
The Lebanese Hezbollah movement announced Wednesday the arrest of
two Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon. Lebanese police said that
the two soldiers were arrested as they entered the town of Aitaa
al-Chaab inside the Lebanese border. Israeli aircraft were active in
the air over southern Lebanon, police said, with jets bombing roads
leading to the market town of Nabatiyeh, 60 kilometers south of

The strange thing is, almost all English language Western news reports proclaimed loud and clear that Hizb'allah had invaded Israel! How can this be?

JERUSALEM (AP) - Here's some news you may never hear about Israel's
war against Hezbollah: a missile falls into the sea, a strategic
military installation is hit, a Cabinet minister plans to visit the
front lines.
All these topics are subject to review by Israel's chief military
censor, who has - in her own words - "extraordinary power." She can
silence a broadcaster, block information and put journalists in jail.
"I can, for example, publish an order that no material can be
published. I can close a newspaper or shut down a station. I can do
almost anything," Col. Sima Vaknin said Wednesday. [...]
Now think about this for a moment. Say Israel had drawn up plans for a military invasion/attack on its Arab neighbors for some time, but was in need of some kind of justification, some rationale that could be presented to the world public. How easy would it be to /stage the capture of an Israeli soldier in Gaza and two in Lebanon?/ Soldiers are not privy to intelligence information, unless their superiors supply it to them, and they are entirely dependent on their military commanders to not place them in danger. But in war, or war planning, all is fair, as they say.
But what evidence is there to suggest that Israel had been planning to provoke a wider Middle East war for some time?
Not much, just that provided by the Israeli military itself:

Israel's military response by air, land and sea to what it
considered a provocation last week by Hezbollah militants is
unfolding according to a plan finalized more than a year ago.
In the years since Israel ended its military occupation of southern
Lebanon, it watched warily as Hezbollah built up its military
presence in the region. When Hezbollah militants kidnapped two
Israeli soldiers last week, the Israeli military was ready to react
almost instantly.
"By 2004, the military campaign scheduled to last about three weeks
that we're seeing now had already been blocked out and, in the last
year or two, it's been simulated and rehearsed across the board."
said Gerald Steinberg, professor of political science at Bar-Ilan
University
More than a year ago, a senior Israeli army officer began giving
PowerPoint presentations, on an off-the-record basis, to U.S. and
other diplomats, journalists and think tanks, setting out the plan
for the current operation in revealing detail. Under the ground
rules of the briefings, the officer could not be identified.
Notice the newsroom spin that the plan was drawn up because Hizb'allah was "building its military presence in Southern Lebanon." If Hizb'allah has any military prowess they certainly have a strange way of flaunting it. Since the beginning of the Israeli bombardment of Lebanon, Hizb'allah has fired hundreds of their "deadly" weapons at Haifa (the only Israeli town within reach), resulting in the death of 15 Israeli civilians, 2 of them Israeli Arabs. About 95% of Hizb'allah's rudimentary 'Katyusha' rockets miss their targets or fail to explode, or both, in very much the same way as Hamas' and Islamic Jihad's 'Qassam' rockets fired from Gaza, which have killed 5 Israelis in one town in 5 years. A real 'threat' to the state of Israel indeed.
Remember last year, when the Israeli Mossad murdered Rafik Hariri? http://www.signs-of-the-times.org/signs/Hariri_Mossad.php Hariri had been Lebanese Prime Minister from 1992 until 1998 and again from 2000 until 2004 when he resigned. By all accounts, he was slated to return to the position again at the next elections. Apart from being a billionaire, Hariri had a lot of friends in high places. He was as happy enjoying a beer with French President Chirac in down-town Beirut as he was strolling the halls of Boston University's School of Management which bears his name.
Hariri was one of the few "men of peace" left in the Middle East. In his two terms as Lebanese PM since 1992, he had brought Lebanon out of the carnage wrought by 15 years of civil war and set it well on the way to reclaiming its status as the "Paris of the Middle East." Hariri willingly expended his personal fortune on Lebanon's recovery pouring millions into the reconstruction of Beirut. Viewed as a leading Arab-world reformer, he was also credited with restoring Lebanon's reputation abroad as a liberal, open Middle Eastern country. He paid for the 1989 Christian-Muslim peace conference in Taif, Saudi Arabia, which laid the foundation for the ceasefire that came a year later. During his tenure as Prime Minister, Harari also made it his goal to ensure that the religious divisions (Christian and Islamic) were kept out of politics.
Since 1976 and until last summer, 14,000 Syrian troops were stationed in Lebanon. The troops had initially arrived in 1976 at the request of the Lebanese government in order to protect the Lebanese population from Israeli attacks. When Mossad murdered Hariri, not only did they remove the most powerful man in Lebanese politics, but they also, by way of a whitewashed investigation, pinned the blame for his murder on Syria and successfully forced the removal of the Syrian military presence in Lebanon, the final obstacle to dissuading Israel from re-invading Lebanon. The name has changed, but the goal of the current Israeli Prime Minister remains the same. All of it, it seems, has been set up very nicely indeed.
Of course, Israel would not be in a position to dominate any conflict with its Arab neighbors if it were not for the generous support of American taxpayers. We are yet again unsurprised to learn therefore that while Israel was busy planning the current attack on Lebanon and its justification, the Bush administration was right there beside them:

Wesley Clark, the retired four-star general who is one of 10
candidates for the Democratic nomination for president, has written
a new book that is just arriving on bookstore shelves. Called
Winning Modern Wars, it's mostly about the Iraq war and
terrorism—and it is laced with powerful new information that he held
back from the public when he was a CNN military commentator during
the Bush administration's preparations for the war.
For example, he says he learned from military sources at the
Pentagon in November 2001, just two months after the September 11
terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, that serious planning
for the war on Iraq had already begun and that, in addition to Iraq,
the administration had drawn up a list of six other nations to be
targeted over a period of five years.
Here's what he writes on page 130:
"As I went back through the Pentagon in November 2001, one of the
senior military staff officers had time for a chat. Yes, we were
still on track for going against Iraq, he said. But there was more.
This was being discussed as part of a five-year campaign plan, he
said, and there were a total of seven countries, beginning with
Iraq, then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Iran, Somalia, and Sudan." Clark
adds, "I left the Pentagon that afternoon deeply concerned."
So there you have it, and you thought it was all about Osama bin Laden attacking the US on September 11th. How /could/ you have been so wrong?!
Certain "Middle Eastern analysts" (who couldn't analyse their way out of a chair) have stated that Hizb'allah provoked the current conflict with Israel in order to "reduce the pressure on Palestinians and force Israel to fight on two fronts", but such 'analysis' either completely misses (or conveniently ignores) the above facts - that Israel has long sought an opening to 'deal with' its Arab problem. Further inane 'analysis' is provided by Noam Chomsky, an alleged expert on the Middle East, where he criticises Hizb'allah for the "irresponsible" act of capturing the two Israeli soldiers, which, he claims, has exposed the Lebanese people to the dire threat from Israeli bombs and guns. Chomsky seems to forget that Israel needed no encouragement to butcher 20,000 Lebanese and Palestinians in their last full-scale invasion of Lebanon in 1982. Chomsky, for all his credentials, seems oblivious to the long-standing violent intentions of successive Israeli governments towards almost all of its Arab neighbors, neighbors who have the audacity to attempt to remind Israel and the world that Israel is occupying stolen Arab land!
Not only have the Lebanese people witnessed Israel's malevolent intentions first hand many times in the past, but Hizb'allah has surely been watching carefully over the past few years as Israel set the scene for yet another Lebanese bloodbath. Yet when Hizb'allah captures two Israeli soldiers that invaded their territory 2 weeks ago, Chomsky blames Hizb'allah for putting the Lebanese people in danger! Talk about having your head in the sand!
Thankfully, there are those of us who have long-since dispensed with any semblance of wishful thinking about the intentions of the state of Israel and the psychopaths that run the Zionist show, and as such, are in a position to definitively answer the following questions:
Is Israel lying about the source of the present conflict? Undoubtedly.
Are Israeli lies being promoted by American media outlets?
No question.
Has Israel manipulated the current crisis and wantonly murdered 350 Lebanese civilians? The answer is clear.
Does the Bush government wholeheartedly endorse and support Israeli manipulations? It's a 'no-brainer'
But what of the bigger question? What of the "why" of the actions of these few wild-eyed nut-jobs-in-suits in power? Why is Israel doing this? Why is the American government supporting them? What of the future? Where is all of it leading?
Well, according to Condi Rice it is nothing less than the "birth of a new Middle East", which of course sounds like a wonderfully noble ideal.
And therein lies the hook.
Every war ever waged by a major state player (which is pretty much all of them), has been presented to the public in terms of an ideal, like 'freedom' for example, when in reality, the main motivating factor boils down to personal profit or gain. That psychopathic warmongers would engage in such mass manipulation is elementary - they know that ordinary, decent people /would never knowingly support a war in which they, their children, or other innocent human beings are certain to die, purely to serve the personal ambitions of an elite few/. Ordinary, decent people will, however, /always rally to the cause of 'freedom' and allow that ideal to steel them against the massive suffering and death that war entails as they make the 'ultimate sacrifice' 'for freedom's sake'/.
I trust you can see just how intrinsically evil such a manipulation is. But more important than seeing the manipulation, is recognizing its authors, and realizing that their cold-blooded, calculated manipulations, leading to the deaths of millions of innocent people - people like you and I, our sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, fathers and mothers - /is something you and I could never do/.
Yet they can - and do, over and over and over again.
Not only can they do it, but they are aware enough to know that they must ensure, at all costs, /that you and I never understand *why* they do it or *how they can do it.*/ We must never fathom the mechanism that allows them to commit acts of extreme barbarity while simultaneously presenting themselves to the world as the progenitors of honorable human values. We must never be allowed to know their true nature or the sick game they play. For the day that you and I possess such knowledge and /realize who the real enemy is/, is the day that we no longer serve the interests of the pathocracy - the psychopaths in power - through our naivety and gullibility. On that day, their spell will be broken. No longer will thousands march to war under their banner of fake "freedom", no longer will millions shrink in fear of illusory "terrorism" and permit atrocities to be committed in their name. On that day, our planet shall be retaken for the sane, rational and decent human beings, and the fifth column that has dwelt for so long in our midst shall be confined to the asylum where they belong.
Let's make it happen. Wake Up, and spread the word. These people are not like you and I. They have no conscience, they have no ability to feel empathy for the suffering of another. They are psychopaths, and they are our leaders.
American thespian Fritz Williams wrote:
"Suffering and joy teach us, if we allow them, how to make the leap
of empathy, which transports us into the soul and heart of another
person. In those transparent moments we know other people's joys and
sorrows, and we care about their concerns as if they were our own."
In recent weeks, as we pondered the pictures showing the horror wrought by Israel in Lebanon, all decent human beings instinctively made the leap of empathy spoken of by Williams. Some, however, did not. /They could not/. And it just so happens that they are same people responsible for bringing the horror of mass murder into our lives.

Four UN observers killed in Israeli attack in Lebanon

An Israeli air strike killed four United Nations military observers at their base in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, the United Nations said.

UK Labor Insider - US/Israel/UK To Go To War With Iran

We've all been worried about a looming war with Iran and Syria for quite some time now. Here in Santa Fe, New Mexico, young men and women protest every week on the Plaza downtown under the banners, "Stop the Next War Now" and "No War Against Iran." Try as I may, I just can't figure out how to comment on the tragic, but definitively diabolical Israeli invasion of Lebanon, supported as it is by rush shipments of "precision guided munitions" and "experimental weaponry" from the Bush Administration. I should say however, that it is clearly designed as part of the desired larger regional war involving Syria and Iran. Perhaps it's best to let Israel Shahak, former professor at Hebrew University in Jerusalem comment for me:
"The wish for peace, so often assumed as the Israeli aim, is not in my view a principle of Israeli policy, while the wish to extend Israeli domination and influence isâ· Israel is preparing for a war, nuclear if need be, for the sake of averting domestic change not to its liking, if it occurs in some or any Middle Eastern states... Israel clearly prepares itself to seek overtly a hegemony over the entire Middle East..., without hesitating to use for the purpose all means available, including nuclear ones."
Fortunately and to their credit, some Israeli citizens are protesting, calling on soldiers to refuse to serve. One of my colleagues who has friends in Israel always reminds me that there are many peace activists in Israel. Here's the latest from Tel Aviv:
"Thousands march in Tel Aviv to protest Lebanon fighting, call on soldiers to refuse taking part in war. Clashes with passersby erupt during event, activists called 'traitors'.
Thousands of left-wing activists, including many Arab citizens, marched Saturday evening from the Rabin Square to the Cinematheque plaza in Tel Aviv in protest of the fighting in Lebanon. The protestors held up signs with slogans against the war and called for an immediate ceasefire. According to the demonstrators, a prisoner exchange deal with Hizbullah must be struck, as well as a similar deal with Hamas. Marchers also urged IDF soldiers not to take part in the Lebanon operation, chanting: "Listen up, soldier â·" it's your duty to refuse." Other slogans recited by the participants were: "The occupation is a disaster, leave Lebanon now," "Olmert and Bush have struck a deal â·" to carry on with the occupation," and "Children in Beirut and Haifa want to go on living."
As Mr. Ahmed notes below, Daniel Ellsberg, the famous attorney who revealed the existence of the Pentagon Papers figures prominently in the news these days. Appearing on the Genesis Communications Network, Mr. Ellsberg had this to say:
"[In the event of]... another 9/11 or a major war in the Middle-East involving a U.S. attack on Iran, I have no doubt that there will be, the day after or within days an equivalent of a Reichstag fire decree that will involve massive detentions in this country, detention camps for middle-easterners and their quote 'sympathizers', critics of the President's policy and essentially the wiping-out of the Bill of Rights."
Wayne Madsen, formerly of the National Security Agency, describes the planning for the invasion of Lebanon as related to him by insider sources:

"The Israeli invasion of Lebanon was planned between top Israeli officials and members of the Bush administration. On June 17 and 18, former Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Likud Knesset member Natan Sharansky met with Vice President Dick Cheney at the American Enterprise Institute conference in Beaver Creek, Colorado. There, the impending Israeli invasions of both Gaza and Lebanon were discussed. After receiving Cheney's full backing for the invasion of Gaza and Lebanon, Netanyahu flew back to Israel and participated in a special "Ex-Prime Ministers" meeting, in which he conveyed the Bush administration's support for the carrying out of the "Clean Break" policy -- the trashing of all past Middle East peace accords, including Oslo. Present at the meeting, in addition to Netanyahu, were current Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and former Prime Ministers Ehud Barak and Shimon Peres. Former Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir is very old and suffers from dementia and Ariel Sharon remains in a coma after a series of strokes.
After the AEI meeting, Sharansky, who has the ear of Bush, met with the Heritage Foundation in Washington and then attended a June 29 seminar at Philadelphia's Main Line Haverford School sponsored by the Middle East Forum led by Daniel Pipes. Sharansky appeared with Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum who this past Thursday was beating the war drums against Syria, Iran, and "Islamo-fascism" in a fiery speech at the National Press Club attended by a cheering section composed of members of the neocon Israel Project, on whose board Santorum serves along with Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss and Virginia GOP Rep. Tom Davis.
Our Washington sources claim that the U.S.-supported invasions of Gaza and Lebanon and the impending attacks on Syria and Iran represent the suspected "event" predicted to take place prior to the November election in the United States and is an attempt to rally the American public around the Bush-Cheney regime during a time of wider war."
What will it take to stop war with Iran? I can't say for sure, but it starts with believing it is possible. Perhaps it's time for everyone to activate their social networks in the military, politics and media. Think back over your life to everyone you know who was ever in the military or at all influential, and see if you can't convince them to oppose war with Iran, support withdrawal from Iraq and take another look at the events of 9/11. Recent polls indicate that some 70% of the military want out of Iraq. As Army Medic Patrick Resta said so beautifully in the Santa Fe Reporter, "When I was in Iraq, I did not want somebody simply sending me stale brownies. I wanted them to demand answers and hold the leadership of this nation accountable."

UK Govt Sources Confirm War With Iran Is On

In the last few days, I learned from a credible and informed source that a former senior Labour government Minister, who continues to be well-connected to British military and security officials, confirms that Britain and the United States "... will go to war with Iran before the end of the year."
As we now know from similar reporting prior to the invasion of Iraq, it's quite possible that the war planning may indeed change repeatedly, and the war may again be postponed. In any case, it's worth noting that the information from a former Labour Minister corroborates expert analyses suggesting that Israel, with US and British support, is deliberately escalating the cycle of retaliation to legitimize the imminent targeting of Iran before year's end. Let us remind ourselves, for instance, of US Vice President Cheney's assertions recorded on MSNBC over a year ago. He described Iran as being "right at the top of the list" of "rogue states". He continued: "One of the concerns people have is that Israel might do it without being asked... Given the fact that Iran has a stated policy that their objective is the destruction of Israel, the Israelis might well decide to act first, and let the rest of the world worry about cleaning up the diplomatic mess afterwards."
But the emphasis on Israel's pre-eminent role in a prospective assault on Iran is not accurate. [Not so sure about that - Ed.] Israel would rather play the role of a regional proxy force in a US-led campaign. "Despite the deteriorating security situation in Iraq, the Bush Administration has not reconsidered its basic long-range policy goal in the Middle East..." reports Seymour Hersh. He quotes a former high-level US intelligence official as follows:
"This is a war against terrorism, and Iraq is just one campaign. The Bush Administration is looking at this as a huge war zone. Next, we're going to have the Iranian campaign. We've declared war and the bad guys, wherever they are, are the enemy. This is the last hurrahâ·we've got four years, and want to come out of this saying we won the war on terrorism."
Are these just the fanatical pipedreams of the neoconservative faction currently occupying (literally) the White House?
Unfortunately, no. The Iraq War was one such fanatical pipedream in the late 1990s, one that Bush administration officials were eagerly ruminating over when they were actively and directly involved in the Project for a New American Century. But that particular pipedream is now a terrible, gruelling reality for the Iraqi people. Despite the glaring failures of US efforts in that country, there appears to be a serious inability to recognize the futility of attempting the same in Iran.
The Monterey Institute for International Studies already showed nearly two years ago in a detailed analysis that the likely consequences of a strike on Iran by the US, Israel, or both, would be a regional conflagaration that could quickly turn nuclear, and spiral out of control. US and Israeli planners are no doubt aware of what could happen. Such a catastrophe would have irreversible ramifications for the global political economy. Energy security would be in tatters, precipitating the activation of long-standing contingency plans to invade and occupy all the major resource-rich areas of the Middle East and elsewhere (see my book published by Clairview, Behind the War on Terror for references and discussion). Such action could itself trigger responses from other major powers with fundamental interests in maintaining their own access to regional energy supplies, such as Russia and particularly China, which has huge interests in Iran. Simultaneously, the dollar-economy would be seriously undermined, most likely facing imminent collapse in the context of such crises.
Which raises pertinent questions about why Britain, the US and Israel are contemplating such a scenario as a viable way of securing their interests.
A glimpse of an answer lies in the fact that the post-9/11 military geostrategy of the "War on Terror" does not spring from a position of power, but rather from entirely the opposite. The global system has been crumbling under the weight of its own unsustainability for many years now, and we are fast approaching the convergence of multiple crises that are already interacting fatally as I write. The peak of world oil production, of which the Bush administration is well aware, either has already just happened, or is very close to happening. It is a pivotal event that signals the end of the Oil Age, for all intents and purposes, with escalating demand placing increasing pressure on dwindling supplies. Half the world's oil reserves are, more or less, depleted, which means that it will be technologically, geophysically, increasingly difficult to extract conventional oil. I had a chat last week with some scientists from the Omega Institute in Brighton, directed by my colleague and friend Graham Ennis (scroll down about 2/3's to see Graham's letter published in The Independent), who told me eloquently and powerfully what I already knew, that while a number of climate "tipping-points" may or may not have yet been passed, we have about 10-15 years before the "tipping-point" is breached certainly and irreversibly. Breaching that point means plunging head-first into full-scale "climate catastrophe". Amidst this looming Armageddon of Nature, the dollar-denominated economy itself has been teetering on the edge of spiralling collapse for the last seven years or more. This is not idle speculation. A financial analyst as senior as Paul Volcker, Alan Greenspan's immediate predecessor as chairman of the Federal Reserve, recently confessed "that he thought there was a 75% chance of a currency crisis in the United States within five years."
There appears to have been a cold calculation made at senior levels within the Anglo-American policymaking establishment: that the system is dying, but the last remaining viable means of sustaining it remains a fundamentally military solution designed to reconfigure and rehabilitate the system to continue to meet the requirements of the interlocking circuits of military-corporate power and profit.
The highly respected US whistleblower, former RAND strategic analyst Daniel Ellsberg, who was Special Assistant to Assistant Secretary of Defense during the Vietnam conflict and became famous after leaking the Pentagon Papers, has already warned of his fears that in the event of:

So is that what all the "emergency preparedness" legislation, here in the UK as well as in the USA and in Europea, is all about? The US plans are bad enough, as Ellsberg notes, but the plans UK scene is hardly better, prompting The Guardian to describe the Civil Contingencies Bill (passed as an Act in 2004) as "the greatest threat to civil liberty that any parliament is ever likely to consider."
As global crises converge over the next few years, we the people are faced with an unprecedented opportunity to use the growing awareness of the inherent inhumanity and comprehensive destructiveness of the global imperial system to establish new, viable, sustainable and humane ways of living. Unfortunately, we have no other option. There is still light, however dim it may seem in this overwhelming smog of escalating calamity...
