Random Thoughts on Israel's Merciless Attack on Lebanon

I wonder about the real purpose of Israel's merciless, murderous campaign against Lebanon. I made a tasteless joke at work last week, when this carnage started, that "at least there will be something interesting on TV this weekend". When I arrived home, the evening news said little about what was really going on. It still hasn't even brushed the surface of the sordid story.

Here is the mainstream media's version of the situation: "Hezbollah is doing bad things on orders from Syria or Iran. Therefore, Israel must destroy the entire infrastructure of Lebanon (and plenty of its innocent children, women, men, and animals) without cease." If you pay a little closer attention to the pundits, which is very hard to do, you get: "Syria and Iran must stop Lebanon from doing bad things, or they are next."

True several Israelis have been killed by Hezbollah rockets. But there is nothing at all about the Lebanese suffering.

The mainstream media hailed a "ceasefire proposal" from the US (and other nations cowardly enough to sign onto it) that was the equivalent of "Hey, Lebanon. Stop hitting yourself!"

There is nothing about how ridiculous it is for the Lebanese to call off the Israeli blitzkrieg or Hezbollah.

Hezbollah rockets usually miss their targets by a wide margin, but they have killed several people in recent days. Israel is using extremely advanced and deadly weaponry to systematically destroy the civilian infrastructure of Lebanon: power stations, bridges, railways, roads, the airport, civilian neighborhoods. Entire areas of the country are in utter blackout. With all the bridges out, how can people and things be moved? How long before food starts to run out? How long before the backup of raw sewage creates a major disease outbreak? How long before their meager savings run out because all commerce has ceased? Even after the bombing stops, assuming it may, how are people going to rebuild their nation? What if the bombing doesn't stop and we end up in the war most of us have been predicting for three years?

From what I have been able to glean from what I believe are more truthful and complete sources, Israel is brutally punishing all of the people of Lebanon for not being able or willing to stop the actions of Hezbollah, an elected political party that may or may not also be a "terrorist organization". This is the very definition of the highest order of war crime, violating the first of the Nuremberg Tribunal's holdings and rendering moot every rational concept of the "just" war.

I wonder if Israel's relentless bombing is meant to provoke the outrage of another Arab nation or some "terrorists" (or terrorists) to strike at Israel in Lebanon's defense, opening up a regional or global war, which will be devastating beyond comprehension. If so, why? Why would anyone want to unleash that kind of suffering? How could the people of any nation allow that to happen in their names? Or, in America's case, how could its people not even utter a whimper in protest?

I think the neocons have tired of those pesky international boundaries the Americans and the English drew after World War II and have now decided to erase them. They believe that the American public has been: a) sufficiently stoked with anti-Muslim rage that they agree it's go time, or b) sufficiently narcotized by drugs, alcohol, sex and/or television that they don't know or care what is happening.

I am watching all of this in horror.

The truth is important.

The truth is shocking and awful.

i have intentionally been viewing some of the mainstream tv newcasts and especially on CNN, to my amazement, they have not been simply promoting Israel.
in fact, i have seen different reporters engaged in "short interviews" with varying officials from Israel asking very pointed questions and pulling the interviewee back to the question when they stray.

i'm not saying they are perfect but i am finding it very refreshing too see at least some intelligent reporting for a change

Tune Out The MSM 18.Jul.2006 06:37

Minerva's Owl

Please stop deluding yourselves about getting "objective" reporting about Israel's aggression in Gaza and Lebanon from the American mainstream media, and this includes such "progressive" organizations as The Nation and Air America Radio. If the news medium is for-profit, you're going to get the party line, no matter how "balanced" it may seem to you.

You have heard countless words in the American MSM about Cpl. Shalit, the IDF soldier who was taken prisoner on June 25, by a unit of Hamas fighters. But, have you heard one word about Hamas members Mustafa and Osama Muammar, two brothers who were kidnapped from Gaza by the IDF on June 25? No? Not surprised.

You have heard from the American MSM how the Hezbollah unit attacked the Israeli patrol on Israeli soil. But, other non-American media have stated that the Israeli patrol was actually in Lebanon when it was attacked by Hezbollah. have you heard any discussion in the American MSM about this disputed fact? No? Not surprised.

You have heard numerous interviews in the American MSM with Israeli spokespersons and their supporters. How many interviews in the American MSM have you heard with Hezbollah spokespersons and their supporters? None? Not surprised.

In a nutshell, the rule of thumb to follow with respect to the American MSM's coverage of the Palestinian/Lebanese/Israeli conflict is that it is biased towards Israel no matter how loud some Israeli supporters scream that some "liberal" MSM organizations' coverage of the conflict is "anti-Israel." It is all theater to confuse a population that doesn't take too much effort to confuse.

All according to plan 19.Jul.2006 14:48

History Buff

This is all part of the US-Israel plan. The US has pre-approved of everything Israel is doing right now. Keep in mind just 2 months back:

Olmert, Bush agree on Iran deadline

What's really going on here? Consider the following:

IF Israel and the U.S. were about to attack Iran or Syria, would Israel keep all its military hardware in Israel (inside the Green Line), where it would be an easier target for counterattack, or would it find excuses to move its weapons into the occupied territories and Lebanon, where Palestinians and Muslims would be de facto human shields?

IF Israel and the U.S. were about to attack Iran or Syria, wouldn't the most strategic location for Israel's ground forces be in the occupied territories, adjacent to many Muslim countries that might be tempted to come to Iran's aid (Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia)?
