I Like My Fast Food Raw

Raw food is really a "fast food." As commercial food integrity plummets, I find myself more and more drawn to home cooking merely to control the ingredients I ingest...And I also really like the idea of improving on the drive through fast food car window by making it a *BIKE THROUGH* DRIVE UP WINDOW, for fast *health* food. I am still surprised that fast health food window service for cars and bikes is not more available at this late stage, to be honest.

Raw food is really a "fast food." As commercial food integrity plummets, I find myself more and more drawn to home cooking merely to control the ingredients I ingest. Much as I prefer to make my own cosmetics to avoid all the additives, preservatives, and other chemicals in my lotions, baths, hair products, etc., I also like to avoid those things in my food. I realized the other day that a bulk of what is in my refrigerator is vegetables and fruits. And that is because I use raw food like fast food often.

I have a huge bag of locally grown organic carrots in my fridge, and I eat them when I am on the go, or in a hurry, without time to prepare or eat anything. Carrots really are the ultimate fast food in ways. They are not messy at all and they are ridiculously beneficial to your health, with loads of Vitamin A and fiber...and their only preparation is a quick rinse. They are easy to grow too! Carrots rule!

Oranges are another obvious convenient fast food. They come with their own packaging, and like carrots, they are packed with fiber and vitamins. Apples work as fast food too, you just need to be a bit more careful with them in transit. Apples are easy to store, and grab as you run off somewhere, having forgotten to eat first. Organic apples allow you to eat the skins for extra vitamins as well.

Right now cherries are all over the streets of Seattle. Cherries and local strawberries. Both are ready to eat. And sweet. Cherries are an excellent fast food. They are like nature's candy, in bite-sized pieces. Washington's local strawberries cannot endure travel, but our cherries can be hauled around in a bag and eaten on the go! Which reminds me of cherry tomatoes which are also sweet, bite-sized natural treats, you just need to pack them in a hard container to protect them; but they can be grabbed and eaten on the run too.

Nuts are a fast food. Open their containers and they are ready to eat! They are full of fiber, protein, and other good things. And they go well with fruit. Dried fruits are another source of handy fast food. Raisins, for instance, mixed with nuts, is the beginning of a handful of nutritious fast food for a kid. Kids need healthy foods they can run off with. Dried pineapple rings, dried whole bananas, dried mango and papaya, as well as dried berries and apples, make sweet fast foods (but be careful as they are hard on teeth with all their sugars).

I used to be in the Source Family, of the Source Restaurant on Sunset Blvd. fame, and we ate a lot of raw foods. The Source Restaurant actually began as a raw foods restaurant. Growing up in the suburbs of L.A., I ate fast food hamburgers and tacos for dinner and greasy donuts for breakfast, as well as TV dinners and hot dogs, etc., never conscious of the "pig snouts and linoleum" as Zippy would say, in these types of foods...I was raised with a complete disassociation with food's origins. I did not know much about how it was made, what was in it, where it came from, and I had zero health knowledge. It was not until meeting the Source Family, that I came to understand the direct correlation between health and the food you put into your body, as well as the environmental benefits of eating local, organic produce in season. The Source taught me how to eat raw foods, basically. We ate raw food diets in the Source on and off regularly. I still eat a raw food diet if I get really sick and cannot beat it. That usually takes care of it.

Another way to have raw food as fast food is to make juice. Just juice raw fruits, or you can make juice combos too, such as apples with lemons and strawberries. You can also juice many a vegetable, or make combos such as carrots juiced with parsley, cucumber, spinach, green onions, green peppers, and/or even beets. Put the juice in containers and you have a bunch of vitamins and minerals to go without any of the extra ingredients in most juices on store shelves.

I make fruit salads as breakfast often. I merely slice a banana, slice an apple, add a few raisins, and a few sliced nuts, maybe some sliced berried or grapes or papaya, and then I squeeze an orange's juice over the whole thing, and then cut the other half of the orange into small pieces and I add that to the fruit salad too. Sometimes I toss yogurt on top also. It is pretty easy and fast to make this salad, it is *almost* fast food.

An odd but good Source family raw food classic salad is the Rainbow Salad. You combine a veggie from each color group in this salad. Red = cut up tomatoes, Purple = cut up red onion, Blue = raw skinned eggplant cut into cubes, Orange = hazelnuts, Yellow = banana slices, White = alfalfa sprouts...mix all these ingredients in a bowl. Then mash up the Green = avocado, and you can add some minced raw garlic to the avocado if you want. I also add brewer's yeast and tamari to the avocado...then you spread it on the salad like dressing. This salad is wildly delicious and nutritious.

Another favorite food of mine is raw veggie sandwiches. I start with wholesome bread, and usually add some type of cheese or even raw tofu. Then I load on layers of sliced green onion, grated carrots, sliced raw beets, and parsley. If I am feeling extravagant I will also add some of these veggies too: spinach, minced raw garlic, cucumbers, avocado, tomato, sprouts, mushrooms, celery...Then I sprinkle brewer's yeast and tamari on top and wrap something around the bottom half of it, shove it in a bag, and then eat it on the go.

When I was in Santa Cruz, Ca. many decades ago, there was a health food fast food joint called "McDharma's" ( http://dharmaland.com/history/about_us.html). You could drive through or walk up back then, I believe...just like McDonald's, but they only served vegetarian health food. McDonald's sued "McDharma's" and they had to change their name to "Not McDharma's." But I really like the idea of improving on the drive through car window by making it a *BIKE THROUGH* DRIVE UP WINDOW, for fast health food. I am still surprised that fast health food window service for cars is not more available at this late stage, to be honest.

There is no reason that fast food has to be nutritionally bankrupt, nor pumped full of "mystery" ingredients. . Raw foods, as I have said, can make good food for all in the family. At least make healthy food alternatives available for your kids. My kid would often choose a slice of watermelon or a sliced orange over some packaged food, when offered. And now as an adult, he still craves brewer's yeast on his popcorn and looks for amazake, not kool-aid. I was pleased to see the kids at my son's high school in Eugene were choosing to go across the street to the health food store to eat lunch, instead of to the Dairy Queen. My generation was raised on nutritionally bare fast foods; pot pies and greasy scraps of the food industry thrown at us, sold as a woman's liberation from being chained to the kitchen. But that dependency on industrial foods has been shown to have some serious flaws. It is much more conscious and beneficial to consume organic, local produce, in season. It makes more sense to eat whole, raw food, than food that is so over-processed that chemical vitamins need to be added back to make them have any merit at all. We can use nature's veggies and fruits as fast foods if we really think about it. It takes just a little more preparation and the health benefits are immeasurable. Start eating more raw foods on the go! As I said, I prefer my fast foods *raw*!

I liked this effort to improve drive-thru service to cyclists 03.Jul.2006 02:28


I liked that this Pedalpalooza (17-day Portland-area bike events festival) event was a campaign for drive-thru lane service for cyclists. I wouldn't have the slightest inclination to eat at most of the establishments probably visited, but still think it stinks that service would be limited to motor vehicles.


N Portland Blvd MAX Stn (North Bound Platform)
A ride and food cruise to highlight the transportation inequity of national fast food restuarants not serving bicyclists (pedestrians too) in drive thru lanes at night. Does one have to rent a car to get a $1 burger? Think of this as a lunch counter sit-in for bicyclists. If these lanes are truely 'not safe' for bicyclists (as Ronald and Jack sez) then how come local jurisdictions allow them to be designed so? Restaurant suggestions accepted - for those that serve and do not serve bicyclists.

i meant to fix that but forgot before I posted it...yeah, I meant to say the cheese/tofu sandwich is not totally raw foods, but it is close and a good way to get a bunch of raw veggies...sorry about that!

living foods

Raw foods are those that haven't been heated enough to kill the natural enzymes in the food, for most foods this is 113 - 115 degrees. I'm no expert, but it would seem that most cheeses that don't involve Pastuerization would be "raw" due to never having exceeded the minimum cooking temperature. This would go for "cheese" made from starting materials other than mammals' milk, such as nut / soy cheeses.
