VIEW "THE CENTURY PLAZA" & LAUNCH GRASSROOTS SCREENING

Documentary about area homeless screens in Portland on June 22 (as well as Showtime starting June 22), launching revolutionary new activism and film distribution initiative.
As a revolutionary new distribution initiative, Grassroots Screening believes that filmmaking as an art along with the experience of watching a film has the potential to inspire people and motivate in a way that no other medium can. Grassroots Screening is working to create a model where like-minded people share this experience together; establish a forum and provide resources for people to collectively cultivate the seed of this motivation and inspiration; and bring about real change. GrassrootsScreening.org is where we're working to change the way movies are seen and used to make the world a better place.

Grassroots Screening strives to support independent filmmakers creating socially-conscious work while encouraging creative freedom over commercial concerns. It will begin with "The Century Plaza", the first film to have exclusive DVD distribution via Grassroots Screening. A compelling documentary feature about homelessness focusing on a single-room occupancy hotel in downtown Portland, "The Century Plaza" world premiered in competition at the 2005 Los Angeles Film Festival. It screens at 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm on Thursday, June 22, at Portland's Clinton Street Theater (www.clintonsttheater.com), with director Eric Lahey in attendance for post-screening question-and-answer sessions.

"The Century Plaza" will make its broadcast debut on Showtime this Thursday, June 22, with airings continuing through the month. More dates for cable and theatrical screenings can be found at www.GrassrootsScreening.org. There is a cross-country tour of "Century Plaza" screenings planned for Fall 2006, spanning both academic institutions and community presentations.

Grassroots Screening wants to partner with activist and community organizations in order to expand audience participation with the distributed films; group reps can email  Orgs@GrassrootsScreening.org. Filmmakers interested in an innovative self-distribution model that contributes to global change while maintaining artistic control can email  Films@GrassrootsScreening.org. And everyone is encouraged to visit GrassrootsScreening.org to sign up for the mailing list, stay in the loop, and spread the word about how Grassroots Screening is changing the way movies are seen.
