NBC's Scary Partner: Perverted Justice

A closer look at the group "Perverted Justice"
In their Dateline series, "To Catch a Predator," NBC teamed up with an online organization called Perverted Justice, paying them over $100000. Many people have raised questions about the ethical and legal implications of such a partnership. However, a closer look at the Perverted Justice group itself may be even more disturbing.

According to their site ( http://www.perverted-justice.com), "Concerned citizens from all walks of life who saw this problem got together and formed civilian watchdog group 'Perverted Justice', a website dedicated to finding and exposing those users in regional chatrooms with predatory tendencies towards children."

Sounds great, right? But they don't always stop there. Sometimes they also post information about the accused's innocent family members, claiming that they're trying to raise awareness. For example, one Perverted Justice member using the screen name "Doodler" posted this about the family of a man recently convicted of soliciting a minor online.

"Soooo, the past few weeks his daughter has been 'sharing' in class (I'm friends with her teacher and my daughter is in the same class so I hear EVERYTHING-ha, we've been keeping our ears open). His daughter was talking about family in town, a big yard sale last weekend, and her dance recital that was coming up. She listed all the people that would be at her dance recital and didn't even mention her dad. Another student asked why her Dad wouldn't be there and she said, 'I'm not allowed to talk about it.' Hmmmmmm, she knows something but I'm not sure how much she knows. OK, so then I ran into his wife today at a birthday party. We talked for about 20 minutes. She was talking about her hubby like he was at home mowing the lawn... I asked if they had travel plans this summer and she said they were 'just hanging out at home, just the usual trips to Dallas.' She doesn't know that I know about her perverted husband, but we do and we are spreading the word. I think people should know about this man since he does have a daughter and she has friends. I don't want him to ever be able to touch any of them!!!"

Group members also run a related site at  http://www.corrupted-justice.net dedicated to attacking people who criticize Perverted Justice. The posts on the Corrupted-justice.net site make "Doodler" seem almost classy. Members post personal information about critics, and occasionally make crude attempts at Google bombing by posting the person's name repeatedly, along with words like "pedophile."

Although I was unable to locate NBC's code of ethics, the Society of Professional Journalistcs (SPJ) has their code online at  http://www.spj.org/ethics_code.asp . Here are a few of the guidelines:

* Show compassion for those who may be affected adversely by news coverage. Use special sensitivity when dealing with children and inexperienced sources or subjects.
* Recognize that private people have a greater right to control information about themselves than do public officials and others who seek power, influence or attention. Only an overriding public need can justify intrusion into anyone's privacy.
* Show good taste. Avoid pandering to lurid curiosity.
* Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived.
* Remain free of associations and activities that may compromise integrity or damage credibility.
* Be wary of sources offering information for favors or money; avoid bidding for news.
* Encourage the public to voice grievances against the news media.
* Expose unethical practices of journalists and the news media.
A few ethical guidelines seem to elude the author. 09.Jun.2006 08:10

Citizen Kane

* Test the accuracy of information from all sources and exercise care to avoid inadvertent error. Deliberate distortion is never permissible.

Apprently, "Gary N" is using one source for his information - which explains the innacuracies. Did the author bother do investigate what he'd written?

www.Corrupted-Justice.net is NOT founded "dedicated to attacking people who criticize Perverted Justice." They are dedicated to refuting the lies spread by one group of pro-pedophiles and their supporters. Test the accuracy of your information, sir.

A few more ethical guidelines that "Gary N" has carefully avoided:

* Diligently seek out subjects of news stories to give them the opportunity to respond to allegations of wrongdoing.

* Identify sources whenever feasible. The public is entitled to as much information as possible on sources' reliability. (Note that "Gary N" will not even post his full name. Reliability? See Below:)

* Always question sources' motives before promising anonymity. Clarify conditions attached to any promise made in exchange for information. Keep promises. (What are your motives, "Gary N"? A spear piece without showing both sides? Very interesting.)

* Make certain that headlines, news teases and promotional material, photos, video, audio, graphics, sound bites and quotations do not misrepresent. They should not oversimplify or highlight incidents out of context.

* Never plagiarize. (Yes, I know where the information from this article originates.)

And most importantly:
* Distinguish between advocacy and news reporting. Analysis and commentary should be labeled and not misrepresent fact or context.

In short, "Gary N", keep your day job and leave the reporting to those qualified to do so in an ethical manner.

Gary N

"Apprently, 'Gary N' is using one source for his information - which explains the innacuracies. Did the author bother do investigate what he'd written?"

How interesting that the article itself points to three different sites. "One source?" I don't think so.

"Identify sources whenever feasible. The public is entitled to as much information as possible on sources' reliability. (Note that "Gary N" will not even post his full name. Reliability? See Below:)"

Since you're not using your real name either, I guess that makes us about even. Given CJ.net's propensity for harassment, I reluctantly decided to publish anonymously (which IndyMedia allows).

"Always question sources' motives before promising anonymity. Clarify conditions attached to any promise made in exchange for information. Keep promises."

What promises did I make to anyone when authoring this article?

"Make certain that headlines, news teases and promotional material, photos, video, audio, graphics, sound bites and quotations do not misrepresent. They should not oversimplify or highlight incidents out of context."

In my opinion, my choice of a headline represented my perspective quite well.

"Never plagiarize. (Yes, I know where the information from this article originates.)"

Yes, and the quotes were attributed to a poster on PJ who used the handle "Doodler" and chose not to use her real name. Of course, her quotes were also reposted on another board, and if I'd used comments from that board, I would have needed to cite the source.

"Distinguish between advocacy and news reporting. Analysis and commentary should be labeled and not misrepresent fact or context."

If your reading comprehension were a little better, you might have noticed that this had been submitted as commentary. The giveaway is the word "commentary" in the middle of the page right above the article.

Vigilante Stalker

In reality, Corrupted-Justice.net was not started because of a concern of so-called lies. It was founded because the owner of CJ.net got bitch-slapped by the administration of CJ.com, and spun it into what he in his warped mind took as a threat. Taken directly from Corrupted-Justice.net:

CJ.net was my idea after scootieboi attacked me and threatened me.

I was simply lucky that Xavier endorsed the idea - and once we had discussed the possibilities he jumped on board 100%.

His support then - and his continued support now is nice but was never really needed. Once the colon started to show thier true colors it would not have taken long for all of us to have made this site what it is.

You said:

What you quoted Phil as saying:

"His support then - and his continued support now is nice but was never really needed. Once the colon started to show thier true colors it would not have taken long for all of us to have made this site what it is."

Did you actually think and/or read that before you hit "post"?

I have seen both sides and I stand by CJ.net and PJ.com 100%.

Now shoo, Vigilante Stalker and go make doo doo elsewhere. For every pile of lies you people continue to poop all over the net, there will be one of us out here helping to set the record straight.
