Action at the Port Of Olympia Today

In protest of the illegal war in Iraq and the militarization of the Olympia Port, community members came together to take a stand. The day started out with a group of around 30 holding signs on the corners of State and Plum/East Bay. After 12 noon, much of the group moved closer to the entrance of the port. A group of 10 formed a blockade to stop one of the convoys around 1:30. Eight people were arrested after stopping the convoy for about 30 minutes.

A second group set up another blockade in front of the port entrance to block a convoy of strikers that had taken another route. Police brutally grabbed protesters trying to break them up. After a struggle the protesters were moved to the side and the convoy was let through.

Police said that the rest of the convoys for today were cancelled, but there is no way to be certain of this. Attempts to talk with soldiers about the war largely failed as the soldiers mostly refused to speak with the protesters.

PD lies 24.May.2006 23:17

It turns out that the Olympia police department's announcement that the shipments had been stopped was a lie. According to eyewitness accounts, shipments occurred later in the afternoon. We should compensate for this tomorrow.

Brave citizens striving to Stop the Axles of Evil! 25.May.2006 02:36

Bravo to the Northwest citizens who courageously confronted the Empire's "Axles of Evil" today at Olympia Port. We activists in Hawaii have also been organizing for the last 2 years to oppose the "Stryker" brigades, which are the new Imperialist interventionist formations designed to put down urban opposition to USA policies, mostly in Asia & other Third World nations in the coming decades.
After their disastrous Iraquagmire leading to a bankrupt domestic economy, the USA Empire builders(aka warmongers on steroids) have no other cards left--except for the "first strike" military Iron Fist; hence they are desperate to build up even more firepower & state-sponsored terrorism to put down popular movements against the Empire dreamers.

Keep up the valiant struggle!

I add my thanks, too. I missed advance news of this. Would've been there with you. Sorry i failed to keep up with you.

Ongoing? 25.May.2006 10:13

I'm getting impression that the convoys are every day for a while. If that is true, when should a person from outside Oly show up to support you?

My contacts in Olympia (such as they are) seem to believe the convoys are over (or nearly so) as of now. They were expecting roughly as many as there have been.

There are going to be ongoing protests, but given that any future shipping activity is going to involve loading the Strykers onto a ship in a heavily-guarded port facility, it would appear that the best window for direct action has passed.

Myself, I wasn't aware of anything happening at the Port of Olympia until I heard about yesterday's arrests on today's morning news. It all underscores a real need for better communication between the activist communities in the different cities of Cascadia, something which I'm going to attempt to make some effort (however small it may be) at addressing.

the olympian is reporting that the conveys are going to continue into next week. we're assuming the ship will not be coming into port until after all the equipment is in. we are maintaining a presnece at the port and will try to block whatever conveys come in, but they are coming pretty sporadically. a few strykers got through today without us knowing so we are now maintaining a 24 hour lookout. we will be meeting at the port at 7am friday morning and will be there all day. come out if you can.
