Steal This Festival Counter-Military Recruitment Benefit this Saturday 5/27

On May 27, 2006, there will be a festival at the Loveland International (320 SE 2nd Ave), from 2pm - 10pm. The proceeds will benefit Recruiter Watch PDX, a group that monitors and opposes U.S. military recruitment practices in Portland schools, and Portland Area Rethinking Schools, a local teachers' group.
Among confirmed speakers and bands are Mark Rudd, an activist who led the student occupation of Columbia University in 1968 and was a founding member of the Weather Underground Organization; These Arms Are Snakes, a screamo-hardcore band from Seattle, WA; and Parallax, a hardcore band from Provo, UT. Locals include Jay Boss Rubin, founder and organizer of the annual Portland Challenge event; Life & Limb; and Riot Cop.

Local political groups and businesses, such as: Food Fight!, Tacoma Students for a Democratic Society, Microcosm Publishing, Laughing Horse Books, Portland Books to Prisoners, Community Independence Project, PCSASC, ISO, The Open Media Center, the Bus Project, and Recruiter Watch PDX will be present with booths and tables;

The day will feature a showing of This Is What Democracy Looks Like, a documentary about the Seattle WTO protests shot by IndyMedia activists.

Door price will be $10 before 6pm and $12 after.

at the Peace Park. At 9am we'll be gathering up to do a bit of finish work on the already beautiful Portland Peace Memorial Park. It should be over with in time to get a little lunch and head on over to the event. We just got done planting 3300 flowers in our giant Peace Sign there this weekend! Come on down and check us out, pitch in if you want to but nevertheless come and see the colorful, exciting new East Side community gathering space at Oregon and Lloyd Sts. The Park is 2 blocks toward the river from the Rose Quarter MAX stop.
