Both of our Oregon Senators,Wyden and Smith, are members of the Senate Finance Committee and of the Subcommittee on International Trade and as such hold a lot of sway. There is hope for stopping OFTA by lobbying our Oregon delegation, but we must call and persuade our Senators and Congressmen to stop OFTA. Sen. Wyden has not yet spoken on OFTA, but he did sign a letter last week against the Peru Free Trade Agreement urging that International Labor Organization (ILO) standards be included in the Peru agreement. We need to call and ask him to be consistent.

Today in Washington, D.C.,the Senate Finance Committee held a hearing on the Oman Free Trade Agreement(OFTA). OFTA exploits Oman's workers especially the foreigners who comprise 75% of the private work force . They are guest-workers primarily from Pakistan, Bangladesh,India, Sri Lanka and the Phillipines. Oman is a destination country for human trafficking, a small country on a thousand mile strip of land in the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf where employers not uncommonly keep custody of the passports of their guest-workers. OFTA is a way to make Oman, an oil-rich country without energy- transport problems, an export platform for the entire Middle-East. OFTA is a piece of the Middle East Free Trade Agreement which the Administration has planned in order to make U.S. trade cheap and easy with the entire Middle East, with every sultan and emir. The Administration could care less about labor and environmental standards in the exporting countries.  http://www.citizenstrade.org/stopoman_05102006.php

Last week the vote mark-up process began in the House and today it began in the Senate.
Among Oregon's five Congressmen, all but Greg Walden have indicated a willingness to oppose OFTA. For today's hearing statements by Senators who support OFTA, click   http://finance.senate.gov/sitepages/hearing051806.htm

FYI, Just Look at Jordan and Free Trade
18.05.2006 - 16:41
Touted in the past as being a good example for a "free trade agreement" is one developed with Jordan a few years ago.

Look at this:   http://www.nlcnet.org/live/admin/media/document/jordan.pdf

It's an account of sweatshops in Jordan and a clear indication of how
things would if we sign this proposed trade deal with Oman - which is
worse, in many respects, than the Jordan trade agreement.

Pick up the phone and CALL YOUR SENATORS and REPRESENTATIVE!

NO MORE TRADE AGREEMENTS WITHOUT ENFORCABLE LABOR AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROVISIONS!!!
