You might be asking yourself "What does indigenous rights have to do with May Day?" That's reasonable. Here's what we think. Mayday from its very beginning has been about standing up to economic imperialism, against social injustice. It is a day to celebrate resistance. Early themes of mayday were focused on Land and Labor. The anarchists, communists, socialists, and Christian socialists that started the labor movement recognized that the land belonged to the people. They recognized that the labor of the people belongs to the people.
It's difficult to address economic imperialism and injustice without looking at the hard cold truth that we live on stolen land. Early on in the labor movement European people were pissed off because they were being kicked off land that their family had been farming as serfs for generations. Many of those people fled here. Many of the radical labor organizers that pioneered the ideas of unionism were immigrants. As industrial processes and equipment replaced work formerly done by serfs those serfs were kicked off the land, and they rose up. This is the cradle of our politics. Fighting economic imperialism against the people is the spirit behind our ideas. This was clear in the 1890's. As diverse groups join together once again in a common struggle to liberate people, and land it is clear that we need to address the imperialism that indigenous people have faced historically, and right now in this country.
