Who is Daniel McGowan?

Daniel McGowan is an environmental and social justice activist, unjustly arrested and charged in federal court on multiple counts of arson, property destruction, and conspiracy, relating to two incidents that occurred in Oregon in 2001. Daniel has asserted his innocence by pleading not guilty to all charges. He is facing a minimum of life in prison if convicted.

Daniel is from New York, and has been an active member of the community, working on diverse projects such as demonstrations against the Republican National Convention, Really Really Free Markets, and supporting political prisoners such as Jeff "Free" Luers and others. Daniel was a graduate student earning a Master's degree in acupuncture and was working at WomensLaw.org, a nonprofit group that helps women in domestic abuse situations navigate the legal system, which is where he was arrested by federal marshals on December 7, 2005.

Daniel had originally been indicted separately, but his arrest comes in the context of a well-coordinated, multi-state sweep of numerous activists by the federal government, who has charged the individuals with practically every earth and animal liberation case left unsolved in the Northwest. Many of the charges, including Daniel's, are for cases whose statute of limitations were about to expire.

In order to help Daniel, his family and friends have created a support network (Family and Friends of Daniel McGowan) to assist in raising funds for Daniel's legal representation which is expected to be hundreds of thousands of dollars. We are asking his friends and supporters to donate what they can to help Daniel's family with the legal bills.

"Terrorist Creep"--the 'Terrorization' of Criminal and Free Speech Acts

In response to the Green Scare of Operation Backfire, the Portland NLG, the
Northwest Constitutional Rights Center, and the First Unitarian Church present
a panel discussion about the impact of re-characterizing crimes as "domestic
terrorism" solely because of the political message allegedly associated with
the crimes. It is important not to let the government frame this issue and brand mere criminal acts (property crimes and sabotage) as acts of domestic terrorism.

Featuring:
Steven Wax, from the Oregon Federal Public Defender's Office
Stu Sugarman, NLG attorney and L&C grad defending alleged "terrorists"
Ashlee Albies, NLG attorney and 2005 L&C grad working with the Center for
Constitutional Rights to challenge the NSA's warrentless wiretapping.

A Q&A and audience discussion will conclude the event.

When: Wednesday, March 22, 7pm
Where: First Unitarian Church, 1011 SW 12th, Downtown Portland
What: a panel discussion, the first of a three part series: "But, is this really
"Terrorism?": A Forum on the Effect of the "War on Terror" on Domestic Political
Dissent
Who: YOU! (and the forum is co-sponsored by the Portland Chapter of the National
Lawyers Guild, the Northwest Constitutional Rights Center, and the First
Unitarian Church of Portland
How Much: a $5-$50 donation is suggested, but no one will be turned away for
lack of funds.

What more?:
April 5, "Crimes Against the Environment vs. Crimes For the Environment"
April 19, "The Chilling Effect on Dissent"

a concerned friend

i write this because i've not heard mention of a kind and loving friend in here for some time now. while daniel has been out on bail and under house arrest, let us not forget about a dear man named kevin tubbs, who has not been allowed out on bail. kevin tubbs has not been allowed to have decent meals, a comfortable bed, time with his beloved girlfriend and pets, or time to speak on the phone for more than a few minutes at a time, every couple of days, for an unduly high price. let us not forget that he needs our help as well, with letters of support, encouragement, and kind words. financial assistance would be of help, too, as his girlfriend is now the sole provider for their whole family. all the information you need can be found at www.supportkevintubbs.org

another concerned friend

While I understand your concern for your friend, you might want to exercise some sensitivity in how you chose to express it. Daniel McGowan was identified by Kevin Tubbs as a suspect. A Eugene detective who had come to New York to wiretap Daniel and later on arrest him said this on the stand. Trying to get support for Kevin by comparing his situation to Daniel rubs me the wrong way a bit. I'm not saying that there's something wrong with standing your friend, but if you want others to stand by him too you have to be sensitive to how you chose to express yourself.

Daniel McGowan is very lucky to have a great family and dedicated friends and wonderful partner. But it isn't luck alone, he is very loved by our community and the outpouring of support comes from all the good will he has built up by being consistently dedicated to helping others. We care about our friend as you care about yours, so please understand that we don't necessarily appreciate his situation being compared to someone who cooperated with the FBI against him. You risk doing more harm than good by taking that approach.

i was simply stating that kevin deserves our consideration and support as well. i'm sorry you took my statement as meaning daniel was less important or deserving. i meant nothing of the sort. peaceout~
