On November 5th various individuals who had volunteered their time and energy held a benefit to raise money to purchase new server hardware for portland indymedia. The event was extremely successful both in terms of raising money and also creating a space for people with various affiliations with portland indymedia work to come together to strengthen connections, build alliances, and have a fantastic amount of fun.
The event was held at freegeek which is a great venue for such events. Though there are a lot of other great venues in portland, and I like the idea of holding events in diverse locations, freegeek is really well suited to events of this type. Upon entry there were tables set up with t-shirts, dvd's, and items up for silent auction. Beyond that was a lounge area where people could get food, $2 beers (good beer at that), and sit and talk. Adjoining that space is a large space with a stage for the performers. Dual video projectors were setup to show various videos on the walls, a table with books for sale was off to the side, and there was seating in the back for those who wished to sit and watch the bands rather than standing or dancing near the stage.
Uncharacteristically for events in portland people actually began arriving near the advertised starting time. Though it was still a little while before the bands stated which gave people time to peruse the various tables, get food and drinks, and socialize with other people there.
The first band of the night was The Eclectic Bastards who performed an energetic rock and roll set that got people moving. Next a couple of rhythmically and lyrically powerful were showcased by Moorpheus from dRED-i. Minmae performed next with a solid set of indy pop stylings. Finally the live music concluded with Riot Cop who inspired a spirited response on the dance floor.
Everyone I've talked to said that they had a great time at the benefit. Many thanks to the organizers for pulling off such an amazing event and giving people a memorable experience. Thanks also to freegeek and their volunteers for the space, and the bands for donating their time and talents, and for rocking the place out. And finally thanks to all who came in support and joined in the fun, hopefully we'll all see each other again next time. I believe that t-shirts and dvd's will be sold at the upcoming video showing or arrangements can be made to purchase them at a general meeting if anyone is interested.
