Gay bashers Protest at Beaverton School

Announced today, protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church will be protesting at Skyridge High in Beaverton.
I came home today to two messages from the principals of the schools my kids attend, here is what they said:

Hello, this is Amy Gordon, principal of Southridge High School,
Dan Zenor, principal of Conestoga Middle School,
Kathleen Skidmoore, principal of Greenway Elemenatary School,

This is a message for all Southridge High School,
Conestoga Middle School, and Greenway Elementary School
families. We have been notified that a group from
Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas will be
publicly demonstrating on Friday, Sept. 30 around
dismissal time. They will be protesting the Laramie Project.
We are working with the Beaverton Police Department to ensure
the safety of our school communities.

We expect students to be in all their classes Friday.
This is not a school-sponsored activity.
If you have any questions or concerns, please call any of us.

Of course, no one was at the schools by the time I got home, so I did some research.

For those not in the know, this is the website for the Westboro Baptist Church (WBT):

Here is the press release for the protest:

And for those REALLY not in the know, this is what they are protesting:

A play about the slaying of a young gay man was to be performed at Skyridge and so the WBT is showing up to incite hate.

I hope that people will show in counter protest, I'll be there.
Easy Fix 29.Sep.2005 17:01

There is an easy fix to this. Have as many open-minded, tolerant people of Portland show up at the same time in support of the schools right to perform The Laramie Project.

It may be academic anyway as I read reports that the hate-merchants from Westboro Baptist "Church" are big on talk but usually no-show cowards.

Is Southridge High School even performing the Laramie Project? 29.Sep.2005 17:27

Things get more and more interesting...

I read an article on 365gay.com, a site that has news from all over the place on gay/lesbian issues, just a couple weeks ago that said Southridge High School was being prohibited from performing the Laramie Project due to an "executive decision" by principal Amy Gordon. It said in the article that Ms. Gordon didn't think the play was "age appropriate" and thus had refused the school's drama department permission to perform the play. I actually sent an e-mail to her explaining why I thought the school should be allowed to perform it and how the play promoted tolerance.

Now the Phelps clan is protesting the school. Did Southridge actually perform the play?

Just confirmed their arrival 29.Sep.2005 18:51

I just got off the phone with a member of the Westboro Baptist Church (i hate those people!!!) and they confirmed that they were indeed coming to Beaverton tomorrow at 2pm. I asked if it was still happening even though the play was cancelled. They said yes.
These people are sick and need to be told that they aren't wanted here. I counterprotested them last time they showed up which was a year and a half ago. If we give them a bigger counter-demonstration, maybe it will be even longer until they show up again!
They will be at Southridge High School, 9625 SW 125th Ave, at 2pm. These people are evil, rightous bigots but they are punctual. So show up on time! Bring your flair, your signs, your noisemakers, whatever you feel is necessary to drown out their hate-filled propaganda and support the school and community.
Just think of the in-the-closet students coming out of the high school and seeing that shit.
We HAVE to be there to help them!!

I'm checking the Trimet website now 29.Sep.2005 22:31

I don't have anything going on tomorrow, so I'm going to make an event of it, make a sign, and show up. I was openly gay when I was in high school, and I don't want these kids to see that shit without realizing there's opposition. If you have a day off tomorrow like I do, please try to show up.

Isn't the Christian Taliban wonderful?

The local Christian community should ramp up and turn out to oppose these scumbags.

I wish I could come to stand in solidarity for equality.

Solidarity from Southern California.

I go to Southridge 01.Oct.2005 20:38

The play was cancelled, yes, but now a comittee has been formed to discuss the possibility of showing it in the future. BTW--even though I wasn't there, apparantly lots of students from southridge stood out on the sidewalk on the other side of the street and even TURNED THEIR BACKS on the people. Yay! I had to go to work so I couldn't see it. *sigh* I wish I could've been there.

I went and saw the play last night and it so deeply touched me. One of my absolute best friends was in it and I have never been more proud of him. The play was so amazingly touching, I can't even say and it makes me sad that we could only have it for this one weekend. I only hope that in some small way, this play will have touched at least one other person and that they will pass that on to many more.
