>> Re: Report on D.C. Emergency Truth Convergence, July 22-24, 2005
>>
>> Last Friday was the one-year anniversary of The 9/11 Commission Report, and in celebration of its thoroughness in pursuit of the truth (just kidding), a group of 9/11 family survivors, researchers and activists met in Washington to confer, agitate, testify and share ideas. It was uplifting and informative and I return to my desk refreshed and determined to do more, much more. Yes, it could have been better attended, better organized and more effective, but that's hardly something new. Peter Dale Scott, a former Canadian diplomat, author of Deep Politics, and peace activist put it well: "We're much further along than when I attended a similar rally at Berkeley in 1962 to protest against the Vietnam war."
>>
>> Friday featured Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) presiding over an all-day Briefing on "The 9/11 Commission Report One Year: A Citizens' Response--Did The Commission Get It Right?" This was a break-through event, even though "edgy" researchers like David Ray Griffin and Morgan Reynolds were excluded from the panels. The caucus room in Cannon was far from full, but some 15 cameras were rolling, including C-Span. Although I did not witness the first panel, two of four of the "Jersey Girls" testified, and Lorie Van Auken reportedly was especially stirring. Other participants included big names like Paul Thompson of The Terror Timeline fame, Nafeez Ahmed of The War on Freedom fame, Ray McGovern of ex-CIA fame, John Judge, Michael Ruppert and others, some 30 panelists in all. While the show was all nice and moderate by my standards, Rep. McKinney has been the lone stand-up in the House of Representatives on 9/11 and we will hear more from her on 9/11. She even has John Judge of assassinationscience.com and 9/11 Citizens Watch fame on her legislative staff.
>>
>> In the afternoon of July 22, I attended a National Press Club event for alternative (non-mainstream) media which featured brief statements about the 9/11 failure of the mainstream media by David Ray Griffin of The New Pearl Harbor fame, Paul Thompson of The Terror Timeline, and Danny Schecter, a media producer and veteran of stints at CNN, 60 Minutes and ABC. The session was moderated by Peter Phillips of Sonoma State University and his annual Project Censored for the most censored stories of the year.
>>
>> Griffin argued that 9/11 researchers have presented a prima facie case for government complicity in the 9/11 crimes. The government's defense was put forth by the 9/11 Commission but their Report made no attempt to rebut the prima facie case against the government. An objective judge was needed to rule on whether the defendants should be brought to the bar, and "the press should have played this role" but abdicated its responsibility.
>>
>> Paul Thompson said that his role is "neutral, to compile information," but charged that the 9/11 Commission Report was a "white wash and a cover up." He pointed to the Commission's assertion that "no foreign government was involved" but it buried contrary information. And NORAD officials testified under oath regarding the timeline, which was contradicted by the Commission's new timeline, and Thompson asked, "Why weren't these NORAD officials charged with perjury?" Condoleezza Rice also testified under oath and should have been charged with perjury for her lies about the Presidential Daily Briefing of August 6, 2001, Thompson charged.
>>
>> Danny Schechter, producer of Weapons of Mass D

>> eception, came to the microphones and exclaimed, "Please, CBS cameras, don't block NBC, and ABC don't block CNN, move left...," mocking the absence of mainstream media at the event. The lack of curiosity about 9/11 by msm has been amazing and Schechter argued that this was a bigger institutional failure than 9/11 itself because a vigorous fourth estate is vital to our democracy, though he encountered resistance on this point. Schechter said that he had interviewed Thomas Kean before his appointment to head up the 9/11 Commission and felt that he could ask a question at the initial press conference. He asked, "Is Osama bin Laden's history with the CIA going to be a relevant subject in the Commission's work?" Lee Hamilton, vice chair, answered, "It sounds to me like you have an agenda." Schechter pushed back with a follow-up question and Hamilton responded, "Ah ha, you do have an agenda!" No substantive reply was forthcoming, of course, evading the trail of evidence that supports the view that the U.S. government concocts the poison and "antidote" from the same vat.
>>
>> During Q&A, both Griffin and Thompson replayed their failed efforts to get msm interested in 9/11. The only occasional successes have been with Village Voice and Sean Waterman of UPI. Phillips pointed to the ten big media corporations with linked boards of directors as a key.
>>
>> Saturday morning I went to breakfast with Griffin, Scott and Phillips. Scott said that he lives part of the year in Thailand and he made a salient point about Southeast Asia: "During Vietnam we heard constantly that if the US withdrew, the dominoes would fall. Yet it's gone the other way. US military presence creates revolutionaries and opposition, and then withdrawal withers armed resistance and draws those leaders into governments and regular politics."
>>
>> From 11am to 2pm we had speakers at Lafayette Park, in front of the White House. These included David Ray Griffin, Dr. Robert Bowman of Vets for Peace, ex-CIA analyst Ray McGovern, Jenna Orkin of WTC Environmental Organization, Morgan Reynolds = ex-Bush appointee as chief economist at the US Department of Labor, and others. I roused the crowd, if I don't say so myself, with my message that in campaign 2000 George W. Bush promised to restore "honor and integrity to the oval office," and adopt "a more humble foreign policy." I asked, "Five years later, could anything be further from the truth?" "No," the crowd growled back. If we go back in history, we find that Roman poet Ovid penned the expression, "a pious fraud," an apt label for the guy occupying the oval office. And "fraud vitiates everything," according to the legal maxim. David Ray Griffin had earlier referred to the divine vs. the demonic and I extended that idea by quoting Martin Luther: "The Devil has two occupations, to which he applies himself incessantly, and which are the foundation stones of his kingdom--lying and murder." "Fit anyone you know?," I asked. "Yes," roared the crowd. And our prospects for bringing these mass murderers to justice? Some would claim slim and none. Discouraged? No. And even if they were right, as Martin Luther said in 1521, "Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me. Amen." After my speech, I was mobbed and never heard the speeches that followed. But meeting so many people in the 9/11 movement was a major reason for my trip.
>>
>> Then the show moved to American University, with the centerpiece a town hall meeting for Q&A following a presentation by Nafeez Ahmed on his new book, "The War on Truth: 9/11, Disinformation and the Anatomy Terrorism." Here's some info I just received via email:

>> MORE GOOD NEWS: This past Sunday, Ahmed was a featured
>> guest with Fareed Zacharias, host on the PBS show,
>> Foreign Exhange.
>>
>> I've looked at Ahmed's book and did not find it nearly as exciting as his first book, The War on Freedom. Ahmed rightly took some heat for indirectly implying that al Qaeda was a really big problem and taking away the spotlight on false-flag state terrorism. He kept emphasizing facts, all well and good, but largely useless without theory and explicit theory at that. Ahmed admitted in private conversation afterward that he is suppressing his own, more radical ideas in favor of methodical fact-based research and he's gaining a hearing as a moderate. Under challenge, he also acknowledged the vital role of theory but during his talk said he wants to "deal with facts rather than theories." The best panelist following Ahmed was ex-CIA analyst Ray McGovern who did a careful parsing of the Downing St. Memo on its third anniversary. "We all know what 'fixed' means," said McGovern, "INTEL was corrupted." "This session was like the mafia meeting with mafia lawyers," he said, "with no moral sense about the thousands to be killed."
>>
>> That C-Span taped session was followed by a more amorphous continuation, unrecorded by C-Span, with many coming to the microphone to voice opinion on various aspects of 9/11, some pushing agendas some distance from 9/11 itself.
>>
>> Sunday brought workshops in the morning and a plenary strategy session in the afternoon on how to get the word out on 9/11 into the media. I had to leave at noon but attended a couple of good workshops, the first by Jim Hoffman of 911research.net on the WTC collapses and Nicholas Levis and New York attorney Robert Stone on "Bootstrapping Criminal Investigations of Unsolved 9/11 Crimes with Attorney General Complaints and Fraud Charges against the 9/11 Commission." Hoffman's material is almost all available on his website but he made a good comment when challenged that he wasn't a structural engineer: "Planes crashing into skyscrapers are so far outside the experience of structural engineers, and besides, they've made so many stupid statements. And these are simple high-school physics arguments."
>>
>> Attorney Stone had some fascinating material that could produce a suit against the 9/11 Commission for fraud. Such a legal assault must confine itself to fraud committed by the Commission, internal contradictions, not omissions, its principal form of cover up. The suit, that is, must stay within the Commission's argument. Points of attack include doctored maps and flight paths (true vs. magnetic flight paths) and contradictory statements from AA11 attendants Ong and Sweeny. Regarding prosecution, Stone pointed out that even the Arizona attorney general could bring a criminal prosecution because Arizona citizens were murdered in New York. Two veils must be pierced, however, the sovereign immunity doctrine and whether the case is justiciable in a particular court. The party bringing suit must then surmount the four hurdles of standing, rightness, mootness, and political question. Stanley Hilton's suit claimed taxpayer standing but that has only worked once in history, it was claimed. Of course, if Congress ever developed a spine, there is impeachment, conviction and punishment via the constitution.
>>
>> The most likely route to success, in my view, is via the mainstream media. Once the damning case developed by 9/11 researchers finds its way into just one prestigious nationally syndicated column or news show, the government could collapse shortly thereafter. The political landscape would change overnight, and the popularity of bringing the lying, mass murderers to justice would soar. Congressmen and the Eliot Spitzers of the world would climb over each other to bring prosecutions.
