Code Pink Sails Again!

Code Pink Rose Festival Actions
Saturday, June 11, 2005

The Code Pink "Portland Peace Fleet" once again participated in the morning "pre-parade," marching the parade route one hour before the Grand Floral Parade.

This "fun" activity was followed up Saturday afternoon with a more serious action: counter-recruitment down by the waterfront.

SATURDAY MORNING
The Portland Peace Fleet Sails Again!

Code Pink Portland first brought out the "Portland Peace Fleet" in June of 2003, as a symbolic protest to the warships' part in Rose Festival. This year we "sailed" again. Wearing pink cardboard "boats," Code Pinkers marched the parade route one hour before the Grand Floral Parade on Saturday morning. Most of the crowd waiting for the parade seemed pleased to have some entertainment; many applauded and cheered us. There were a few hecklers, of course, but the cheers and applause far out-numbered the naysayers. Occasionally an onlooker would call out, "Support our troops." Our spontaneous response, without missing a beat: "BRING THEM HOME!" developed into a lively call-and-response chant.

Other chants included:

We're the Portland Peace Fleet
We say war is obsolete!

and the highly popular

Taxes for schools - not for war
Taxes for healthcare - not for war
Taxes for housing - not for war

Performances of "We Are The Ladies Pink" (to the tune of "La Dona Mobile" from Rigoletto) received enthusiastic applause.

We are the ladies pink, we're here to make you think
We have a bone to pick with Donald, George and Dick
There war was such a sham, part of their global plan
Illegal warfare for corporate welfare
They are so frightening, need some enlightening
We're here to say: Just give peace a chance.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, give peace a chance.

We are the ladies pink, we're going to raise a stink
We will not stop before we see an end to war
George is not President, he does not represent
Many Americans, peace loving citizens
They are so frightening, need some enlightening
We're here to say: Just give peace a chance.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, give peace a chance.

Our marching song was a hit too:

Everywhere we go
People want to know
Who we are
So we tell 'em
We are the Peace Fleet
The Code Pink Peace Fleet
Everywhere we go ...
etc. (we had some trouble figuring out how to end this!)

The 2005 Portland Peace Fleet parade was deemed a great success,* bringing a message of peace to a wide spectrum of Portlanders. We have even bigger ideas for next year!

* (deemed a great success by ourselves, in all modesty, of course ;~)

SATURDAY AFTERNOON
Counter-Recruitment

After a break to rest our tired feet, we headed over to Waterfront Park, joining other groups (including Vets for Peace and Northwest Vets for Peace) in counter-recruitment activities. The military recruiters were out in force, of course. Our intention was to provide at least a small counterpoint to the war message.

Mingling around the Salmon Street Fountain, we approached passersby, asking: "Would you like to sign a postcard to the Governor asking him to bring the Oregon Guard home from Iraq?" If my experience was typical, perhaps half of those approached seemed delighted to participate; the other half were equally definite in saying no, which we ladies in pink accepted graciously, of course. One woman I spoke with, declining to sign a card, said to me: "I have a son in Iraq, so I support the troops." My quiet, respectful reply: "So do we."

In not much more than an hour, we collected 158 postcards. Eventually, between being asked to leave by Rose Festival staffers, and being truly dumped on the rain, not to mention our aching feet(!), we decided it was time to go home until another day. We most assuredly did NOT declare "Mission accomplished!"

Our postcards will join thousands more gathered over recent weeks. One of our members drove our postcards to Salem the next day, to be added to the wheelbarrow-full of postcards for delivery to the Governor on Monday. Yes, they're literally wheeling a wheelbarrow full of "Bring Home the Troops" postcards into the Governor's office!

We don't know whether the Governor will heed our advice and order the Oregon National Guard home, but at least he will know how many Oregonians feel.
