Dear Fellow Portland Housing/Homeless Activists:

Homelessness is increasing worldwide. Housing costs are skyrocketing. Governments are more inclined to support tax cuts for the wealthy than help for low income people. Drastic cuts of essential entitlement or safety net programs are looming on the horizon--courtesy of the Bush Administration and U.S. Congress.

To truly end homelessness and poverty worldwide, we need to do more than just develop 10 year plans to end homelessness or bureaucracies to study the problem.

This is why the National Coalition for the Homeless, the nation's oldest and largest national homelessness advocacy organization, supports such proactive legislative initiatives as the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund and the Bringing America Home Act. If enacted by Congress, both pieces of legislation would end homelessness in this country.

In addition to tackling the roots causes of poverty (lack of affordable housing, no universal health insurance, and poor-paying jobs) in this country and elsewehere, we support the development/operation of tent cities and other alternative housing models.

We join you in this international day of solidarity pushing for an end to homelessness and poverty today, not ten years from now.

Sincerely,

Michael Stoops

I volunteered here, I'm thankful that someone wrote a post about it. It is a really beautiful place, the camp, the environment. The government treats these people like they have the IQ of a bar of soap, and don't trust them in the least bit. That is not true at all. Speaking to the people who live there I know first hand that they are extremely intelligent beings. You should all volunteer or donate to these types of places to keep them running

I love the way the photos protray the human element of Dignity Village--even illustrating that beauty can be found there despite what people may think. Kudos to the photographer.

Thank you, Matthew, for your good work on behalf of some of those who have the least. As long as eyes like yours are connected to a heart like yours, there is still hope for our society to do the right thing. The richest nation in the history of the world ought to care a lot more for its own people, young to old.

One would think that it was all Jack Tafari's idea. That life at the Village is all fun and games, well there are a lot of games played there. If one is not in the clique they are kicked to the curb. This is a group of elitist homeless people living in filth and squaller. The Village should be shut down and have them all get jobs and join in the rest of soceity and pay their on way. Stop lieing about being subsidized. Death to the Poor !!!
