Friday, June 3, 2005: Campout at Red Mountain Prairie
Join Patrick and Mary, from the Illinois Valley, for a campout at Red Mountain Prairie situated on the Westside of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. Come prepared to camp with shelter and enough food and water. Also bring musical instruments for around the campfire. On Saturday join Walt Schroeder, historian and storyteller, and Fred Bowen, botanist, as they lead their annual quest to Vulcan Lake to find the blooming Kalmiopsis leachiana in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. The hike is rated: Moderately challenging. Vulcan Lake trailhead requires Northwest Forest Pass $5/vehicle (you can pick these up at the Illinois Valley Ranger Station on the way out). View mountains, valleys, old mines, an ancient weeping spruce and the famous purple blossom that grows only here. Register with Southwestern Oregon Community College or just show up, 402 Alder Rd, Brookings. Rated: Moderately challenging.
