PRESS RELEASE- PROPOSAL FOR LECTURE EVENT-
KEYNOTE SPEAKER- WARD CHURCHILL
INFO-MISSION BENEFIT -JUNE 23RD PORTLAND, OREGON
THEME:
U.S MILITARY OUT OF OUR SCHOOLS- SUPPORT COUNTER-RECRUITING
Come and join the many interested activists and Portland public to learn about and discuss counter-recruiting efforts. With the "No child left behind act" and changes in legislation that now allow military recruiters access to Portland public schools, counter recruitment activities are more important then ever. Local residents need to come together and protect the rights of our young people. It is becoming more widely known that recruiters promote military service in a dishonest way. According to Fernando Suarez de Solar, the recent recipient or the War Resisters League Peace Award, recruiters make promises that are grossly exaggerated, such as the amount of financial compensation available when service is completed or the extremely limited college benefits. Because soldiers are typically recruited from minority communities across the nation where access to alternative information about the hazards of war is limited, it is the responsibility of the general public to provide education on military service and the possible long term consequences. Now with the advent of the stop loss program, also referred to as the "backdoor draft" we must accelerate these efforts to ensure that high school students and college students are not easy prey for these ruthless recruiters.
JOIN US:

7:00- Dr. Mohammed Daud Miraki speaks on the war in Afghanistan; why we will continue to maintain a troop presence and Depleted Uranium poisoning and how it is a danger to our troops. Dr. Miraki currently heads the Afghan DU Recovery Fund and is developing a Free University in Afghanistan that will enable research on depleted uranium effects on human populations as well as the environment. Dr. Miraki has written an ambitious plan that not only attempts to clean up contaminated soil but also treats Afghans for DU related illness.
7:30- Professor Ward Churchill will speak on his perspectives of the war on terrorism and how it relates to the American public. He will explain why counter recruiting and public action is critical at this time. Highlighting the importance of moving beyond our comfort zones and why there will be no changes in the war or the rampant disregard for constitutional rights until the public demands it.
All proceeds will be used to develop and distribute the mobile exhibition on depleted uranium. It will consist of a 10-piece b/w photo display, the video "Axis of Whose Evil" and assorted multi-media informational pamphlets. The exhibition will be offered for free to libraries, schools and colleges.
