Anti-Sprawlmart Campaign around Portland - Gresham Update

"Gresham First" < greshamfirst@hotmail.com>
Subject: CAMPAIGN UPDATE / SAT. RALLY
Form Letter to Gresham City Council
Form Letter to Gresham City Council
Friends,

Over 50 concerned citizens attended this week's City Council meeting to
demonstrate opposition to the proposed Wal-Mart. While we had hoped
for a
larger turnout, we must congratulate those who attended for their
continuing
efforts on this campaign. Speakers did a wonderful job of presenting
our
research on the potential economic impacts to our community. While our
goal
was to address issues not related to land use, the staff allowed our
comments to be included as testimony in the permit application records.
We
submitted a letter to the Council with copies of our research urging
them to
conduct their own economic impact study. It is very important that we
keep
pressure on the City Council to take a stand on this issue, and move to
protect our community. Wal-Mart isn't in the habit of backing down,
but
communities across the country are standing up. We urge everyone to
express
your concerns in writing, and have attached a form letter with concerns
that
may be addressed by our City Government.

This weekend we need volunteers to help raise public awareness of our
campaign and upcoming fundraiser. We will be at the intersection at
182nd &
Powell (Safeway parking lot) from 11am - 2pm, RAIN OR SHINE and need
help
with the following tasks:

STREET CORNER RALLY: Help sell signs, gather signatures and wave at
traffic. Family and friends are welcome!

DOOR-TO-DOOR: Share project information, gather signatures to the
petition
and offer yard signs. We encourage members to canvass with a partner
and
will help to connect volunteers. We will provide campaign materials
and
maps of neighborhoods to track canvassed areas.

DISTRIBUTE FLYERS: Place leaflets on door-steps - NO CONTACT REQUIRED
-
GREAT FOR STUDENTS! We have flyers requesting donations or items for
our
upcoming rummage sale. These new flyers need to go out to ALL homes
in the
neighborhood ASAP!

The sale will be held Saturday April 23, from 10am-5pm at West Gresham
Elementary. We are seeking new or used saleable items to raise money
for
our legal fund. Preferably, items should be dropped off at the school
Friday, April 22 from 4-9pm. We will arrange pickup or delivery
beginning
Saturday, April 16 for those needing special accommodations.

T-shirts will be available at Saturday's rally. We hope to see you and
your
family as we continue this important effort. Let's keep the momentum
alive
and raise money for our legal defense!
