Attention: Liberal, Progressive, Left Wing Bloggers

The Terri Shiavo case is not news.
The Terri Shiavo case is not an issue. The Terri Shiavo case is not something that is worth writing about. We all know what the real issues are! The Terri Shiavo case is not a real issue. It is an attempt by the conservatives to send an emotional message to their faithful and distract the rest of us from their lies and deceit. It appears that bloggers all over the country are posting and commenting on this corporate media generated circus. We need to stick to the issues that we all know need to be addressed and let the clowns run their circus.

It's a nonissue designed to distract. It's time to focus on truly important issues.

The Shiavo case, which is very tragic and should be very private, is a smoke screen for a zillion things and it is a means to get the "crazy-Christans" (not to be confused with other Christians and crzies) to become reactive and inturn the "left" to react and ignore the real stories. The real issues are (just to name a few):

the second anniversary of the invasion of Iraq

war dead (on all sides)

the Gannon scandal which leads to Rove

the state sponsored news as legitamate news

global warming

election fraud (both 2000 and 2004)

bankruptcy and debt laws

collapsing economy

No bin Laden

9-11 information (ranging from 51 warning before Sept 11th to bin Laden's escape in Tora Bora)

EPA's CHEERS program to experiment on low income non white children

Enron-ization of everything including the bathroom sink

not a smoke screen, but bourgeois infighting 26.Mar.2005 21:47

ian wallace

the shiavo case is most likly a pretext for the republician majority to do away with the ability to filibuster judicial nominationss in the senate. you see, it's the liberal judges that hate human life...

elites don't make such a big deal over something unless they have a goal. i don't think it they need to send up a smoke screen to cover their ass on iraq, 9-11 or what the fuck ever. after all, american idol is coming up next on the t.v., and howard stern is gonna have a stripper break dance on the back of a donkey on air.

the contuined decline of the democractic party as even loyal opposition is really rather pathitic.

organize revolutionary unions and organizations. all power to the workers of the world. and spell check on indymedia sites as well please.

Definitely not news ... 26.Mar.2005 23:46

Nagasaki

I agree (as an ex-journalist, no less) that the Terry Shiavo case is NOT genuine news. Certainly, this very same thing is going on in many states at all times and is very common place. Sad as the situation may be, it is not particularly news worthy, lest it's the "Community" section in a local paper. It is certainly not worthy of national or international coverage (nor was the Scott Peterson story).

But I would disagree that the goal is to put up a smoke screen to cover up 9-11, Iraq, pending wars in Iran or what have you, for the corporate media already does a wonderful job keeping most people firmly distracted from genuine news.

Undoubtedly, the real goal behind this is the continuation of furthering the agenda of the fascist evangelical Christian right and so-called "American Family Values". By doing that, there is no need to erect smoke screens to cover up the torture of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay or the endless stream of dead civillians in Iraq or Afghanistan.

When the shit hits the fan again over war crimes or dead Iraqi children, watch what happens.

Bu$h will say "No we'd never, ever, do something like that. We're a peaceful nation. We don't target civillians or use torture. We love life - even the lives of unborn babies and poor unfortunates like Terry Shiavo."

And the Amerikan people will swallow it; hook, line and sinker. They do it EVERY time.

Just wait and see.

eyes closed tight

NO to stem cells, YES to terry schiavo.

This IS news, aka corp. media infotainment, they are not gov't. watchdogs but promoters, it's a business and propaganda arm for the government. They are trying to appeal to the happy homemakers and belligerent beer drinkers. That's their market and why it's like watching programming for a 7th grader. It's not even fun yelling at the tv anymore, it's been dumbed down so much, the thrill is gone. Any one of us could sit down with one of these talking heads and run circles around them. Corp. news has no edge, it's watered down, just like everything corporations touch. From hollywood, to chain restaurants...they want us dumb, those are the best consumers. Wether you think it's a conspiracy or good marketing, it's still CaCa Culo.

Even NPR did a number on the "VNRs" virtual news releases(aka infomercials). The dept. of education spewed out some no child crap, incorrect numbers, and a couple of "professors" and sent the propaganda channels these releases which were read word for word from local stations. They even read one of these news releases and then played you the voice of a newscaster, regurgitating it word for word. No fact checking. Why do you think we're getting the pentagon station? Now you will here the o'reilly's and limbaughs quoting, "a source at the pentagon" as if you can believe anything our government says.

If it's corporate, chances are it's out to screw you somehow. Buy this, think this, eat this, be this...Goebbels would of loved the kind of power modern corp. media has, they would of taken over the world with these kind of information networks. Oh wait, that's right, they are. With murdoch securing the deal with the chinese, they don't even know they're getting screwed with intelligence moles using newscasters as cover. This is why the freedom fighters in Iraq abduct journalists, they are aware that the CIA uses that as a cover.

US Tv news is second tier information that has been filtered for "good citizens". Next week the democrats and republicans will move from arguing about terry, to the breadcrumbs I see now. Next week's souffle de gahbahge: the UN oil for food scandal is coming back for another round.

We could spike the headline before it happens:

"US Corp. Media has fill with terry schiavo, looks for next distraction in Kofi Annan"

It's pure maShiavollian politics 27.Mar.2005 09:21

In my opinion, the whole Shiavo episode is pure MaShiavollian politics. That's an aspect of the story that I don't think has been looked at yet. Machiavellian

"It's time to focus on truly important issues"

They are. They are focusing on what is important to THEMSELVES. Don't you understand, that's a matter each of us gets to decide for oursleves, what WE consider important.

The "truly important" issues you speak about, I agree that they are the truly important issues TO YOU. I might consider entirely different issues to be the ones that are truly important. As long as you take the attitude that we can't begin until I agree to accept YOUR version of truth about what is really important we will never be able to organize ourselves. The problem is NOT getting us all to agree on "truth" but figuring out how we can work together (and on what) in spite of our disagreements. We need to find out.

a) What things we DO agree upon (no problem there)
b) What things we do not agree are "truly important" but at least are not in conflict upon. Things which I think are important and you irrelevant (don't care) and things you think are important but I think irrelevant (don't care) and how we can work toghter on a basis of mutual support.

That's how we are getting beat, my friends, because our enemies have managed to put together a coalition based upon mutual DISJOINT (not shared) interests. The Neo-Liberal capitalists don't care about the social issues of the social conservatives (actually, they probably disapprove but figure that their wealth will shield themsleves from social repression -- THEIR women can afford plane tickets to Sweeden if abortion becomes unavailable here). Similarly the Social Coinservatives aren't actually in favor of rapacious capitalism, but consider the wealth of this world irrelevant compared to their souls.

A good deal of the battle is precisely the matter of controllign WHICH are the issues ver which the battle will be fought. Crying bitterly that you are losing because the wrong issues are the ones in contention is silly. You need to do something about that. If you feel that it should be other issues that are the "truly important" ones you need to CONVINCE people of that. Need to change their minds with regard to which issues they care about most.

DeLay's Own Tragic Crossroads 27.Mar.2005 10:00

Tom "thumbs" delay

Family of the lawmaker involved in the Schiavo case decided in '88 to let his comatose father die.

CANYON LAKE, Texas ? A family tragedy that unfolded in a Texas hospital during the fall of 1988 was a private ordeal ? without judges, emergency sessions of Congress or the debate raging outside Terri Schiavo's Florida hospice.

The patient then was a 65-year-old drilling contractor, badly injured in a freak accident at his home. Among the family members keeping vigil at Brooke Army Medical Center was a grieving junior congressman ? Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas).

More than 16 years ago, far from the political passions that have defined the Schiavo controversy, the DeLay family endured its own wrenching end-of-life crisis. The man in a coma, kept alive by intravenous lines and oxygen equipment, was DeLay's father, Charles Ray DeLay.

Then, freshly reelected to a third term in the House, the 41-year-old DeLay waited, all but helpless, for the verdict of doctors.

Today, as House Majority Leader, DeLay has teamed with his Senate counterpart, Bill Frist (R-Tenn.), to champion political intervention in the Schiavo case. They pushed emergency legislation through Congress to shift the legal case from Florida state courts to the federal judiciary.

And DeLay is among the strongest advocates of keeping the woman, who doctors say has been in a persistent vegetative state for 15 years, connected to her feeding tube. DeLay has denounced Schiavo's husband, as well as judges, for committing what he calls "an act of barbarism" in removing the tube.

In 1988, however, there was no such fiery rhetoric as the congressman quietly joined the sad family consensus to let his father die.

"There was no point to even really talking about it," Maxine DeLay, the congressman's 81-year-old widowed mother, recalled in an interview last week. "There was no way [Charles] wanted to live like that. Tom knew ? we all knew ? his father wouldn't have wanted to live that way."

Doctors advised that he would "basically be a vegetable," said the congressman's aunt, JoAnne DeLay.

When his father's kidneys failed, the DeLay family decided against connecting him to a dialysis machine. "Extraordinary measures to prolong life were not initiated," said his medical report, citing "agreement with the family's wishes." His bedside chart carried the instruction: "Do not resuscitate."

On Dec. 14, 1988, the DeLay patriarch "expired with his family in attendance."

"The situation faced by the congressman's family was entirely different than Terri Schiavo's," said a spokesman for the majority leader, who declined requests for an interview.

"The only thing keeping her alive is the food and water we all need to survive. His father was on a ventilator and other machines to sustain him," said Dan Allen, DeLay's press aide.

There were also these similarities: Both stricken patients were severely brain-damaged. Both were incapable of surviving without medical assistance. Both were said to have expressed a desire to be spared from being kept alive by artificial means. And neither of them had a living will.

This previously unpublished account of the majority leader's personal brush with life-ending decisions was assembled from court files, medical records and interviews with family members.

This is just some more liberal relativist bullshit. Global warming is an important issue. This is a fact and has nothing to do with my or your opinion. Whole sections of the world oceans turned into dead zones, this is an important issue. Peak oil is an important issue. It doesn't matter what you think about it, it is important.

Only a person in an extreme state of denial would say these are not important.

There is no peak oil. It's all a sham.

Terri is important, unless you are a closet rightist pretending you are leftist who wants to off all the handicapped simply because they are handicapped.

Lots of fellow travelling fascists on the left I see.

She ain't terminally ill. She ain't in a coma. She isn't on a feeding tube except for her husband who wants to keep hoping for her death and the court suit million he won for terri ten years ago that he is on record of wishing "when will that bitch die?"

more on the case, for those with an empirical cast of mind, instead of a Reich-wing attitude toward the weak and defenseless.

Dirty Connections - The Bias
Of Judge George Greer
From Hyscience:
3-27-5

After reading the following information, I am in shock that this can be allowed in our country. Judge George Greer, who has consistently ruled against Terri Schiavo's right to life, clearly has a conflict of interest in this case. Why isn't the media questioning this? Why is he being allowed to get away with this? Read for yourself and see if you aren't as outraged as I am.

Judges are impartial, right? Not Judge George Greer, the judge that has ordered Terri Schiavo executed by starvation and dehydration, twice.

Our good ole boy judge has worked side by side as county commissioner with Barbara Sheen Todd (county commissioner) for eight years. Barbara Sheen Todd is on the board of, you guessed it, the hospice where Terri Schiavo is kept prisoner by her husband, Michael Schiavo, who lives with another woman that he has two children with.

Also, Judge Greer's fellow judge, Judge John Lenderman is the brother of Martha Lenderman, also on the, you got it, the same hospice board.

Our fine judge accepted as the basis of his rulings, the questionable testimony of Michael Schiavo that Terri would wish to be killed, yet Michael never stated this until after he had received the 1.2 million dollar settlement during which time he portrayed himself as a loving husband that just wanted to bring his wife home and take care of her.

The judge also accepted as the basis of his rulings, the "opinion" of a third doctor who is the brother of a close associate of George Felos, Michael Schiavo's right-to-kill attorney, and very significantly, former Chairman of, you got it again, the same hospice board, Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, which operates Woodside Hospice in Pinellas Park, Florida.

Still have some hair left? Let's see what we can do about that!

Mary Laybak, CEO of Woodside Hospice has direct ties to Euthanasia Society of America and Hemlock for Hospice, an organization that seeks to accelerate the dying process. Federal funds may not be used for these purposes.

The Hospice is a federally funded program designed for terminally ill and those whose death is eminent. Terri has been in Woodside Hospice illegally for three years under Medicaid payments, for free, courtesy of, yep, George Felos. Felos combined and conspired with Michael Schiavo to arrange for Terri's "free" stay at Hospice Woodside as part of an "exit protocol" designed to advance Felos' self-perceived messianic mission of "helping" incapacitated people to die by categorizing them as "terminal," warehousing them, and depriving them of therapy and rehabilitation services.

US Dept of Health and Human Services is currently trying to collect $14.8 million from Florida Suncoast Hospice, owed to them since 1997. The squeaki-clean(not) Hospice is accused of patient brokering and several lawsuits filed by Attorney Jonathan Alpert are pending.

And back to our friend the judge, just what kind of testimony has he weighted to put Terri in a hell on earth without chance of parole?

Judge Greer refused to acknowledge testimony of 10 doctors and 3 nurses who have cared for Terri and who testify that:

a) Terri is not in a persistive vegetative state

b) Terri is able to be rehabilitated with care and therapy

c) Terri's original injuries are questionable and consistent with spouse abuse and attempted strangulation

d) Terri has been abused and neglected by her husband; denied treatment for infection and possible attempted murder while in nursing home care (discovery of empty insulin vial and temperature in room set at 64 degrees)

Judge Greer instead chose to believe contrary testimony by two of Michael's representatives who are:

a) A doctor who rarely sees Terri (Dr. Gambone who has now resigned as Terri's doctor)

b) Ronald Cranford, Hannipeg County Medical Center , Minnesota who makes an avocation of testifying in cases such as Terri's throughout the country, always on the side of dehydration and starvation.

Had enough yet? Wonder what should have been done for Terri? Take a look here.

Case For Criminal Investigation Of Michael Schiavo
From Hyscience:
3-27-5

1) Nurses' testimony: Heidi Law, Carla Sauer-Iyer, Carolyn Johnson have been ignored and dismissed without hearing; each testified that Michael was abusive to Terri and may have attempted to kill her by insulin injection and attempts to induce pneumonia by turning the thermostat in her room to 64 degrees.

2) Michael Baden, top forensic pathologist in country and interviewed on Fox News National Television broadcast October 25, 2003 on Terri's bone scan and injuries states that:

a) Terri's injuries are not consistent with a heart attack; no cardiac evidence to support it b) Extremely rare for potassium imbalance on woman her age and in her good health
c) Injuries are consistent with severe trauma possibly caused by a beating
d) The injuries in medical records warrant an immediate investigation

3) Dr. William Hammesfahr, Nobel prize nominee and neurologist testified that Terri's neck injuries are consistent with only one type of injury: that of strangulation.

4) Terri's doctor, Dr. Gambone resigned; he had previously testified Terri would die within a few days of starvation/dehydration. Terri has an obvious will to live.

5) Michael has enlisted the services of a new doctor, Stanton Tripodis, who has 5 malpractice suits against him. Clearly, Michael is attempting to provide sub-standard care for his wife.

Case no. 97007946C1 filed 11-25-97
Case no. 94003739C1 filed 6-27-94
Case no. 95000873C1 filed 2-14-95
Case no. 96001434C1 filed 3-6-96
Case no. 98002289C1 filed 4-7-98

6) Michael is committing adultery by living with another woman who has already born one child with another on the way, thereby creating an obvious conflict of interest as guardian.

7) Michael has committed both perjury (2 counts) and insurance fraud by promising to provide care and therapy for his wife in exchange for the court award of 1.2 million dollars in 1993. No care has ever been provided to Terri.

8) Michael Schiavo has also prevented Terri from undergoing a barium swallow test, a procedure necessary to ascertain the consistency of foods able to be taken by mouth.

9) Co-conspirator George J. (Attorney Felos is Director of Florida Right to Die and has testified that he can ascertain a person's desire to die by "looking into their eyes and letting their spirit speak directly to him")

10) Investigate Insurance company established in Jan 2001 at the home of Michael Schiavo and his girlfriend/fiancee Jody Centonze. (Jerger and Centonze Insurnace Agency Inc.) Michael is listed on the Board of Directors for the corporation. Note: Insurance is deliberately misspelled in the State of Florida Corporate filing, possibly to avoid investigation.

11) Michael continues to deny Terri the right to receive Holy Communion as part of her Catholic and civil right.

Dr. States Terri Struck On
Head AFTER Her
Initial Trauma
3-26-5

Doctor states that Terri was hit on the head between day 2 and 6 after collapse FEB/March 1990; Suffered intracranial hemorrhage while in hospital.

(This suggests someone visited her in the hospital and struck her while she lay in bed. -ed)

"In another emerging revelation, another neurologist who examined the timeline of Terri's brain scans found that for the first three days of her initial hospitalization in 1990, her brain scans were normal. Then suddenly, on the sixth day, her brain scan showed evidence of a massive injury. He concludes that Terri was hit on the head and suffered intracranial hemorrhage while in the hospital. The physician maintains that she did not suffer her brain damage outside the hospital but while she was hospitalized.

According to the physician, if the reports produced are accurate (normal CT brain on Feb. 27, injury on Feb. 25, 1990) then she did not suffer an event of massive ischemia on Feb. 25, 1990, the date of her alleged 'collapse' The physician says that there is no radiologist or neurologist or neurosurgeon in the world that would dispute this as it is impossible. The CT on Feb. 27, 1990, would have been grossly abnormal."

The entire article including Terri's NORMAL original brain scan is at:

Most of you are right on the mark!! 27.Mar.2005 13:00

Bird Dog

The Terri Shiavo case is not the issue, it is nothing more than a smoke screen to distract while they continue their agenda when it comes to invading everything in our lives.

They think they have not only the right, but the responsibility by their warped religious belief system to invade our lives as they wish.
And then when they FUCK up things for people, they just say that it must have been part of gods plan.

It's a bit like dumping their stock once the market tanks.
The idea is to leave someone else holding the bag.

And of course lets not forget their revolving door of judgment.
Only when they are the ones pointing the finger is it a good thing.
When they get caught lying about things like the reasons to go to war and thousands upon thousands of people die.
They just muster up another lie to cover the last one where they got caught.

It's time for people to open their eyes and realize that religon is the most dangerous thing on this planet, next to nukes.
It gives people with deformed minds the justification to judge and control or kill others based on their warped belief system.

"It's time for people to open their eyes and realize that religon is the most dangerous thing on this planet, next to nukes.

Um, the religious are actually fighting for Terri's right to life, not her death. You're writing nonsense.

Personally, good or bad can come from mobilized religion. I think hatred of religion is a more dangerous ideology personally because as you say hatred of religion "...gives people with deformed minds the justification to judge and control or kill others based on their warped belief system."

ha?? 27.Mar.2005 14:07

Bird Dog

Great name for a moron.
Must be a troll as well.
The issue is the reich-wing neo-natzi idea that they have the right to rule over other peoples lives.
The woman has been physically dead for over 15 years and her husband wants to let her rest in peace.

But this is a problem to you because you belive she needs to keep living so you can keep your right to someone elses life agenda rolling.

WHat about the mother in texas last week that wanted to keep her newborn alive, but the hospital decided to pull the plug because she did not any insurance.
I guess that one was in one of your books in your bible!!

That six month old had a better chance of living a full life than shiavo.
But they did not have the money.
So out they go.
So don't worry , we know the value and worth of your words.

OPPS!! I just heard a toilet flush!!
By By reich-wing-nut!!

The religionists 27.Mar.2005 17:06

March Hare

The religionists are focusing on the life of one individual, but the same religionists pay no attention to the over 100,000 innocent Iraqis killed by the unjust republican war. These people have such a narrow world view that they can't realize how bizarre they really are. God does not agree with what they are doing.

What we've learned from this lunatic circus 27.Mar.2005 17:26

.

1) Jeb Bush, George W. Bush, and Tom Delay are all qaulified neurologists.

2) 22 successive court battles that all ended in exactly the same way means there is something wrong with the courts, not the Schindler's case.

3) Michael Schiavo is after money which is why he turned down 1 million dollars and 10 million dollars to sign over guardianship.

3a - corollary) Michael Schiavo wants to go off and live the life of a wild playboy, which is why he's spending every waking moment by Terri's bedside.

4) Congress and the State Legislature of Florida has nothing better to do than pry into the private medical affairs of others.

5) Pulling life support is bad in Florida when authorized by the legal next-of-kin, but pulling life support is good in Texas when you run out of money and the mother pleads not to pull the plug on her baby.

5a - corollary) Dying white women deserve special legislation to keep them alive. Dying black babies don't.

6) Medical diagnoses are best performed by watching highly edited videotape made by Randall Terry rather than in person by trained physicians.

7) Minimum wage-making nursing assistants are more qualified to diagnose a persistant vegetative state than experienced neurologists.

8) Cerebral spinal fluid is a magical potion that can mimic the entire functions of a missing cerebral cortex.

9) 15 years in the same persistant state is not really enough time to make an accurate diagnosis.

10) A feeding tube that infuses yellow nutritional goop is not really "life support".

11) Jesus was wrong when he said that a man and woman should leave their parents and cleave only to each other.

12) Marriage is the most sacred of all unions, except when it isn't.

13) Interfering in a family's private tragedy is a great reason to cut short a vacation, but getting a memo that warns a known terrorist is determined to strike inside the US isn't.

14) Right wing pro-lifers are the most compassionate people on Earth ... which is why they are hoping that Michael Schiavo dies a horrible painful death, and in some cases, robbing gun stores or offering money online to make sure it happens.

15) The Supreme Court of the United States and the State Supreme Court of Florida mean "Maybe" when they are saying "No!".

16) Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia is a bleeding heart liberal.

17) 7 Supreme Court Justices were appointed by Republican presidents, so it's Clinton's fault.

18) A judge who makes rulings based on the law is obviously an atheist, liberal, Democratic activist even though he is a conservative, Republican, Southern Baptist.

19) Getting nominated for a Nobel Prize involves merely the recommendation of an American politician.

20) Terri's parents were so overwhelmed that Terri tried to tell them, on March 15, that "I waaaaaant to live," that they somehow forgot to mention it to the courts until they filed a brief ten days later.

Like most people in this country, most fundamentalists also disagree with the federal government becoming involved in this case. So don't be too sweeping in the generalizations. It looks like it's just the bush supporting aristocracy and their loyal brownshirts that are backing the federal government. Even the bush supporting base, from evangelical christians to self-proclaimed conservatives, does not support the federal government's intervention into this case. Most people recognize that those who are not involved can not make an accurate or informed decision, so it must be left to those who are involved and whomever they choose to involve. I think many people also see the the glaring contradictions in statements being made by the parents and many people have a hunch, given the level of distraction over this case that there is a lot of money changing hands (someday we'll learn who's paying Carla Sauer Iyer). Anyway, believe what you will, and leave the decision to those involved.

what it is 28.Mar.2005 08:48

If anything, I hope the Schiavo case helps people in general reflect on the fact that it is cruel and inhumane to maintain life support for an extended period of time when it is well known that the patient is in a persistent vegetative state. That, plus, it should not be a congressional matter. Congress and the Senate should stay out of legislating (and puffing themselves up on) such matters. It is a family matter. And, legally, the patient's guardian or durable power of attorney is the person who makes the final decision. People (her parents in this case)want to hold onto hope that the patient will get better and experience some kind of miracle. But this is most often magical thinking. They need to let go in order to do the most loving thing for the patient.

Schiavo case a jumping-off point... 29.Mar.2005 09:41

In and of itself, the Terri Schiavo case isn't that important. It's a very mediagenic, persistent news story. HOWEVER, it will separate Tom DeLay from the rest of the Republican Party, and responsible media (not the corporate media) will focus on DeLay's slimy fundraising.

DeLay isn't the only one doing what he's doing, and more slime will come out about many other politicians as a result of DeLay's impending downfall. That's what progressives and liberals should focus on - not the immediate outcome of the Schiavo case, but its effects on DeLay and other corrupt members of Congress.
