republicans object to guns in the hands of brown people

"Speaking during a visit to Brazil, Mr Rumsfeld said he could not see what Venezuela would do with the weapons. He added he personally hoped the purchase would not go ahead."
[ from the BBC ]

US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has expressed concern about plans by Venezuela to buy 100,000 Russian AK-47 assault rifles.

Speaking during a visit to Brazil, Mr Rumsfeld said he could not see what Venezuela would do with the weapons.

He added he personally hoped the purchase would not go ahead.

Relations between the two countries have been tense since Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez accused the US of trying to kill him.

Washington has suggested the rifles could end up in the hands of the Colombian rebel group Farc - a claim rejected by Venezuela.

A senior US defence official told the Associated Press news agency the weapons were expected to arrive in a few months' time.

reading between the lines:

Washington has suggested the rifles could end up in the hands of the Colombian rebel group Farc--a drug lord group that Bush family allied drug lords fight in their control for Colombia--a claim rejected by Venezuela. Venezuela then said "we want these guns to protect ourselves from you, Rumsfeld. You already tried to set up a little oil protectorate under my ex-oil minister Camora remember?"

just wondering? 24.Mar.2005 09:32

Which is a bad motor scooter, if in competent hands. I saw the air show. A conflict with Chavez would be bloody and expensive. He is arming his people. Like Saddam did. Forming treaties with other nations nearby, Scaring the poop out of the elites. For good reason.

Option of last resort.

Actually, they did not have the latest M type weapons (the M16 variations). They had some from about three military sieries ago, military surplus still from us. THe reason that is important is because if they were BUYING them, they would be the latest (like the M4, an M16 that is shortened). But if they are using M16A1s, that likely means the US military GAVE them to them. Look at, well, just about everything our government did in the last few decades for more evidence.

Another thing, the AK variants (AK47 and the like) can be made in any common metal shop. You can make one from a stop sign and a few car parts with a common drill press and machine tools; they are really simple to make. The guy that designed them made them that way on purpose, because he was a USSR patriot who honestly believed the only way to keep his homeland safe was to have many many guns surrounding it (it was the mid 1940's, if that is any explanation for his beliefs). Venezuala does not need to buy these guns, they can easily make them, so look for other reasons for a publicly announced purchase.

The Tyranical Corporates can't stand it. They've convinced the silent majority that it is evil, when in fact countries can prosper from democratic socialism, if they don't have to be at war all the time from Corporate Backed Armies.

no you can't 24.Mar.2005 21:27

You need a steel stamping platform and a gun drill lathe. You need controled metallurgy to have one that is reliable. A electroplating tank is also needed for the surfacing. Show me one you made from the above parts, please.
Also, the M16 is the world's worst combat weapon. It is cute, however.

There is a huge difference between making one, and making one right. With that in mine, you don't need to electroplate anything, the barrel can be lathed out on a drill press with supporting blocks (with musket-like accuracy and a slight tendency to explode, but hey), and the steel stamping platform can be made by anyone who can make the rest of this stuff.

If you want to make a zip gun, please for your own sake, don't try to have it auto load. Luck holds out only so long.
Now a friend of mine years ago, made an aluminum receiver for a.50 machine gun barrel and we used armor piercing ammo in a single shot mode. Drilled trough 3+ foot diameter, hard sandstone boulders. Muzzle flash the size of my VW bug.
