PCUN Legislative Action Alert: House Bill Seeks Drivers License Ban for Undocumented Immigrants: A public hearing is scheduled in the House Transportation Committee on Wednesday, March 23, 1 p.m. in Hearing Room C for HB 2608, which requires proof of citizenship or legal residence to obtain a driver's license, permit, or identification card in Oregon. This piece of anti-immigrant legislation does nothing for homeland security and will only put Oregonians at risk because it will lead to an increase in unlicensed, uninsured drivers on the road. Similar bills, labeled by the Latino community as "Driving while Hispanic," were defeated in the 1995 and 2003 legislative sessions.
We are calling upon our supporters to come testify against HB 2608. Resources and talking points can be found at http://www.nilc.org/immspbs/DLs/index.htm .

I am writing to you today to express my strong opposition to HB 2608, which is scheduled for a hearing in the Transportation Committee on March 23. The denial of drivers licenses to non-citizens and non-residents does nothing to provide increased security to Oregonians, but instead stands out as a blatantly anti-immigrant piece of legislation that will only lead to an increase in unlicensed, uninsured drivers on Oregon's roads. Sincerely,
