VIDEO/Text: Secret Bush plans for Iraq's oil BEFORE 9/11, by Greg Palast

Iraqi-born Falah Aljibury says US Neo-Conservatives planned to force a coup d'etat in Iraq
Two years ago today - when President George Bush announced US, British and Allied forces would begin to bomb Baghdad - protesters claimed the US had a secret plan for Iraq's oil once Saddam had been conquered.

In fact there were two conflicting plans, setting off a hidden policy war between neo-conservatives at the Pentagon, on one side, versus a combination of "Big Oil" executives and US State Department "pragmatists".

"Big Oil" appears to have won. The latest plan, obtained by Newsnight from the US State Department was, we learned, drafted with the help of American oil industry consultants.

Insiders told Newsnight that planning began "within weeks" of Bush's first taking office in 2001, long before the September 11th attack on the US.

We saw an increase in the bombing of oil facilities and pipelines [in Iraq] built on the premise that privatisation is coming

Mr Falah Aljibury
An Iraqi-born oil industry consultant, Falah Aljibury, says he took part in the secret meetings in California, Washington and the Middle East. He described a State Department plan for a forced coup d'etat.

Mr Aljibury himself told Newsnight that he interviewed potential successors to Saddam Hussein on behalf of the Bush administration.

VIDEO/Text: "The Powers of Nightmares": Fantasy of "war on terror"

BBC

"The Powers of Nightmares" is a documentary series aired on BBC news channel last November and tackling today's nightmare vision of an organised terror network; a fantasy that politicians found to restore their power and authority in a disillusioned age.

"The Power of Nightmares" explores how the idea that the world is threatened by a hidden and organised terrorist network is nothing but an illusion, a myth that has spread unquestioned through politics, the security services and the international media.

bush said, when he was drumming up support for invading and waging war on Iraq, that "this is not about oil". Yeah, right. And I doubt that he has told a single truth before or since then. And, the democracy that he is so fond of taking credit for establishing in Iraq has only one purpose as far as bushies are concerned, that is, to have a dominant say in the control of the flow of Iraq's oil. Wouldn't it be nicely ironic if true democracy really took root in Iraq and that country took its resources and managed them in the way that they want to and do so in a way that would benefit their people? I think that would be a wonderful outcome and I don't think the bushies would be very happy with it.
