Except the Social Security retirement age (or, to be more accurate, age-range, when benefits begin to be paid) is defined by law. Raising the retirement age would certainly solve or at the least ameliorate tne problem, but critics say while we're living longer, we're not necessarily physically capable of working longer.

You're certainly right about medicare, though. Medicare is the giant pink elephant standing on the scales of the U.S. budget.
