Hello, my name is Jessica Myers and I attend Gladstone High School. On friday I
found out that my school was planning to have a greased pig contest and I was
appalled.
This Tuesday, March 1st at Gladstone High School, a greased-pig contest will be
taking place as one of the spirit week lunchtime activities. A greased pig contest
is when a baby pig is lubricated with lard, oil, or other slippery substances and is
chased down. The pigs are grabbed at, harassed, and often dropped. In many of
these "contests" the pigs are injured, let alone very frightened. Pigs involved in
these often suffer torn ligaments and broken bones. Many schools and sororities
have banned these cruel contests, even 4-H has stated: "Events such as greased pig
contests, calf scramble contests, or other events for entertainment, or in which
youth randomly capture animals from a group or compete against animals, are not
acceptable and will not be planned, supported, or approved for 4-H member
participation." This horrible event is even illegal in such states as Minnesota,
and possibly others.
My mother contacted the principal regarding her concern and he showed no interest in
what she was saying.

there are many two-legged ones that can be used....however,
it may be a challenge to get them greased and penned for the
event. Any takers? ;)
