I was deeply disturbed by the article "God Found in Boot Camps", courtesy of twospirit warrior. Mr. Eldredge's assertion that men reflect the image of God because there is something passionate, fierce and wild in their hearts is a reflection of his privilege. There is nothing adventurous in fighting wars; and the emasculation of men has lead to the subordination of women; which continues to be an ongoing struggle. Rather than "rediscover their passions"; it's time those passions be reevaluated. Nobody's response to "sign them all up; better their sons then mine" is counterproductive because it ignores the bigger picture. If the Christian community's plan of action is to militarize its paritioners, then the free-thinkers and humanitarians must militarize themselves on ideals of courage, action, faith and hope. As difficult as it may be to Love those who are participating in these worldwide military-style camps, it must be done, as they are a part of this world, and to wish for "those idiots to die in the sands of the middle east" does nothing to transcend Eldridge's conception of the hearts of men. It can be hard in times of domination and global tragedy to see the fruition of acts of love, but that does not mean that they are not there, merely that the world needs more of them. I pray that the men participating in these groups rediscover their humanity, and find the true beauty to rescue.
