A new community center will open in NE Portland on February 1.
After having being stabbed in the back by the YMCA, and saying it will close Jan 31, the members decided to make the NE 'Y' into a community center.
The facility at 1639 NE 38 (just off NE Sandy Blvd) has a swimming pool, basketball court/gym, and weight room and cardio vascular machines, showers and saunas. It offers exercise classes for seniors, swimming classes for kids, open basketball times, aerobics and much more.
This place has always welcomed everyone, regardless of whether you are young or old, black or white, gay or straight, man or woman.
The thrust for this community center came from the displaced members. It has nothing to do with the 'C' in the YMCA. I'm not a Christian.
There are two community meetings next Tuesday January 18 at 10 am and 6 pm at the building. This community center has been organised in only weeks so there are many questions and ideas.
Come and be part of the community. Join and have some say in the direction it is going to go in.
Don't give your money to some corporate gym; come to a place where EVERYONE is treated with respect.
