Mysterious "Meme-o-Matic" Appears on NE 28th and Burnside

Biking by the Laurelhurst Theater on NE 28th and Burnside in Portland this afternoon, I noticed an extremely interesting and enigmatic object on the sidewalk: The Meme-o-matic.
The meme-o-matic sits and waits for submissions.

The Meme-o-matic is apparently the work of some creative guerrilla artists, who saw fit to heavily modify a sidewalk newspaper box and chain it down at the corner of East Burnside Street and 28th Avenue. The Meme-o-Matic seems to take alternative media to a completely new level, consisting of an ambiguous and mysterious mechanism which receives public submissions and churns out more media.
Instructions hanging from a nearby utility pole read as follows:

1. media submitted to meme-o-matic goes through a series of incredibly comlicated media filtration and transmutative processes.

2. meme-o-matic discharges new media composed of processed public submission.

3. the public is now free to enjoy the finest in automated publication.

This author encourages readers to pay a visit to the Meme-o-matic as soon as possible before the authorities decide to remove this subversive street presence. And if you dare, "submit," and see what happens.

Mystery? 12.Jan.2005 01:38

...........

This has been there for over a year. No mystery.

Oh? 12.Jan.2005 11:31

Hmm. It's the first I've noticed it. Then again I've been out of town a lot this year. But still, I guess that shows how observant I've been. I'm surprised it hasn't been removed, especially the stuff on the poles. Does anyone know how long it's been there? And have the same people done anything else?

No thanks I'll stick with my beloved "Oregonian" 12.Jan.2005 11:41

Why would I want to read some independent conspiracy theories when I have that pretty, pretty, yellow Oregonian box right across the street? I'll stick to spending my daily .35c on the "REAL NEWS". hahahahahahahahahahahhasahahahahah

Nothing mysterious, just community artwork. It would be a sad day if the city took any of it away. It has been there for a long time and not bothering anybody. Too bad you posted an article about it to get the city's attention. At least with Vera gone maybe they won't be so anal about such things when she's not too preoccupied having a fit about those hooker ads in the back of Willamette Week. If you ask the friendly neighborhood employees of the Starbucks at that intersection you can learn more about it. (I am not one of them or connected with this thing in anyway other than being someone who lives in the community and appreciates it being there.)

More community news/literature distros soon? 12.Jan.2005 13:59

Oni ohmsford@riseup.net

Anyone care to take responsibility for this? I know of a group that would be interested in getting more of them out there. We're all about folks taking the roles of gov't and corp.'s and doing them in a community way. Just an email or snail mail address (maybe not even yours) would suffice. Just want to get a hold of you.

Newspaper boxes on Public Property - legal? 12.Jan.2005 17:40

Newhouse

I've always been VERY curious if the City of Portland charge$ the (B)Oregonian for
each of the newspaper boxes they attach to the public's signs, lamp posts, etc.

I recall during the Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade, the city PIO stated that
it was against city ordinance to attach (chain) anything to the public's
sign posts, lamp posts, etc. The PIO warned that the city would remove the
lawn chairs and all the parade watching crap that is chained up along the
parade route. Will they also remove those unsightly "bird cage liner"
vending machines?

-OR- is the (B)Oregonian exempt from this city ordinance ?

Anyone know? It would surely ruin the Oregonian's day if there were
no exemption (or pay-off) - they'd be in multiple violation.

Please let it be so!

This is a really excellent idea! Way to go. We need these in all the cities of the world. I mean, here at the UO and near campus, we have all kinds of boxes that give out real estate flyers and silly rags that no one needs. In art, we can subtly critique the hollow and meaningless commercial media bullshit and add beauty to the streets. Oh, meme-o-matic posse, get your creative asses down here and get to work. Ya know, now that EPD has pulled their Gulliani stlye clean-up-the-streets bullshit, and kicked the "bums" from panhandling by the street corners...there is a little more space. --j
