He's an electronic engineer graduated in 1982. He's 42 years old. It's now 2004.

So he graduated 2004 - 1982 = 22 years ago.

He was then 42 - 22 = 20 years old.

That's pretty young to graduate in engineering. Assuming you start university at 17 and take 4 years to complete an engineering curriculum (both numbers on the low end of the normal range) you would be 21 years old at graduation. I am surprised that, as an engineer (a numbers guy), he didn't at least comment on these possible but surprising numbers.

What the author doesn't tell us is the reason for his detention. Although his B1/B2 visa is good for a certain period of time, it appears that he overstayed his alloted time on a prior visit. Overstays of less than 180 days result in exclusion from the U.S. for 3 years. Overstays of over 180 days result in exclusion from the U.S. for 10 years. This was existing federal immigration law prior to 2001. However, the law is being enforced more strictly than before. As for the officers, they are not INS officers but officers of a redesignated agency responsible for customs and entry control into this country. My advice to the Brazilian engineer--you would not have placed yourself in the predicament that you found yourself if you had complied with U.S. immigration laws during your prior visit.

I am the Assistant Senior Customs Officer at LAX. I was on staff the when Mr Abude was detained. He has left out some improtant details about his "ordeal." He was extremely uncooperative. For the first 2 hours Mr. Abunde "forgot" he new English. He quickly remembered the language when he realized his stay would be prolonged. His passport's photo was altered and could not give a reason for the alteration. There are many other things I can go into, but I have already walked a thin line sharing these details. All the facts of this case must be discussed to paint an accurate picture.

So, if an otherwise law-abiding professional from Brazil overstays his visa from a previous trip, he is rightfully subjected to co-ercion, dehydration and threats of starvation? To say nothing of the sexual harrassment and racially-motivated abuse of the other prisoners?

This is exactly why I got out of law enforcement; I simply couldn't stand to breathe the same air as the throngs of sociopathic sadists that hide behind a gun and a badge.

It's always the same crap. Knock a couple teeth out of a mexican? Hey, he should have had proof of insurance. Catch a 'freebie' from a streetwalker while she's cuffed? She should have found a different profession. Plant a gun on a bad shoot? The kid shouldn't have tried to run from the po-lice.. and on and on and on.

There's bad apples in every bunch, but when this sadistic, criminal activity becomes institutionalized and legitimized you've realy got a problem... as the debacle in Abu Ghraib lavishly illustrated. Of course, that wasn't 'technically on American Soil', either.. but it still spoke volumes about the national character (and the people whose job it *should* be to represent her in a reasonably professional and honorable way).

Those who are drawn into the lie and bound by the truth of their actions will increasingly say they are doing good, legal things... by their fruits you shall know them.

1....however you should be aware..one day the "fact" that some places at lax are "not US soil" will be overturned...and then there WILL be consequences..for you and the other INS officers..I'm sure your union has advised you of this

2...the fact that you parade them before the "audience" in taking them from one cell to another..IS "...taking them ONTO US soil.."

that you check out your staff more. I too have come thru customs at your airport and seen with my own eyes how the staff treat certain people. There is really no need for handcuffs / bad manners or male staff doing body checks on females. Yes, I too had to wait for a friend who had for some reason on your part been detained - no visa violation - no luggage violation - She was just blonde and well stacked. Your male staff wanted to check if her breasts were real or plastic and she refused to answer so they took her out of queue instead for a body frisk. We will never return to USA - Our business dealings are being wound up in your country. Yes, we too have lodged a complaint with the American Embassy in London and lodged a complaint with British foreign affairs. So don't come it D. In 1976 I was attending engineering school in what should have been my senior year
however I took 5 years to graduate. I had the pleasure of attending classes with one A. Ghupta
who was 15 at the time, he wasnt even old enough to drive and he was taking senior level
engineering courses. So my point is don't focus on the trite portion of the story
and realize that we are basically living in a full blown fascist state. Our government
has adopted policies, procedures, and enacted laws that surely have Stalin and Hitler

It seem's people in law enforcement ALWAYS take sides with other law enforcement personel (be they right or wrong.Im an American citizen (NATIVE AMERICAN),several years ago,my irlfriend and i returned from a trip to England.Upon or return,to Ohare int airport,we were escorted to a room where to armed INS bullies frisked in front of me while the abusers laughed in my faced, and dared me to do anything about it.I won't bore you with the details of thr red tape that came from my complaint.After more than 20hrs of being held against or will,given no food,water ,or phone call,subjected to the most horrible verbal abuse that i've ever experienced,we were released.
I did'nt get mad, I WAS TOLD THEY GOT WHAT WAS COMING TO THEM.After more than 4 months of gathering personal information about my 2 abusive INS personel,(1 AT A TIME) THE 2 OF THEM SUFFERED CAREER ENDING ACCIDENTS.
ABUSER # 1 THE FRISKER HAD AMEETING WITH A LOUISVILLE SLUGGER ONE NIGHT AFTER WORK AS WE ENTERED HIS CAR.(for the life of me, i DON'T KNOW WHO'D DO SUCH A THING)
I heard abuser #2 got shot in an attempted robbery(or so it looked like).

The ACLU just recently published a form on the Internet for filing complaints against aggressive airport screening procedures. I filed one last week. Our family of four (birthright U.S. citizens), including our children ages 7 and 9, were told that we "fit the terrorist profile" recently for traveling on one-way tickets to be with my father during his last days of cancer. It would not have been possible to schedule round-trip flights, because no funeral date could be set while my father was still alive. The day after the funeral, we attempted to return home, and were given an ultimatum that our children would only be exempt from a body search only if we allowed airport personnel to take them, which of course we did not agree to. So all four of us were body searched in full public view, with no regard for the grief that we were still feeling from the funeral of the previous day.

I am very sorry for what many of you from abroad have experienced, and hope that this form will help to change things.

Even had he overstayed a past visit and even if his passport photo appeared to have been altered in some way, there is no excuse for the thuggery, intimidation, racism, and terroristic behavior to which he was subjected by people employed by and acting on behalf of the American public. If it was correct to deny him admission to the United States, he still should have been treated with courtesy, dignity, and respect.

It is possible to graduate at 20. My friend's dob is 12 June 1971, and he graduated with me in April 1992. Mine is 20th Mar 1971. We both are engineers with 4 years course starting in Aug 1988.

As you can see, on our graduation I was 21 years old, whereas my friend was about to celebrate his 21st birthday.

At graduation, my friend was running 21st year of his life and I was running 22nd.

Experiences like these, and the unpleasant atmosphere I experienced the last time I flew anywhere, have convinced me that the airlines can do without my business. Increasing numbers of friends feel the same way.

I feel badly for international business travelers who used to be welcomed and treated with consideration.

The "friendly skies" (if you even get that far) are far from friendly - or even comfortable - anymore.

It's obvious the airlines were in on 911 all the way. Where are all the airport gate videos of the hijackers anyway? Not to mention DMV videos when they all got drivers licenses. How about those put-options on airline stock just before 911? Where ARE those hijacked planes? Especially the one that supposedly hit the pentagon? No jumbo jet ever crashed there. Check the photos if you can still find them. Seeing is believing. Forget that feel-good crap on A&E, the airlines are gulity of co-operating with the perpetrators of the horror, FLATOUT! Cell phone calls from a jet? You CANNOT make a cell call from a cruising jet. Try it. Just look at the reception area strength graph on your cell phone as you take off. See it disappear! Nothing is more spook-related than the dear old airlines. Just ask Howard Hughes! Better to take the train or Greyhound if you can. I'm just going day by day as I'm going through this wonderful country today, thanking God for being alive as I am after serving this country as a US Marine soldier, 20 years ago. My father before me was an officer under General George S. Patten in North Africa and the rest of the conflict.
Well, after looking after quite a few million pages of websites of what our country is going through and what our leaders are doing to this country, why do I bother in being an American Citizen after all??? Why??? I did my salutes to Marine Officers, even a General! But God has given every single person the abiltity to think for himself and to make the right choices in life in this universe we live and unfortunately, well, there are a select few in high powers of office who would "think" otherwise to take away those freedoms of life we hold so dearly. But it makes us who we are! Where we go in this life! What we do in life! But I'll be "DARNED" if I'm going to continue being a private citizen and still have to kiss cheeks and say I'm an American when our leaders are doing their damnest to rid this country of every fiber in our beings and treat us like dogs the way those bastards treated people in those concentration camps in NAZI Germany. To be in a concentration camp I think is, we don't need fences to have them close us in, they already have them already, we just don't know about it. I would rather suffer the humiliation outside this country because I am a human being rather then to hold a "sign" in my forehead saying I'm an American, please kick my butt, the US Government gives you permission to do so at your discretion. I'll tell you what, if there are more atrocities in this country the next 4 years with the President we have now, let me shake my hand to you and say, "Asta Lavista, Baby". I had not heard of this incident before and the kind of treatment which some foreign visitors are receiving in this country at Customs offices at airports such as Los Angeles. This is indeed detestable treatment which is inexcusable, even if Riccardo may have overstayed his visa on a previous visit. This kind of treatment by Customs people of visitors is a "wonderful" way to create enemies and people who hate this country.

Can we think any less of the kind of treatment which the average American receives at security check points at the airports? The American gestapo in action. It's like the frog put in lukewarm water and gradually turn up the heat. By the time the frog realizes he's in a pot of boiling water, it's too late---he's cooked! It is a process of conditioning--getting Americans to give up their freedoms and submit to inspections and invasions of their privacy--all in the name of security. They had a Department of Homeland Security in Germany, too. What happened to the average German's "security" under Hitler?

We are moving rapidly toward fascism in this country. For some visitors like Riccardo, it is already here.

Americans should not take their freedom and liberty for granted. Benjamin Franklin's quote is very appropriate. Those who willingly give up their freedoms for security, deserve neither.

I hope you, Mr. Abude, will answer Rucker's accusations about your concealing your ability to speak English and about your passport photo having been altered, not that either accusation, even if true, excuses what happened to you.

Realistically, there was nothing else he could do but resort to the internet here. For those non-US citizens: Amen. Those of us who've learned and know of the abusive US government ...we are sorry. Not to mention the fraudulent wars and regime sabotage in Venezuela, Haiti, Ukraine, etc. Unfortunately, people like us are extremely outnumbered here. There is very little we can do.

Our vote's get switched by preprogrammed computers. Our protests are met by heavily armed storm-troopers, putting us in jail. Our letters to papers go ignored. Our websites, attacked. The internet is all we have now.

I used to fly with wife 8-10 times a year accompanying her to conferences. Now we drive, even if it's on the other coast. The best way to bring this nonsense to a halt is to vote with your wallet.

I hope Mr. Abude will also answer Lawman's accusations about overstaying on previous visas. How could these homeland security baboons at the airport get and keep track of that kind of information, which would normally be the job of whoever issues visas, and why, if indeed they did suspect you of overstaying previous visas, they didn't simply inform you rather than treating you as a potential terrorist?

The truth is that "homeland security" (and their supporters like "lawman",) is a criminal organization that makes up the rules as they go along. I'm very sad about this man's treatment at the airport. As a former wife of a Police officer in a big city, I can fairly well say that power does corrupt. The human animal seems very susceptible to the misuse of power. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. No doubt about it.


Some years ago I dreamed of traveling to Europe. I thought it would be a nice vacation. Now, after hearing all the terror stories about flying I don't want to fly again. I don't care if I never take another flying trip. I feel unsafe from all the horror stories I have read about rough security at airports. Forget it. Also, I don't want to be treated with hatred because I am American. I can't help that. I understand now if people hate Americans. I am sorry, but I have no control over the corporate/government aka USA INC. I don't even vote anymore. Why bother? Voting isn't legit.

I don't feel there is much hope for the future. Everything seems hopelessly corrupted. I can't imagine anything getting better here on earth. My whole life, since kindergarten, has been to be frightened with bomb drills (yes, I was suppose to be safe hiding under my desk) and movies like the
Day After and all the fear I've lived through such as the American/Cuba missle crisis & Vietnam war and watching young men die on the news while I tried to eat my dinner as a kid. Oh, shall I not forget watching the President Kennedy assassination as a small child at school on tv. How perfectly horrible.

I feel the old men (policy makers) of the past are still operating today. The same old group of geezers are still fleecing America. I let you, gentle reader, figure out which old group of geezers I'm referring to. My one wish is that the greedy owners of humanity would just go away. I don't care where they go; Hopefully they will go far away from humanity.

Okay, this is wishful thinking. But, I really do feel deeply for all the people of the world. I feel connected to the good men and women and the children. I feel connected to the family of man. In this sense of connectedness I feel a great sadness that all my earth years have been manipulated for some greedy profit by some controlling geezer group. Very sad.

I'd like to express my good will to the man who wrote the article. I think during these hostile times it would probably be best not to do business here. I don't think we have a business friendly climate. If you have to do business here, maybe you can send a representative that will be prepared for extensive screening procedures. Who would think in America you would have to present your 'papers' in order to travel?

I've noticed the older generation, the "me", generation seems to approve of what is going on in this country. Incredible. Maybe It is because what is happening right now with the eroding of freedoms is not directly affecting them. Maybe because the dying that is going on right now does not involve anyone of their family. I've notice that this aging "Me generation" group that supports the current policies are not very computer literate. They seem to get their only news from mainstream corporate television "car commercial" sponsored news. Could this be why they vote as they do? This supportative group of the political rulers have not paid a price yet. They have not paid a price for the costs of a financed war. But they will. We all will. Note: if you want to make a small protest, stop buying new cars.

The voting "ME" generation is not going to like it when they have less. And, they will lose in the end because after all it is just a "game" or a "job" to those who hurt us isn't it? This is a sick game of profit making, power brokering, racketeering, and endless fear. It isn't right. It isn't American. It isn't fair.

In the summer 2003, my tunisian daughters and I were travelling from Tunisia to my home country in Central America. While I had a fresh valid visa (10 years ahead), my daughters (14 and 12)were travelling under the "Transit without visa" modality, that they have already used in previous trips. As soon as we arrived to Migration, at Miami airport, they saw my daughters tunisian passports, and immediately sent the 3 of us to the famous office ...Reason? the fact of having a Tunisian passport!, no matter their young age (I'm married to a Tunisian citizen, but I keep my country's own passport and nationality). Of course, they didn't treat us kindly at all, and we spent there, documents and luggage confiscated, from 21 h to 3 am. We lost our connection flight and there were moments we thought they were going to send us back to Tunisia. For my daughters, who loved the idea to pass by USA, country of many of their music idols, like all the teenagers, this was a very disturbing and traumatic experience. They felt betrayed. They were simply innocents, as I was, too. The end of the ordeal arrived when an official female came and let us go free, without giving us any explanation. I must say in my case, the angel was the Iberia's agent at Miami airport, who conforted us during the 6 hours of "emprisonement". I must say I wasn't transfered to any jail or whatever, like the Brazilian citizen. But they never gave us food or anything. We were sleepy and tired, sitting in those horrible chairs for 6 hours, after the long trip Madrid-Miami, with other travelers (jordanians, palestinians, with babies and crying toddlers...).
A traumatic experience for someone who just had to make a stop over of 2 hours!
As a result of multiple cases like our, Iberia has moved the connection flights fron Miami to a latin american country.

I just read what happened to this passenger in U.S.A.
My son 18 (Irish) was stopped by these brainwashed humans at Chicago airport.
He was treated like a criminal and was questioned for hours.Being surrounded by armed chimps did not help at all.He was terrified.We did not know where he was,as no calls were allowed.He had nightmares for months after.When it came to returning he did not sleep for 5 nights before the trip.

4. Stop wearing designer/labelled garments.
5. Support the little old lady who sells her health products instead of buying branded goods. Visit the farm stall/market where you can buy from the farmer....set up a bloody co-op with the farmers and cut out the mainstream fat cats.
6. Switch your TV's off for a month. Make this permanent also.
7. Refuse, en-mass, to pay taxes. From my studies they are illegal anyway.
8. Watch Fahrenheit 9/11 again but this time absorb what is being said, even if the director is a fence sitting wimp looking for kudos from the wary.
9. Stop the draft before it starts. The government is supposed to be for the people, so stop your whining and get into some real action. You know the old saying, they came for the jew and I was silent because I wasn't one. They came for the catholic and I was silent because I wasn't one. I am a Mexican citizen that used to fly to the US on business about every month, I now refuse to, frankly because the INS officers scare the *hit out of me, I have valid papers to enter the US and get pulled aside for searches as soon as they see my mexican ID, one time they even took away my seat on the from of the plane and put me on the back right next to the turbine engines along with ten or fifteen other passegers with Gonzalez, Perez or any other last name you could think of that does not sound "america", I used to fly through Houston because it was cheaper to use a US carrier to fly from one border town to another border town in the US Mexico border, now I bite the bullet and pay the extra 150 bucks it costs me to fly on a mexican carrier, from a mexican airport to my final destination, my american based employer is having a fit but I just dont care plus I get free beer on all flights, the attendants are much nicer (average age is around 25 too!) and I help out my own economy.

I am not surprised to see a number of disrespectful comments regarding Mr. Da Silva's treatment by the INS. My advice to those making these comments is to mark my words, a change has come about in this country. Those of you who continue to delude yourselves by thinking that we live in a 'democracy' in the USA are sadly mistaken. Once again like 'Chicken Little' (there are plenty of those who would laugh about a situation as serious as this, however if it happened to them would scream and cry 'bloody murder'!) would laugh until a big chunk of the 'sky' fell onto their heads!

Harassment of people in airports is not necessary! I wish to commend the Dutch authorities at Schipol International Airport, Amsterdam, Netherlands; who have been watching and dealing with the possibility of acts of terrorism for some time, however have yet to the best of my knowledge been accused of harassment of visitors to their country. I was on a KLM flight from Vienna to Amsterdam nearly two months after September 11, 2001. I was to continue on to Seattle from Amsterdam on Northwest Airlines, however we learned there might be a glitch in our departure time. The agents and flight crew for the Northwestern flight remained very patient as every passenger was interviewed before being allowed to board the flight. After the interviews were complete, there was an apology given for any inconvenience and we were allowed to board. Not only did the authorities do what they felt was necessary, they efficiently got it done so the flight was not delayed in it's departure! NO ONE WAS MADE TO FEEL A CRIMINAL!!! It ended up with not only the authorities being satisfied, but also the crew and passengers were willing to cooperate to the fullest extent! Everyone was made to feel that an important goal had been accomplished, and we were all part of the same team!!

With the current political climate in the USA, this would never happen. Someone will be needlessly singled out to prove that HOMELAND SECURITY is on the job (just like in Steven Speilberg's THE TERMINAL!), even though their only crime is appearing to be different. A couple of months ago a teacher was arrested in a U.S. airport because a security person thought her bookmark was a weapon! She was grabbed and handcuffed right away even though the only weapon she carried was knowledge!! This is a very sad state of affairs. The USA needs to heal herself before she sticks her nose in any other national's business. Can she remedy herself before it is too late?

Of course government apologists have attempted to cover their tracks...( D.Rucker and Lawman) Their lies are very transparent, I too have experienced the rotten fascist underbelly of the Amerikan state- and now all the phoney Christians have united with the fascist element we are all in trouble.
