Photographs of the Democracy Is Dying Gathering

Saturday afternoon, November 20, 2004, citizens disgusted with the U.S. election system gathered in downtown Portland to voice this discontent. People then deposited letters the Oregonian in a voters box to further protest lack of general media coverage of a growing body of voter fraud throughout the country
At Northwest Park and Jefferson, people listened to music and waited for a funeral procession to march up from downtown. When this procession arrived, with painted white faces and a somber tones, a moment of silence was announced by the ringing of a Buddhist gong, whereby the people lined up and deposited previously prepared letters to the Oregonian addressing the lack of coverage of what should be the story of the century, rampant voter fraud and voter disenfranchisement which took place in the recent 2004 national election.
After several people spoke, a few of the organizers as well as some of those who were there in support, the gathering marched down to the Oregonian offices. Here amongst chants voicing their disapproval and outrage at Corporate Media cowardice, the letters were counted before being turned over to the Oregonian. The total was 96 letters.
The march, one of many more to come was organized by Actions Speak PortlandClean Vote.

Opponents of the technology gather at the Capitol and question exit-

Sunday, November 21, 2004 -

About 200 protesters and curious onlookers stood at the steps of the
state Capitol on Saturday, with protesters toting signs that
read "the
machine ate my vote" and "paper ballots protect democracy."

Organizers said the presidential election results are tainted because
electronic voting machines in parts of the country were inaccurate or
biased.

"There's no reason that any reasonable person should have any
confidence in this election," said Alan Gilbert, a political science
professor at the University of Denver. "We voted on machines that
were
provided by a private company and were not subject to public review.
This is a very, very serious thing."

Opponents of the technology gather at the Capitol and question exit-poll data

Patrick Bennett, of Westminster, holds a sign expressing his concern over electronic voting during a rally at the Capitol on Saturday. Bennett, who works in the computer industry, says he sees no need for computer voting when the process can be done by hand in a verifiable way.

About 200 protesters and curious onlookers stood at the steps of the state Capitol on Saturday, with protesters toting signs that read "the machine ate my vote" and "paper ballots protect democracy."

Organizers said the presidential election results are tainted because electronic voting machines in parts of the country were inaccurate or biased.

"There's no reason that any reasonable person should have any confidence in this election," said Alan Gilbert, a political science professor at the University of Denver. "We voted on machines that were provided by a private company and were not subject to public review. This is a very, very serious thing."

The electronic voting machines, used by about one-third of Americans this year, don't leave a paper trail that can be accounted for. That could have made the difference during this year's election for Democratic candidate Sen. John Kerry, said Gilbert, who said he once taught secretary of state nominee Condoleezza Rice.

President Bush's margin of victory was roughly 3.5 million votes.

In addition to protesting the new voting technology, the group said exit-poll data was off as much as six points from the official results in swing states, which could be a signal of voter fraud.

"Exit-poll data has never been inaccurate in the U.S.," Gilbert said. "This is a new level of unfairness in American elections."

Mark Blumenthal, a nationally recognized political pollster who created www.mysterypollster.com , urged patience on his website Friday for those criticizing early exit-poll data.

"We have not yet seen any empirical evidence in the exit polls to prove the existence of vote fraud, nor any evidence that the exit-poll discrepancy can be explained by any such fraud," Blumenthal said.

Matt Bennett, a 29-year-old Denver resident, said he went to the rally because he didn't trust the electronic systems used in this years general election.

"There are some questionable results that came out of this election," Bennett said. "A lot of questions about the system aren't being asked."

Craig Smith of Action Speaks

Improbability of the November 2 Election Irregularities Arising by Chance: A Study
On November 2nd, the American people were defrauded of their vote -- the very expression of their sovereignty -- by a despicable act of theft. O.K., easy for you to say, someone might object, but where's the proof? The proof is in the radical deviation between the exit polling data and the vote tallies in various states. For anyone with common sense -- which these incompetent thugs were incapable of robbing -- quite frankly, because they've got despicably little of it (utter morons, to be quite honest) -- the possibility that there was NO election fraud belongs to the realm of fantasy. What the media are calling a conspiracy theory is a CONSPIRACY REALITY: THE NEOCONSERVATIVE PIRACY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE'S VOTE -- THEREFORE, ITS SOVEREIGNTY.

A current UC Berkeley study "shows an unexplained discrepancy between votes for President Bush in counties where electronic voting machines were used versus counties using traditional voting methods. Discrepancies this large or larger rarely arise by chance - the probability is less than 0.1 percent":  http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=109&STORY=/www/story/11-18-2004/0002462583&EDATE
That corresponds pretty much exactly with what Steven Freeman claims in his article at the University of Pennsylvania:  http://www.buzzflash.com/alerts/04/11/The_unexplained_exit_poll_discrepancy_v00k.pdf
Others are slightly more conservative in their estimates. As Bill Simpich observes in the laudable SF Bay View (which has finally come out, like IndyMedia, to protest "Votergate" - the filthiest, most vile, and pathetically ill-conceived caper of the Third Millenium: "Former MIT mathematics professor David Anick ( www@bluelemur.org, Nov. 8) has found the odds of Bush making an average gain of 4.15 percent among all 16 states included in the media's 4 p.m. exit polling is 1 in 50,000, or .002 percent."
Are these irregularities new, however, or have they not been going on already now for quite some time?

A similar occurrence of improbable irregularities has already occurred in Texas: "November 2002, Comal County, Texas - A Texas-sized lack of curiosity about discrepancies: The uncanny coincidence of three winning Republican candidates in a row tallying up exactly 18,181 votes each was called weird, but apparently no one thought it was weird enough to audit. Conversion to alphabet: 18181 18181 18181 ahaha ahaha ahaha":  http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article4031.htm
The patent binomial pattern in these results appears to reveal their source in computer code. What would the probability be of all three results occurring in the same state during the same election?

Given the certainty that Diebold has been rigging American elections in the past, the extreme likelihood that election fraud occurred on November 2nd becomes an absolute certainty. Indymedia is therefore to be complimented for its seminal valiance in reporting what the rest of the media are attempting to cover up. Indymedia is a friend of the people in their effort to restore the conditions of independence upon which this country was first founded. Indymedia represents the true America. Until the rest of the media follow the lead of such valiant champions of the people as Indymedia and the SF Bay View, the cravenly unresponsive rest of the media are to be held in contempt by the sovereign American people.

Join us at Action Speaks in our intensely urgent struggle to restore the defrauded American people to its rightful, very American position of sovereignty. We beat the forces of tyrannical oppression at the founding of the American Republic. Today, the American people's independent resolve is being put to the greatest test it has ever faced. This is the most meaningful struggle the American people have had to engage in since the drafting of the Declaration of Independence. To make our struggle more meaningful, we need your support. We need the support of the American people united in a solid body -- steeled in their resolve not be enslaved to a cowardly band of utterly incompetent petty villains:

Hey Morons: American Democracy is not Dying 22.Nov.2004 03:57

Black Panther Party

Because American Democracy was DEAD ON ARRIVAL 200 years ago.

That picture of the tombstone with the "RIP Democracy 1776-2004" message is hilariously stupid--even for an American.

You would think that this idiot would remember that the BUSH REGIME STOLE THE 2000 election 4 years ago. I guess American "Democracy" didn't die then.

Or, remember that for most of the American history, people of color and white women DIDN'T HAVE YOUR PRECIOUS LITTLE VOTE.

This protest shows why White Liberals, and Pro-American "patriots" cannot be allowed to coopt and manipulate the Election Fraud issue, or any other issue (like the antiwar movement) for that matter.

They will instinctively posture and pose as dissidents, ALL IN ORDER TO COVER UP THE MORE FUNDAMENTAL TRUTHS. That is true of the 9-11 issue, the War on Terrrorism, or America's Lies about WMDs.

Deep down, these Pro-Americans believe in the LIE of America itself, much like a religious fanatic clings to his belief in God or his religion.

In this case, AMERICA IS THEIR GOD. AMERICA IS INTRINSICALLY GOOD. America is a shining Beacon of Democracy and Freedom (TM). Laughable bullshit...

For all you bumper sticking loving "progressives" remember this bumper sticker phrase:
"Democracy, Nothing But Disguised Hypocrisy."

This is a quote from Malcolm X's famous "The Ballot or the Bullet" speech. Read it, and educate yourself.

"No, I'm not an American. I'm one of the 22 million black people who are the victims of Americanism. One of the 22 million black people who are the victims of democracy, nothing but disguised hypocrisy. So, I'm not standing here speaking to you as an American, or a patriot, or a flag-saluter, or a flag-waver -- no, not I. I'm speaking as a victim of this American system. And I see America through the eyes of the victim. I don't see any American dream; I see an American nightmare."

Last Commentator: Once Deprived of Our Own Freedom, We Hear You! 22.Nov.2004 08:03

Craig Smith of ActionSpeaks, Portland

The Protest of the Oregonian on November 19th was an instrumental precursor to ActionSpeaks' symbolic event: "Democracy is Dying" on the following day. KBOO erroneously said today that our protest, like the commentator above, was about how "Democracy died." It's not true. It is true that the present illegitimate regime -- illegitimate because they tried to steal the election (that's my opinion, not that of ActionSpeaks) -- is an arch enemy of freedom and a racist oppressor of the people of the world. What could have been more racistly reckless than shifting the so-called "War on Terror" from one Islamic fundamentalist country (Afghanistan) to another secular Islamic country that had absolutely no affiliation with Al Quaida -- because Al Quaida's fundamentalism threatened its secularism? The fact is that the world -- people of all colors, creeds, sexual orientations, genders, and capabilities are awakening to the fact that for true freedom to exist, freedom for everyone has to be our foremost concern. The idea of bringing democracy to the world by bombing the living hell out of its citizenry -- women and children alike -- is not only immoral, cowardly, cruel, and viciously unconscionable, it is downright stupid. Its the best way to breed enemies. The US's use of air strikes to bomb Vietnamese villages into submission during Vietnam had the same effect. After we killed over 1.5 million Vietnamese citizens, we soon saw that we'd created an enemy of our greatest ally in that struggle we retreated with our tails between our legs from Saigon. The present conduct of the war in Iraq is pursuing the exact same strategy with far graver and deleterious consequences. If things continue as they are now, not only will we be chased in terror out of Iraq, we'll be pursued back home by attacks for centuries to come. When Bush said, "Bring 'em on Home," he might as well have been speaking to Al Quaida, because that's who'll be following us home if we don't start taking account of the fact that we need to respect the rights of the people not only in this country, but also in the rest of the world. By supporting oppressive regimes and making outright warfare on civilian populations, we isolate our own most important ally -- the people of the world -- in the people of the world's struggle for sovereignty. Through recognition of this fact and taking up its cause, democracy is awakening. Democracy is alive in the rest of the world -- it is true that it is in many cases being stomped upon by the oppressive boot of tyrannical overlordship -- but democracy will awaken once people realize that people everywhere just want to be free and start doing something about it through refusal to carry on using the same old failed worn-out formulas for getting things done the easy way. This is a difficult struggle, but we can do it. Not surprisingly, it is the largely black-operated San Francisco Bay View that is coming out in protest against the election. Subjection to oppression breeds deeper awareness of its presence. We've got to open our ears to our black allies in the struggle for bringing sovereignty to all people of all kinds. While this might just be a return of whitie to his (and her) freeedom, that freedom can no longer be founded on race-based notions of privelege. True freedom means freedom not at the expense of others' freedom. True freedom means for the universal benefit of humankind.

My protest signs. The so-called "conspiracy theory" of election irregularities is swiftly becoming known as "Votergate."
See:  http://www.votergate.tv/

It is a conspiracy reality -- the reality of the Neoconservative Election Piracy 2004. With the united effort of the people of the world, that act of Piracy will be discovered, condemned, and thwarted. But the forces of oppression are powerful. Just look at the press. Very few are yet reporting on this. The people needs to demonstrate its power in this struggle to get the press to come out and protect the people's rights. In this struggle, we may very well need the help not only of all American people, but also that of those of the rest of the citizens of the world as well. (OK, so I spelled "Weather" wrong. But I only had an hour left to do the entire side of that sign. And I wrote an "H" in on the following day anyway.)

Protest against the Oregonian 22.Nov.2004 08:33

Craig Smith of ActionSpeaks, Portland

Protesters met at 5:00 on Friday, November 19, to protest the Oregonian's refusal (like almost all of the rest of the corporate media) to report the truth concerning the greatest crime of the Third Milennium: "Votergate" -- the theft of the American people's sovereign right and sacred voting rite -- a morally depraved, unchristianly, absolutely irreligious, despicable, and unprecedentedly pathetic attempt to swipe the American people's most sacredly held right. I was so caught up in the protest (there must have been over 100 there) that I forgot to take my camera out until there were just a few of us left chatting and waving to supporters of our protest outside the building. The response of the Portland citizenry was generally positive. Yes, American democracy is awakening to its coming birth and rebirth. Hopefully we'll do it better next time around.

ActionSpeaks Meets in the Park Blocks on Saturday, Nov. 20th 22.Nov.2004 09:26

Craig Smith of ActionSpeaks, Portland

Members of the sovereign American people, incensed by the very evident indications of election fraud in the last election, met in the Park blocks in Portland on November 20th, 2004 to mourn the deplorable state of democracy in the US today, talk with eachother, and sing songs of protest. Again, the American people's praise goes out to Indymedia for giving voice to this, their most important struggle against a vicious attack against their most sacrosanct institution -- the act of choosing good leaders to both lead it and set an example by their conduct. Perhaps the most horrible aspect of the present state of affairs is the message the "Votergate" scandal sends to our children. If someone is allowed to steal an election, or someone is allowed to steal the American people's vote for someone else (we do not yet know who was chiefly responsible, so we have to be careful about whom we accuse), then what sort of example does this set for our children? Isn't it a bit like saying: "Your true values don't really matter. If you can say you have values while lying and cheating to gain the most personal advantage for yourself, then you have done well in life." What sort of deeply corrupt individuals these are. Without being completely unenlightened and corrupt, who would want a part of such a life? Is there any true gratification in such gains that are so unworthy of praise that any praise necessarily becomes a lie as well? George Bush's accomplishments? None whatsoever. His legacy is a long string of disasters, and I think it's quite evident why. His is a message of absolute spiritual and moral bankruptcy. Quite unsurprisingly, his economic policy is having the same bankrupting effect on the US economy, plunging it into deeper crisis than those of Brazil and Argentina, as one economic commentator has recently said (a week ago last Friday on Bill Moyers). All the comments stated here are purely my own. They have nothing to do with the vehemently non-partisan attitude of ActionSpeaks. I share that attitude, but I believe that for the morally conscientious members of the Republican party - and on the whole, I think they are morally good people with good intentions, they had better wake up to the fact of just with whom they have been sharing their bed. Claims of moral values cannot hide the fundamentally pervasive poison of absolute moral depravity that infects many of the chief figureheads in their party. There is corruption in the Democratic party also. To maintain their integrity, all American people need to join in the conscientious effort of the true American people in restoring itself to its sovereignty and a position of true moral values - a set of moral values that benefits all participants in the process. Rather than attempting to gain the most for ourselves, we need to think of our fellow human beings. Together, we may all benefit. "Ask not what your country can do for you," said J.F.K., "ask what you can do for your country." He might also have added: "Ask not what your countrymen and -women can do for you. Ask what you can do for your fellow countrymen and -women, for your fellow human being, for the other citizens of a free, democratic world - for the very salvation of the human race!" Please join us at ActionSpeaks by attending our meeting in the Old Church (at the corner of SW Clay and 11th) Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004 between 7:00 and 9:00 pm. We would really enjoy your presence!

The Mourning Procession, "Democracy is dying," arrives in the park blocks carrying a casket in which those gathered lay their letters to the editor of the Oregonian. Why has the Oregonian -- like most of the rest of the corporately controlled media -- failed to do its job? The theft of a people's sovereignty is the most grievous act of terrorism you can carry out upon it -- again, that is my opinion alone.

The Votes (Letters to the Editor) are Cast (or Laid to Rest) 22.Nov.2004 10:35

Craig Smith

I think almost everyone present at that gathering of about 100 people had with them a letter to the editor of the Oregonian asking why that once respected paper had cravenly retreated behind a wall of public rectitude (to quote a well known authority on the subject) to betray the American people of its right to be told the truth. If corporate America is responsible for the intimidation, then the media are equally responsible for allowing themselves to be intimidated. To my mind, sheer greed drives their morally reprehensible failure to stand up and do their job. It is the same greed that will prove their downgoing. True news is valuable -- more valuable today than ever before. These shallow rags with their untruths -- their nonreporting on nonevents -- who needs them? The American people is now using the internet to educate itself. Nosce te ipsum, "know thyself," says the Delphic oracle. ActionSpeaks motto is "Educate yourself!" More and more Americans today are turning to Indymedia, to KOIN TV in Portland, and to the San Francisco Bay View for the coverage of the greatest crime of the Third Millenium: "Votergate": the theft of the American people's sovereign vote.

The People Speak 22.Nov.2004 11:11

With Elizabeth of "Code Pink" acting as Master of Ceremonies, various members of this emergency gathering of concerned American citizens gave voice to their grievances. One was reminded of the first meetings of the Constitutional Congress prior to the outbreak of the American Revolution. Defrauded of its right to self-determination by a selfish act of betrayal, the American people has been returned to that original stage in its history -- the time when it felt itself called upon to assert its independence against outside aggression. The problem now, however, is that the aggressors are internally inveterate forces of corporate corruption. (These views are solely my own.) United, the American people and the citizens of the world will prevail in their united struggle for world peace, justice, democracy, respect of human rights, and the right of all people to self-determination. We have a long and treacherous journey ahead of us. On November 19th and 20th, the journey was begun in Portland through the efforts of "The Portland Peaceful Response Coalition," CleanVote, and ActionSpeaks. On Friday, KBOO reported: "The Portland Peaceful Response Coalition is protesting civilian casualties in Iraq and Republican attempts to steal the election
at home. They are rallying in Pioneer Square at this hour." They protested against civilian and prisoner murders in Iraq (war crimes).

Our efforts are paying off. Between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, KBOO (90.7 FM) took calls from listeners concerning the widespread reports of election fraud from across the US. Elizabeth, Wilson, and Johnny of ActionSpeaks fielded the questions. The people are educating themselves. The barrier of silence is breaking down. Air America (620 AM) consistently addresses the allegations of voting fraud -- the conspiracy theory turned conspiracy reality -- Neocon Election Piracy 2004. AM 910 has also given mention to our efforts. KOIN TV in Portland is the real "News Channel." It reported on our symbolic protest on November 20th. Accolades again to Indymedia and the San Francisco Bay View for the courage and determination in standing up to the silent gag order that threatens the pursuit of truth and justice in the American people's struggle to recapture its stolen sovereignty.

Elizabeth Atley of Code Pink moderated. The people voiced their grievances against a system that deprives both the participants in the electoral process and the elected officials it produces of all respect. If the people that win the election are not the people we voted for, how can they possibly hope to command our respect? If moral values supposedly played such a large role in motivating voters to get out to vote, they were fiercely trampled underfoot by the modernly invented voting apparatus of Diebold, ESS, and Sequoia. In Venezuela, Mexico, and the homeland of Slobodan Milosewich - that's right also in Serbia - they have unified voting systems. Working for the OSCE, Polish observer Konrad Olszewski explained to the International Herald Tribune that the e-voting system in Venezuela had better protections against failures and errors than the computers used in Florida. "To be honest, monitoring elections in Serbia a few months ago was much simpler," he said, than monitoring the US' elections:
 http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,1564,1386897,00.html
Nigeria will soon also have a unified voting system. When will it be our turn? It would be easy to implement one if we just admitted that it needed to be done. The Mafia has controlled elections from the left, some critics say. Now Diebold, Sequoia, and ESS are trying to control them from the right. Let's get an election system that we can trust and believe in. Wouldn't that be a lot cheaper than all the wasted energy that has gone into this entire "Votergate" scandal already - the scandal that is certain now to hamstring the government and prove it incapable of performing its designated function? When it comes to its handling of the most important formative process in the smooth running of its house, the United States is in Third World status even with regard to many other comparably underdeveloped countries. Is it any wonder that corruption has become so widespread? The illness infecting American politics is systemic. The American people and its elected officials need to band together to cooperatively overcome this pandemic through the implementation of a unified, accountable voting process that produces votes that you can tangibly count. If you can't count the votes, the votes don't really count.

The people of Portland, Oregon carried down to the Oregonian's headquarters the casket containing their letters of grievance against the Oregonian for dereliction of duty - for nonreporting on nonevents at a moment in history when candid reporting is of the very highest order. Will their grievances be heard? Or will the Oregonian continue to carry out its silently assumed function of acting as a dead letter office for everyone who has submitted Op-Ed pieces, Letters to the Editor, and Questions concerning both election fraud and the government's handling of the war in Iraq? The crowd of participants in ActionSpeaks' event chanted "Print the News," "Tell Us the Truth," "Tell Us the News," and other slogans. Then they counted out loud as all 96 Letters to the Editor of the Oregonian were submitted for consideration.

The Oregonian's cowardly submission to the silent gag order on its reporting is counteracted by the valiant KBOO, which covered 3 ActionSpeaks members' excellent fielding of callers' questions concerning voter fraud from 7:30 to 9:00 AM today, Monday, Nov. 22, 2004. Elizabeth Atly of Code Pink, Johnny Marie, and Wilson Leong were the guests. Disgruntled Republicans, Democrats, and others aired their grievances against an electoral system that the members of either side seem to abusively utilize to their own particular advantage. Throughout the discussion, all three members of ActionSpeaks did an excellent job of keeping the discussion nonpartisan. The discussion revealed quite clearly that the root problem lies neither on the right nor on the left, but that the problem is systemic (or "systematic," if you will). Air America (620 AM) and Max (910 AM) have also reported on ActionSpeaks' attempt to confront the issue of voting fraud. KOIN TV in Portland is to be lauded for its reporting on ActionSpeaks' symbolic event on Saturday. Again, Indymedia and the San Francisco Bay View also deserve the people's praise for their valiant defense of their cause and courageous challenge to the media-wide gag order that is at this very moment showing signs of inevitable rupture! The truth is coming out on "Votergate" - the greatest scandal of the Third Millenium!

And The Walls Came a Tumblin' Down 22.Nov.2004 14:05

Craig Smith

After symbolically counting out their letter submissions in symbolic demonstration of the fundamental rule that all votes must be counted for an election to be considered valid, the people of Portland gave forth a united, earth-shattering cry of rage against the wall of silence that stood before them. Is was if the Israelites were attempting to shout down the legendary wall of Jericho. At that point the people circled the building to which it symbolically laid seige, catapulting their plaintively charged invectives of truly American righteous indignation at the slavish dependence on an unspoken gag order of the media networks in this country -- in short, at their demonstration of despicably unpardonable un-American behavior. The spirit of American freedom cringes in disgust at such greed-driven obsequious kowtowing to a corporate culture inimical to human rights, mutual human respect, and common sense. Theirs is a culture of senseless cowardice, terror, and barbaric manners. I believe that on that day, Nov. 20th, 2004, the walls of the Oregonian were beginning to crack. The sovereign people of Portland may have their daily life considerations to think of, but they seem for the most part supportive of the efforts being made by their brothers and sisters at ActionSpeaks and CleanVote.

The ranks of ActionSpeaks swelled from 55 to 77 over just two meetings. Rising on a groundswell of universal public opinion, a new movement is spreading like wildfire throughout the land. And ActionSpeaks is instrumental in that trend. The corporate media have punished the American people long enough with their deceit and lack of probity. For true reporting on true issues, the American people are turning increasingly to KBOO, Air America, Max 910 "For Guys," KOIN TV, Indymedia, the San Francisco Bay View, and their new partner in arms: "ActionSpeaks." The next meeting of ActionSpeaks promises to be encharged with unprecedented vitality. As the news of "Votergate" begins to break, activity at ActionSpeaks is literally going right through the roof! Join us at the historic Old Church on the corner of SW 11th and Clay on Tuesday, November 23rd, between 7 and 9 p.m.
