Portland animal rights activists gathered outside the home of Dr.Martha Neuringer, one of OHSU's vivisectors, to call an end to Martha's cruel and unnecessary experiments.

Activists arrived early Sunday morning with a bullhorn to wake Dr.Neuringer from her sleep and to remind her of the many monkeys she torures and kills in her cruel, lethal and unnecessary experiments.

They gathered outside her fenced in home with some signs saying, "Deprive Mad Martha Neuringer Of Her Federal Funding", "Your Taxes Buy Terror", and "Animal Research Kills People". Since Martha lives out in the boonies (Glendale), activists were not sure if her neighbors could hear their voices yelling the truths about what Martha does for a living. Not until a couple drove by in their truck to tell the activists they were being too loud. Activists continued to chant, "Stop the Torture, Stop the Pain, Martha Neuringer is to Blame", "Martha Neuringer, YOUR SICK!" and "Vivisection is a lie, HOW MANY ANIMALS HAVE TO DIE?"

Flyers with information on the useless inhumane experiments Martha does, were distributed a couple weeks earlier around the neighborhood to let the neighbors know that an animal abuser who is funded by their tax dollars lives in their area. As the activists drove out of the neighborhood, they continued to chant using their loud voices and a bullhorn "We'll Be Back!" The activists then decided to flyer around Martha and her husbands apartment in SE Portland.

For the past 19 years, Martha Neuringer, a researcher with Oregon Health Sciences University, has been terrorizing and killing infant rhesus monkeys in nutritional deprivation experiments at the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center in Beaverton, Oregon.

Dr. Neuringer adamantly denies that she treats her monkeys in a "cruel or cavalier" manner. However, she herself has described the infants in her experiments as suffering from severe emotional and psychological stress, as well as prolonged diarrhea, before she eventually kills them to examine their eves and brains.

Neringer forcibly removes the infant monkeys form their mothers on the day they are born to house them alone in steel cages. Because rhesus monkeys are among the most social of all primates, the price in terror and suffering to these babies and their mothers is impossible to overstate.

The mothers grieve for the loss of their babies for days. The infants' stress, terror and depression are manifested in constant rocking swaying: continued clutching at themselves: and self-mutilation.

To compound the abuse, Dr. Neuringer drills holes into the skulls of some of the babies to remove pieces of their brains. They endure painful recovery from these brain surgeries as many as four times before they are killed at or before 3 years of age.

Neuringer attempts to justify her cruel experiments by proposing to answer what describes as a "remaining critical question": Do human babies really need the preformed long-chain fatty acids present in human breast milk?

Based on these recommendations, European and Japanese companies have already started adding these long-chain fatty acids to their infant formulas.

In 1991-three years before proposing to abuse more monkeys at taxpayer expense-Neuringer herself wrote, "Ideally, the fat content and fatty acid composition of infant formulas should resemble human milk. This objective seems reasonable and technologically feasible."

Dr. Neuringer's fatty acid experiments are consistent with her long history of isolating and killing infant monkeys to confirm already-known nutritional effects. This can clearly be seen in her earlier taurine deprivation "research."

In 1984, formula manufacturers began adding taurine to their products. In 1987, Neuringer herself confirmed, "Taurine supplementation of most commercial infant formulas was instituted in 1984 or 1985." Yet, even after making this statement, Neuringer proceeded to torment and kill at least 60 baby monkeys to "further strengthen the case" for feeding infants taurine a case that had already been made.

In 1993-nine years after companies began adding taurine to their infant formulas-Neuringer, after describing an experiment in which she had killed 25 baby monkeys, actually wrote that"[I]t remains prudent to supplement human infant formula with taurine levels matching those of human milk."

And Dr. Neuringer just can't understand why reasonable people object.

"I have seen many heartbreaking incidents of cruelty during my ten years of veterinary practice, but few compare to the suffering imposed by Martha Neuringer's experimentation of these innocent, defenseless babies."
--Sherri Speede, DVM

"Dr. Neuringer's current research requires infant monkeys to consume diets that are deficient in fatty acids to prove a point that is already well understood by experts in pediatric nutrition. To demonstrate a fact in an animal model that is already established by human clinical data can only be seen as self-aggrandizing, avaricious attempt to procure grant funds."
--Ken Stoller, M.D., FAAP Pediatrician

"Dr. Neuringer's research involving feeding a deficient diet to infant monkeys will only demonstrate what is already known, or will reach inappropriate conclusions about human brain function based on data collected from animals kept under unnatural, deprived laboratory conditions. It is an example of how to waste our valuable tax dollars."
--Robert A. Greenberg, M.D., MSPN, FAAP Pediatrician

WE'LL BE BACK!!!!! 17.Nov.2004 16:08

beagle: thank you for yet another wonderful and informative posting. i always look forward to reading the articles you put up on this site. it sounds like a good time was had by all, except for a few neighbors and perhaps martha and alan. what a nice secluded home she has. wonder if any elves ever lurk about in the surrounding woods. oh and just for the record, mr. and mrs. neuringer live in the little town of glenwood, not glendale. are there any plans to do any christmas caroling in her area in the near future? we know when they are sleeping.we know when their away ..........

Info Wanted 18.Nov.2004 16:17

Oh you know who I am

Can anyone provide me with the name of the OHSU Public Safety Assicer who drives a red Jeep (SUV style)with Oregon plates ZSR 226? Would REALLY like to know who this incognito character is. He should probably be considered armed and dangerous, like the rest of them.

From the Office of the Chief 20.Nov.2004 07:35

Dear Oh You Know Who I Am,
I am presently unaware of which OHSU undercover officer drives a red Jeep, plate number ZSR 226. I will look into the matter and get back with you.

Would like to go but 22.Nov.2004 16:45

don't hear about them beforehand

How does someone find out when these home protests are going to happen?Do just select activists get to know and go?

Anonymous State Worker annie97267@yahoo.com

The license plate number you mentioned is registered to the state as an official use vehicle and is publically owned. I think that police depts and the feds have access to use it for surveilance.

Question for Anonymous State Worker 30.Nov.2004 11:33

An Interested Party

Are you certain of this information?I was under the impression that government/publicly owned vehicles were identified by special plates. Why would such a car be used for OHSU purposes?Do you have any additional details to share?Thank you for the heads up.

RE: Question for Anonymous State Worker 01.Dec.2004 12:21

Anonymous State Worker

The registration lists no information for this vehicle. This is common for vehicles that are state owned and are used by law enforcement for their purposes. By special plates I assume you mean they say "publically owned" on them? Federal agencies and police departments often use license plates that appear as ordinary plates so they are not obvious. I believe, based on the coding for this plate, that this car falls into that category. Obviously, the government can do whatever it wants to register or not register license plates or manipulate them to deceive us. I only wish that I could make up my own rules like uncle sam does. I can only guess why ohsu might use such a car. Who knows?
