In Washington state new benchmarks will soon be released for preschoolers. The Washington State Early Learning and Development Benchmarks have many early childhood professionals concerned.

The problem in early care and education is not benchmarks, but how benchmarks are being presented and how they will be used. Early childhood professionals already have access to off-the-shelf benchmarks, so there is little need for Washington to be developing new standards now. There is even less need to celebrate the state's new standards, especially since the standards are part of a larger testing agenda brought on by the federal government. What is needed is a commitment to fully funding early care and education for all Washington's children, including paying professional wages (instead of poverty-wages) to attract and retain quality teachers for Washington's children.
