Family members of a Vancouver man believed to have been shot in Chechnay earlier this month say they are still uncertain their relative is the one who was killed, even after seeing a photo sent by Russian authorities.

The RCMP now plans to use fingerprints to finally solve the mystery.

The family of Rudwan Khalil Abubaker was shown a photoi of the dead man by he RCMP Monday, but was unable to make a positive identification.

"Some people are reasonably sure it's him, but the mother and brother just are not," family lawyer Phil Rankin said Monday. He added that the man the man in the picture looks different than Abubaker when he left Vancouver to meet his father in Saudi Arabia.

"The hair is, of course, completely different from when he was living in Vancouver, [as is] the beard, so he looks somewhat different," Rankin said, adding the body was also quite bloated, meaning the man appears significantly bigger than Abubaker's slim frame.

Rankin said the discrepancies could be explained by Abubaker's apparent fatal injuries and his time overseas, but that the family wants to know for certain before it accepts the 26-year-old is dead. "They're reluctant to make a positive identification, even though it is a similar-looking person, because [Abubaker] has telltale birthmark [on his forehead], which is missing from the picture," Rankin said.

He added, however, that the photo was "faint" and the birthmark might not be visible.

To confirm the identity of the body, an RCMP team will dust Abubaker 's room and possessions for a usable fingerprint and then compare it to the prints sent by Russian authorities.

Abubaker left Vancouver in late June or early July with his friend Kamal Elbahja of Maple Ridge. Russian authories say they shot Abubaker in an antiterrorist raid in Chechnya and then buried his body. Elbahja has also gone missing, as has Azer Tagiev, a Vancouver -based businessmen to whose wedding Abubaker is believed have been traveling when he was alledgedly shot.

Putting Putin on the Spot

Having promised stability for Russia, if not full democracy, since becoming president five years ago, Vladimir Putin has lately come up short on both..... Putin is asking the UN Security Council to endorse his claim that Al Qaeda is involved with the nationalist cause of Chechnya terrorists. Evidence is slim to support that claim..... Putin's increasingly despotic ways in both ruling Russia and ignoring Chechnya's interests do not deserve foreign support. But he can be more vigorously urged to change his ways.

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AP) -- Forensic experts have exhumed 249 bodies from a mass grave in northeastern Bosnia containing victims of the country's devastating 1992-95 war, an official said Thursday. Based on the documents and other evidence found on the bodies, most of the dead appeared to be Bosnian Muslims killed in the 1995 massacre in nearby Srebrenica, the worst massacre of civilians in Europe since the Second World War, he said.

ELECTIONS: FINAL OBSCENITY OF RUSSIAN GENOCIDE

What do Kashmir, Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine and Chechnia have in common? In each case the occupying power used overwhelming force to crush the resistance, terrorize the people, destroy mosques and imprison the political opposition. Then, step two, the occupier uses funding to organize collaborators, traitors, agents and non-Muslim groups to organize "elections" and set up a "democracy."
