The Grand Coup of 11 September: Whole World Knows More than American Corp.Media

Friends,

After seven months, Washington has yet to present one shred
of evidence to support its fanciful story regarding the
events of 9/11. Instead, every piece of direct evidence
that comes to light suggests Washington itself as being the
perpetrator. And they were always the primary suspect, as
they are the only ones who have gained from the event. The
article below reviews this evidence, bringing in
considerable new material that I haven't seen before. It
covers a broader canvas than Michael Ruppert's revelations,
and has perhaps a stronger ring of credibility. You might
find this article worth sharing with others.

In matrix reality, Bin Laden made War On America - and since
then "fighting terrorism" has been the overriding motive
behind every US action. It's an easy story for people to
follow, as it parallels the script of typical Hollywood
action thrillers. And fiction it is... designed to
distract, like the white gloves of a magician. Meanwhile,
the real action proceeds off camera.

911 was a grand coup. In a minor coup, some General takes
over the government of a single country. In a Grand Coup
the entire world order is transformed. The whole
Enlightenment heritage has been abandoned: constitutional
government, civil liberties, balance of powers, government
accountability. International law has been abandoned, and
national sovereignty is becoming a subject for nostalgia
buffs. Police state legislation has been passed not just in
the USA, the alleged target of "terrorism", but throughout
the West, in the so-called "modern democracies". In the EU,
the official definition of "terrorism" now includes any
civil disobedience whose objective is to "change the
economic system".

This was a Global Grand Coup, with historic significance on
a par with the fall of Rome, the Industrial Revolution, or
the birth of Christianity. It marks the beginning of a new
Era, what right-wingers call The New World Order. In some
sense, we are simply seeing capitalism finally forced to
show its true face. In another sense, which amounts to the
same thing, we are seeing Hitler's vision of a Thousand Year
Reich being finally realized by the same crowd that funded
fascism in the first place.

Perhaps my words seem a bit extreme. If so, that's because
we are so far only seeing the establishment of new
infrastructures, and the propagation of new mythologies. It
won't become obvious where this is all leading until it's
too late. And then most of us will be persuaded to blame
some outside cause, most likely some version of "terrorism".
The media matrix reality is the hypnotic trance that
seduces the public frog into tolerating the rising
temperature in the simmering pot.

What would it take for people to wake up? What would be the
form of a real Red Pill?

may the power be with you,
rkm

Who was behind the September eleventh attacks?
http://disc.server.com/discussion.cgi?id=149495&article=24052

We present below a transcript of the presentation given by
Thierry Meyssan on 8 April 2002 at the Zayed Center in Abu
Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), at a gathering organized under
the auspices Arab League and attended by the diplomatic
corps and the international press corps. This presentation
was followed by questions and answers, which are in the
process of being transcribed and translated.

Your Highness, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

In the first minutes following the first attack on the World
Trade Center, officials suggested to the media that the
person behind the attacks was Osama bn Laden, the epitome of
Muslim fanaticism. Not long after, the recently appointed
director of the FBI, Robert Mueller III, designated nineteen
kamikazes by name and mobilized all the means at the
disposal of his agency to track down their accomplices. The
FBI thus never undertook any investigation but, instead,
organized a man hunt, which, in the eyes much of the United
States public, quickly took on the appearance of an Arab
hunt. This reached such a pitch that people were incited to
attack - even kill - Arabs whom they naively considered
collectively responsible for the attacks.

There was no investigation by Congress, which, at the
request of the White House, renounced exercising its
constitutional role, supposedly in order not to adversely
affect national security. Nor was there investigation by any
media representatives, who had been summoned to the White
House and prevailed upon to abstain from following up any
leads lest such inquiries also adversely affect national
security.

If we analyze the attacks of September the eleventh, we
notice first off that there was much more to them than the
official version acknowledges.

1.We know about only four planes, whereas at one point it
was a question of eleven planes. Further, an
examination of the insider-trading conducted in relation to
the attacks shows put-option speculative trading in the
stock of three airline companies: American Airlines, United
Airlines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

2. The official version does not include the attack on the
White House annex, the Old Executive Office Building (called
the "Eisenhower Building"). Yet, on the morning of the
eleventh, ABC television broadcast, live, pictures of a fire
ravaging the presidential services building.

3. Neither does the official version take into account the
collapse of a third building in Manhattan World Trade Center
complex, independently of the twin towers. This third
building was not hit by a plane. However, it, too, was
ravaged by a fire before collapsing for an unknown reason.
This building contained the world's biggest secret CIA
operations base, where the Agency engaged in economic
intelligence gathering that the military-industrial lobby
considered a waste of resources that should have been
devoted to strategic intelligence gathering.

If we look closely at the attack against the Pentagon, we
notice that the official version amounts to an enormous lie.

According to the Defense Department, a Boeing 757, all trace
of which had been lost somewhere over Ohio, flew some 500
kilometers (300 miles) without being noticed. It supposedly
entered Pentagon air space and descended on to the lawn
surrounding the heliport, bounced off the lawn, broke a wing
in collision with an electric transformer station, hit the
façade at the level of the ground floor and first story, and
was totally consumed by fire, leaving no other traces than
two dysfunctional black boxes and pieces of passengers'
bodies.

It is obviously impossible that a Boeing 757 could, for some
500 kilometers, escape detection by civil and military
radar, by fighter-bomber planes sent in pursuit of it and by
observation satellites that had just been activated.

It is also obviously impossible that a Boeing 757 could
enter the Pentagon's air space without being destroyed by
one or more of the five missile batteries protecting the
building.

When one examines the photographs of the façade, taken in
the minutes following the attack (even before the Arlington
civilian fire fighters had time to deploy), one sees no
trace of the right wing on fire in front of the façade, nor
any hole in the façade into which the plane could have been
swallowed up.

Apparently without the least fear of laying itself open to
ridicule, the Defense Department declared that the jet
engines, made out of tempered steel, had disintegrated under
the shock of the impact - without damaging the façade. The
aluminum of the fuselage is claimed to have combusted at
more than 2,500¬į Celsius within the building and to have
been transformed into gas, but the bodies of the passengers
which it contained were so little burned that they were
later identified from their finger prints.

Responding to journalists during a press conference at the
Pentagon, the fire chief claimed that "no voluminous debris
from the aircraft" had remained, "nor any piece of the
fuselage, nor anything of that sort". He declared that
neither he nor his men knew what had become of the aircraft.

Close examination of the official photographs of the scene
of the attack, taken and published by the Defense
Department, shows that no part of the Pentagon bears any
mark of an impact that could be attributed to the crash of a
Boeing 757.

One must acknowledged the evidence: it is impossible that
the attack against the Pentagon on September 11, killing 125
persons, was carried out by a jet airliner.

The scene of the attack was thoroughly disturbed on the
following day by the immediate launch of new construction
work, with the result that many of the elements necessary to
reconstruct what had happened are missing. The elements that
do remain, however, converge in a single hypothesis that it
is not possible to prove with certainty.

An air traffic controller from Washington has testified
seeing on radar an object flying at about 800 kilometers per
hour, moving initially toward the White House, then turning
sharply toward the Pentagon, where it seemed to crash. The
air traffic controller has testified that the
characteristics of the flight were such that it could only
have been a military projectile.

Several hundred witnesses have claimed that they head "a
shrill noise like the noise of a fighter-bomber", but
nothing like the noise of a civilian aircraft.

Eye-witnesses have said that they saw "something like a
cruise missile with wings" or a small flying object "like a
plane carrying eight or twelve persons".

The flying object penetrated the building without causing
major damage to the façade. It crossed several of the
building rings of the Pentagon, creating in each wall it
pierced a progressively bigger hole. The final hole,
perfectly circular, measured about one meter eighty in
diameter. When traversing the first ring of the Pentagon,
the object set off a fire, as gigantic as it was sudden.
Huge flames burst from the building licking the façades,
then they shrank back just as fast, leaving behind a cloud
of black soot. The fire spread through a part of the first
ring and along two perpendicular corridors. It was so sudden
that the fire protection system could not react.

All these testimonies and observations correspond to the
effects of an AGM[air to ground missile]-86C of the third
(most recent) generation of CALCM [conventional air launched
cruise missile -- see picture at:
http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/smart/agm-86c.htm

equipped with depleted uranium warheads and guided by GPS
[global positioning system]. This type of missile, seen from
the side, would easily remind one of a small civilian
airplane, but it is not a plane. It produces a shrill
whistle comparable to that of a fighter-bomber, can be
guided with enough accuracy to be directed through a window,
can pierce the most resistant armor and can set off a fire -
independent of its piercing effect - that will generate heat
of over 2,000¬į Celsius.

This type of missile was developed jointly by the Navy and
the Air Force and is fired from a plane. The missile used
against the Pentagon destroyed the part of the building
where the new Supreme Naval Command Center was being
installed. Following the attack, the Navy Chief of Staff,
Admiral Vernon Walters, failed to show up in the crisis room
of the National Military Joint Intelligence Center when the
other members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff reported there.
Instead, he abruptly left the Pentagon.

Who, then, could have fired such a missile on the Pentagon?
The answer was given by the off-the-record revelations of
Ari Fleischer, the White House spokesman, and by Karl Rove,
senior advisor to the president, to journalists from the New
York Times and the Washington Post. Eighteen days later,
these men discounted the veracity of the information they
had given the journalists, claiming that they had been
speaking under the stress of great emotion.

According to those close to George W. Bush, in the course of
the morning, the Secret Service received a telephone call
from those behind the attacks, apparently in order to make
demands. To give credence to their demands, the masterminds
revealed the secret codes giving access to the secure
telephone lines available to the president for secure
communication with the various intelligence agencies and
services as well as for access to the nuclear arsenal. In
fact, only a very few persons with the highest security
clearances, in the top ranks of the government, could have
had these codes. It follows that at least one of the persons
behind the attacks of September 11 has a top government
post, either civilian or military.

To give credence to the fable of Islamic terrorists, the
United States authorities invented kamikazes.

Although it would have been possible for a well organized
group of persons to bring fire arms into commercial air
liners, the kamikazes apparently used cardboard cutters as
their only weapons. They are said to have learned to pilot
Boeing 757s and 767s in the space of several hours of
simulator training, becoming better pilots than
professionals. This mastery allowed them to carry out
complex in-flight approach maneuvers.

The Justice Department has never explained how it
established the list of the kamikazes. The airline companies
have furnished the exact number of passengers in each plane,
and the passenger lists, incomplete, do not mention the
persons who boarded at the last minute. In checking the
these lists, one notices that names of the kamikazes are not
on them and that only three passengers are not identified
for flight 11 and only two for flight 93. It is thus
impossible that 19 kamikazes boarded. Further, several of
those listed as kamikazes have turned up, alive. The FBI
nonetheless maintains that the high-jackers have all been
definitively identified and that complementary information
such as birth dates makes it improbable that they could be
confused with persons of the same name. For those who might
doubt this, the FBI has a ridiculous proof: whereas the
planes burned and the twin towers collapsed, the passport of
Mohammed Atta was miraculously found intact on the smoking
ruins of the World Trade Center.

The existence of high-jackers, whether these or others, is
confirmed by telephone calls made by several passengers to
members of their families. Unfortunately, these
conversations are known to us only by hearsay and have not
been published, even in the case of those that were
recorded. Thus, it has been impossible to verify that they
were actually made from a particular cell phone of from a
telephone on board. Here, too, we are asked to take the FBI
at its word.

Further, it was not indispensable to have high-jackers to
carry out the attacks. The Global Hawk technology, developed
by the Air Force, makes it possible to take control of a
commercial airliner regardless of the intentions of its
pilot(s) and to direct it by remote control.

There remains the case of Osama bin Laden. If it is generally
admitted that he was a CIA agent or collaborator during the
war against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, the current
version of events claims that he turned coat and became
public enemy number one of the United States. This story
does not bear up under scrutiny either. The French daily le
Figaro revealed that last July, Osmam bn Laden was a patient
at the American hospital in Dubai, where he was visited by
the head of CIA regional office. CBS television in the
United States has revealed that, on September 10, Osama bn
Laden was undergoing dialysis at the Rawalpindi military
hospital, under the protection of the Pakistani army. And
the renown French journalist Michel Peyrard, who was a
prisoner of the Taliban, has recounted how, last November,
Osama bn Laden was living openly in Jalalabad while the
United States was bombing other regions of the country. It
is difficult to believe that the greatest army in the world,
come to Afghanistan to arrest him, was unable to do so,
while the mollah Omar was able to escape from United States
military force on a moped.

In view of the elements that I have just presented, it
appears that the attacks of September can not be attributed
to foreign terrorists from the Arab-Muslim world - even if
some of those involved might have been Muslim - but to
United States terrorists.

The day after the attacks of September 11, United Nations
Security Council Resolution 1368 acknowledged "the inherent
right of individual or collective self-defense in accordance
with the Charter", calling on "all States to work together
urgently to bring to justice the perpetrators, organizers
and sponsors of these terrorist attacks and stresses that
those responsible for aiding, supporting or harboring the
perpetrators, organizers and sponsors of these acts will be
held accountable".

If one wishes to heed the call of the Security Council, to
enforce Resolution 1368 and to punish those who really are
guilty, the only way to accurately identify the guilty
parties is to set up a commission of inquiry whose
independence and objectivity are guaranteed by the United
Nations. This would also be the only way to preserve
international peace. In the meantime, Your Highness,
Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, the foreign military
interventions of the United States of America are devoid of
any basis in international law, whether it be their recent
intervention in Afghanistan or their announced interventions
in Iran, Iraq and in numerous other countries.

SPECIAL REPORT

Faced with a military crackdown in Poland, Ronald Reagan and John Paul II secretly joined forces to keep the Solidarity union alive. They hoped not only to pressure Warsaw but to free all of Eastern Europe.

By Carl Bernstein

Only President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II were present in the Vatican Library on Monday, June 7, 1982. It was the first time the two had met, and they talked for 50 minutes. In the same wing of the papal apartments, Agostino Cardinal Casaroli and Archbishop Achille Silvestrini met with Secretary of State Alexander Haig and Judge William Clark, Reagan's National Security Adviser. Most of their discussion focused on Israel's invasion of Lebanon, then in its second day; Haig told them Prime Minister Menachem Begin had assured him that the invasion would not go farther than 25 miles inside Lebanon.

But Reagan and the Pope spent only a few minutes reviewing events in the Middle East. Instead they remained focused on a subject much closer to their heart: Poland and the Soviet dominance of Eastern Europe. In that meeting, Reagan and the Pope agreed to undertake a clandestine campaign to hasten the dissolution of the communist empire. Declares Richard Allen, Reagan's first National Security Adviser: "This was one of the great secret alliances of all time."

The operation was focused on Poland, the most populous of the Soviet satellites in Eastern Europe and the birthplace of John Paul II. Both the Pope and the President were convinced that Poland could be broken out of the Soviet orbit if the Vatican and the U.S. committed their resources to destabilizing the Polish government and keeping the outlawed Solidarity movement alive after the declaration of martial law in 1981.

Until Solidarity's legal status was restored in 1989 it flourished underground, supplied, nurtured and advised largely by the network established under the auspices of Reagan and John Paul II. Tons of equipment--fax machines (the first in Poland), printing presses, transmitters, telephones, shortwave radios, video cameras, photocopiers, telex machines, computers, word processors--were smuggled into Poland via channels established by priests and American agents and representatives of the AFL-CIO and European labor movements. Money for the banned union came from CIA funds, the National Endowment for Democracy, secret accounts in the Vatican and Western trade unions.

Lech Walesa and other leaders of Solidarity received strategic advice--often conveyed by priests or American and European labor experts working undercover in Poland--that reflected the thinking of the Vatican and the Reagan Administration. As the effectiveness of the resistance grew, the stream of information to the West about the internal decisions of the Polish government and the contents of Warsaw's communications with Moscow became a flood. The details came not only from priests but also from spies within the Polish government.

Down with Yalta

According to aides who shared their leaders' view of the world, Reagan and John Paul II refused to accept a fundamental political fact of their lifetimes: the division of Europe as mandated at Yalta and the communist dominance of Eastern Europe. A free, non communist Poland, they were convinced, would be a dagger to the heart of the Soviet empire; and if Poland became democratic, other East European states would follow.

"We both felt that a great mistake had been made at Yalta and something should be done," Reagan says today. "Solidarity was the very weapon for bringing this about, because it was an organization of the laborers of Poland." Nothing quite like Solidarity had ever existed in Eastern Europe, Reagan notes, adding that the workers' union "was contrary to anything the Soviets would want or the communists [in Poland] would want."

According to Solidarity leaders, Walesa and his lieutenants were aware that both Reagan and John Paul II were committed to Solidarity's survival, but they could only guess at the extent of the collaboration. "Officially I didn't know the church was working with the U.S.," says Wojciech Adamiecki, the organizer and editor of underground Solidarity newspapers and now a counselor at the Polish embassy in Washington. "We were told the Pope had warned the Soviets that if they entered Poland he would fly to Poland and stay with the Polish people. The church was of primary assistance. It was half open, half secret. Open as far as humanitarian aid--food, money, medicine, doctors' consultations held in churches, for instance--and secret as far as supporting political activities: distributing printing machines of all kinds, giving us a place for underground meetings, organizing special demonstrations."

At their first meeting, Reagan and John Paul II discussed something else they had in common: both had survived assassination attempts only six weeks apart in 1981, and both believed God had saved them for a special mission. "A close friend of Ronald Reagan's told me the President said, `Look how the evil forces were put in our way and how Providence intervened,'" says Pio Cardinal Laghi, the former apostolic delegate to Washington. According to National Security Adviser Clark, the Pope and Reagan referred to the "miraculous" fact that they had survived. Clark said the men shared "a unity of spiritual view and a unity of vision on the Soviet empire: that right or correctness would ultimately prevail in the divine plan."

"Reagan came in with very simple and strongly held views," says Admiral Bobby Inman, former deputy director of the CIA. "It is a valid point of view that he saw the collapse [of communism] coming and he pushed it--hard." During the first half of 1982, a five-part strategy emerged that was aimed at bringing about the collapse of the Soviet economy, fraying the ties that bound the U.S.S.R. to its client states in the Warsaw Pact and forcing reform inside the Soviet empire. Elements of that strategy included:

-- The U.S. defense buildup already under way, aimed at making it too costly for the Soviets to compete militarily with the U.S. Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative--Star Wars--became a centerpiece of the strategy.

-- Covert operations aimed at encouraging reform movements in Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Poland.

-- Financial aid to Warsaw Pact nations calibrated to their willingness to protect human rights and undertake political and free-market reforms.

-- Economic isolation of the Soviet Union and the withholding of Western and Japanese technology from Moscow. The Administration focused on denying the U.S.S.R. what it had hoped would be its principal source of hard currency in the 21st century: profits from a transcontinental pipeline to supply natural gas to Western Europe. The 3,600-mile-long pipeline, stretching from Siberia to France, opened on time on Jan. 1, 1984, but on a far smaller scale than the Soviets had hoped.

-- Increased use of Radio Liberty, Voice of America and Radio Free Europe to transmit the Administration's messages to the peoples of Eastern Europe.

Yet in 1982 neither Reagan nor the Pope could anticipate the accession of a Soviet leader like Mikhail Gorbachev, the father of glasnost and perestroika; his efforts at reform unleashed powerful forces that spun out of his control and led to the breakup of the Soviet Union. The Washington-Vatican alliance "didn't cause the fall of communism," observes a U.S. official familiar with the details of the plot to keep Solidarity alive. "Like all great and lucky leaders, the Pope and the President exploited the forces of history to their own ends."

The Crackdown

The campaign by Washington and the Vatican to keep Solidarity alive began immediately after General Wojciech Jaruzelski declared martial law on Dec. 13, 1981. In those dark hours, Poland's communications with the noncommunist world were cut; 6,000 leaders of Solidarity were detained; hundreds were charged with treason, subversion and counterrevolution; nine were killed; and the union was banned. But thousands of others went into hiding, many seeking protection in churches, rectories and with priests. Authorities took Walesa into custody and interned him in a remote hunting lodge.

Shortly after Polish security forces moved into the streets, Reagan called the Pope for his advice. At a series of meetings over the next few days, Reagan discussed his options. "We had a massive row in the Cabinet and the National Security Council about putting together a menu of counteractions," former Secretary of State Haig recalls. "They ranged from sanctions that would have been crushing in their impact on Poland to talking so tough that we would have risked creating another situation like Hungary in '56 or Czechoslovakia in '68."

Haig dispatched Ambassador at Large Vernon Walters, a devout Roman Catholic, to meet with John Paul II. Walters arrived in Rome soon after, and met separately with the Pope and with Cardinal Casaroli, the Vatican secretary of state. Both sides agreed that Solidarity's flame must not be extinguished, that the Soviets must become the focus of an international campaign of isolation, and that the Polish government must be subjected to moral and limited economic pressure.

According to U.S. intelligence sources, the Pope had already advised Walesa through church channels to keep his movement operating underground, and to pass the word to Solidarity's 10 million members not to go into the streets and risk provoking Warsaw Pact intervention or civil war with Polish security forces. Because the communists had cut the direct phone lines between Poland and the Vatican, John Paul II communicated with Jozef Cardinal Glemp in Warsaw via radio. He also dispatched his envoys to Poland to report on the situation. "The Vatican's information was absolutely better and quicker than ours in every respect," says Haig. "Though we had some excellent sources of our own, our information was taking too long to filter through the intelligence bureaucracy."

In the first hours of the crisis, Reagan ordered that the Pope receive as quickly as possible relevant American intelligence, including information from a Polish Deputy Minister of Defense who was secretly reporting to the CIA. Washington also handed over to the Vatican reports and analysis from Colonel Ryszard Kuklinski, a senior member of the Polish general staff, who was a CIA informant until November 1981, when he had to be smuggled out of Poland after he warned that the Soviets were prepared to invade if the Polish government did not impose martial law. Kuklinski had issued a similar warning about a Soviet military action in late 1980, which led the outgoing Carter Administration to send secret messages to Leonid Brezhnev informing him that among the costs of an invasion would be the sale of sophisticated U.S. weapons to China. This time, Kuklinski reported to Washington, Brezhnev had grown more impatient, and a disastrous harvest at home meant that the Kremlin did not need mechanized army units to help bring in the crops and instead could spare them for an invasion. "Anything that we knew that we thought the Pope would not be aware of, we certainly brought it to his attention," says Reagan. "Immediately."

The Catholic Team

The key Administration players were all devout Roman Catholics--CIA chief William Casey, Allen, Clark, Haig, Walters and William Wilson, Reagan's first ambassador to the Vatican. They regarded the U.S.-Vatican relationship as a holy alliance: the moral force of the Pope and the teachings of their church combined with their fierce anticommunism and their notion of American democracy. Yet the mission would have been impossible without the full support of Reagan, who believed fervently in both the benefits and the practical applications of Washington's relationship with the Vatican. One of his earliest goals as President, Reagan says, was to recognize the Vatican as a state "and make them an ally."

According to Admiral John Poindexter, the military assistant to the National Security Adviser when martial law was declared in Poland, Reagan was convinced that the communists had made a huge miscalculation: after allowing Solidarity to operate openly for 16 months before the crackdown, the Polish government would only alienate its countrymen by attempting to cripple the labor movement and, most important, would bring the powerful church into direct conflict with the Polish regime. "I didn't think that this [the decision to impose martial law and crush Solidarity] could stand, because of the history of Poland and the religious aspect and all," Reagan says. Says Cardinal Casaroli: "There was a real coincidence of interests between the U.S. and the Vatican."

The major decisions on funneling aid to Solidarity and responding to the Polish and Soviet governments were made by Reagan, Casey and Clark, in consultation with John Paul II. "Reagan understood these things quite well, including the covert side," says Richard Pipes, the conservative Polish-born scholar who headed the NSC's Soviet and East European desks. "The President talked about the evil of the Soviet system--not its people--and how we had to do everything possible to help these people in Solidarity who were struggling for freedom. People like Haig and Commerce Secretary Malcolm Baldrige and James Baker [White House chief of staff at the time] thought it wasn't realistic. George Bush never said a word. I used to sit behind him, and I never knew what his opinions were. But Reagan really understood what was at stake."

By most accounts, Casey stepped into the vacuum in the first days after the declaration of martial law in Poland and--as he did in Central America--became the principal policy architect. Meanwhile Pipes and the NSC staff began drafting proposals for sanctions. "The object was to drain the Soviets and to lay blame for martial law at their doorstep," says Pipes. "The sanctions were coordinated with Special Operations [the CIA division in charge of covert task forces], and the first objective was to keep Solidarity alive by supplying money, communications and equipment."

"The church was trying to modulate the whole situation," explains one of the NSC officials who directed the effort to curtail the pipeline. "They [church leaders] were in effect trying to create circumstances that would head off the serious threat of Soviet intervention while allowing us to get tougher and tougher; they were part and parcel of virtually all of our deliberations in terms of how we viewed the evolution of government-sponsored repression in Poland--whether it was lessening or getting worse, and how we should proceed."

As for his conversations with Reagan about Poland, Clark says they were usually short. "I don't think I ever had an in-depth, one-on-one, private conversation that existed for more than three minutes with him--on any subject. That might shock you. We had our own code of communication. I knew where he wanted to go on Poland. And that was to take it to its nth possibilities. The President and Casey and I discussed the situation on the ground in Poland constantly: covert operations; who was doing what, where, why and how; and the chances of success." According to Clark, he and Casey directed that the President's daily brief--the PDB, an intelligence summary prepared by the CIA--include a special supplement on secret operations and analysis in Poland.

The Pope himself, not only his deputies, met with American officials to assess events in Poland and the effectiveness of American actions and sent back messages--sometimes by letter, sometimes orally--to Reagan. On almost all his trips to Europe and the Middle East, Casey flew first to Rome, so that he could meet with John Paul II and exchange information. But the principal emissary between Washington and Rome remained Walters, a former deputy director of the CIA who worked easily with Casey. Walters met with the Pope perhaps a dozen times, according to Vatican sources. "Walters was sent to and from the Vatican for the specific purpose of carrying messages between the Pope and the President," says former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican Wilson. "It wasn't supposed to be known that Walters was there. It wasn't all specifically geared to Poland; sometimes there were also discussions about Central America or the hostages in Lebanon."

Often in the Reagan years, American covert operations (including those in Afghanistan, Nicaragua and Angola) involved "lethal assistance" to insurgent forces: arms, mercenaries, military advisers and explosives. In Poland the Pope, the President and Casey embarked on the opposite path: "What they had to do was let the natural forces already in place play this out and not get their fingerprints on it," explains an analyst. What emerges from the Reagan-Casey collaboration is a carefully calibrated operation whose scope was modest compared with other CIA activities. "If Casey were around now, he'd be having some smiles," observes one of his reluctant admirers. "In 1991 Reagan and Casey got the reordering of the world that they wanted."

The Secret Directive

Less than three weeks before his meeting with the Pope in 1982, the President signed a secret national-security-decision directive (NSDD 32) that authorized a range of economic, diplomatic and covert measures to "neutralize efforts of the U.S.S.R." to maintain its hold on Eastern Europe. In practical terms, the most important covert operations undertaken were those inside Poland. The primary purposes of NSDD 32 were to destabilize the Polish government through covert operations involving propaganda and organizational aid to Solidarity; the promotion of human rights, particularly those related to the right of worship and the Catholic Church; economic pressure; and diplomatic isolation of the communist regime. The document, citing the need to defend democratic reform efforts throughout the Soviet empire, also called for increasing propaganda and underground broadcasting operations in Eastern Europe, actions that Reagan's aides and dissidents in Eastern Europe believe were particularly helpful in chipping away at the notion of Soviet invincibility. Vernon A. Walters
Lieutenant General, United States Army
Public Official
Statement by Director of Central Intelligence

George J. Tenet on the Death of
Former Deputy Director of Central Intelligence Vernon Walters
I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Vernon Walters. An honest patriot of enormous talent, his was an exceptionally rich life of service to country and humanity. A natural leader, he rose to excellence in every profession he entered‚€”soldier, intelligence officer, diplomat.

To the men and women of the Central Intelligence Agency, Vernon Walters is more than a wise hand who guided our organization in difficult times. With his remarkable knowledge of the world, and his passion to see it changed for the better, he will remain for us an example of what the very best in our field must always be.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From A Contemporary Press Report: February 15, 2002
Vernon A. Walters, 85, Former Envoy to U.N.

Vernon A. Walters, a former ambassador to the United Nations and Deputy Director of Central Intelligence, died Sunday in West Palm Beach, Florida. He was 85.

General Walters occupied a front- row seat at an array of historic events in the post-World War II era, as a translator, adviser, administrator and diplomat. He spoke seven or eight languages, five of them fluently, and served part time as an interpreter to five presidents.

His fluency in languages helped throughout his career. In "Silent Missions," his 1978 memoir, General Walters described a conversation he had at a reception in 1964 with the Soviet ambassador to Brazil. The ambassador complained to General Walters, then the United States military attaché in Brazil, that Americans always wanted to converse in English. Even when they try to learn a foreign tongue, he
explained, they suffer because they do not have the Slavs' ear for languages.

General Walters switched to Russian in reply, asking him if he would rather speak Portuguese instead. The ambassador, embarrassed, answered, "Walters, you may be good soldier, but diplomat you are not."

Vernon Anthony Walters was born in New York City on January 3, 1917, and attended Stonyhurst College in England. He joined the United States Army in 1941, and served in North Africa and Italy during World War II, retiring in 1976 as a Lieutenant General.

From 1955 to 1960, he was a staff assistant to President Eisenhower, acting as interpreter for the President, Vice President and senior diplomatic and military officials.

Appointed by President Nixon, General Walters was deputy chief of the C.I.A. from 1972 to 1976. Just weeks after Mr. Nixon sent him to the agency, the White House tried to involve the C.I.A. in the Watergate scandal that eventually forced Mr. Nixon's resignation.

According to later Congressional testimony by John W. Dean 3d, the President's counsel at the time, Mr. Nixon had picked General Walters for the job in order to have a "good friend" in the intelligence agency.

Two Nixon aides, H. R. Haldeman and John D. Ehrlichman, asked General Walters to caution the Federal Bureau of Investigation to limit its inquiries lest they compromise C.I.A. operations. "It simply did not occur to me that the chief of staff of the President might be asking me something that was illegal or wrong," Mr. Walters wrote in his memoir.

But on orders from his superior, Richard M. Helms, the director of central intelligence, the general rescinded his advisory to the F.B.I. According to General Walters, Mr. Dean subsequently asked him repeatedly to pay off the Watergate burglars with secret C.I.A. funds, but he refused to do so and threatened to resign publicly if there was one more such call.

In 1981, President Reagan offered General Walters the job of roving ambassador, which he accepted. Finally, he served as ambassador to the United Nations from 1985 to 1988, and as ambassador to West Germany from 1989 to 1991.

At the time of the appointment of General Walters as ambassador to the United Nations, William E. Colby, the former director of central intelligence, said: "When he worked for me, he was fearless in expressing his views and totally loyal once a decision was made. I used him as a total alter ego."

In 1991, when asked what kept him going into his 50th year of service to the country, General Walters replied, "My perception that the United States was the only real chance freedom had to survive in the world."

He had many opportunities in his career to witness the making of history. He was W. Averell Harriman's aide in the early years of the cold war, accompanied President Truman to a meeting with an insubordinate General Douglas MacArthur during the Korean War and shuttled with President Eisenhower to a series of summit meetings, held in Geneva and White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, among other places.

As translator for Vice President Nixon during his good-will tour of Latin America in 1958, General Walters was cut in the mouth by broken glass when a mob stoned their car in Caracas. Later, as a military attaché in Paris, General Walters is remembered for borrowing the private plane of President Georges Pompidou to smuggle Henry A. Kissinger in and out of France for clandestine meetings with
Le Duc Tho of North Vietnam.

"He was great as our James Bond, getting us in and out secretly, even giving us code names," said Winston Lord, former president of the Council on Foreign Relations, who accompanied Mr. Kissinger to the secret talks with the Vietnamese.

General Walters, a bachelor, leaves no immediate survivors. He is to be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery early next month.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

February 14, 2002:

Vernon A. Walters, 85, a retired Army Lieutenant General, intelligence officer and diplomat who was a deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency and ambassador to the United Nations, died February 10, 2002, at Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The cause of death was not reported.

General Walters spent his career in the shadowy world of political and strategic secrets. He was variously described as the quintessential quiet American and as the U.S. version of James Bond, an idea he dismissed as absurd. He believed the United
States must be able to project its military power in credible ways, but he also believed that the purpose of diplomacy is making friends. He told an interviewer that people who doubted that serious diplomatic business was conducted at cocktail parties had never been to one.

A linguist, he spoke French, Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch, Portuguese and Russian. He translated for President Dwight D. Eisenhower and French President Charles de Gaulle as the two sat in their bathrobes in front of a fire at Rambouillet Palace outside Paris and for Vice President Richard M. Nixon when his limousine was attacked by a mob in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1958.

In the 1960s, Gen. Walters had successive assignments as U.S. military attaché to Italy, Brazil and France. He also served in Vietnam and regarded the U.S. effort there a "battlefield of freedom" and "one of our noblest fights."

He was deputy director of the CIA from 1972 to 1976. For a period in 1973, he was acting director of the agency. During that time, he successfully resisted efforts by John Dean, the White House counsel, to involve the CIA in efforts to cover up the
Watergate scandal that led to Nixon's resignation.

From 1981 to 1985, Gen. Walters was ambassador at large in the Reagan administration, a job in which he visited more than 100 countries. He was ambassador to the United Nations from 1985 to 1988 and then ambassador to Germany until 1991.

In a statement on General Walters's death, CIA Director George J. Tenet described him as "an honest patriot of enormous talent" who led "an exceptionally rich life of service to country and humanity."

"A natural leader, General Walters rose to excellence in every profession he entered," Tenet said. "With his remarkable knowledge of the world, and his passion to see it change for the better, he will remain for us an example of what the very best in our field must always be."

General Walters was born in New York. When he was 6, his family moved to Europe, and he grew up in Paris. He attended Stonyhurst College, a secondary school in England, but left at age 16 to work for his father. He never attended college.

His military career began when he was drafted into the Army in 1941. He was soon commissioned. During World War II, he served in North Africa and Europe.

In the immediate postwar years, he was an aide to General Mark Clark, the U.S. commander in Austria. At Clark's recommendation, General George Marshall, the Army chief of staff, moved him onto his personal staff. This led to his going to
White House under President Harry S. Truman and, later, under Eisenhower.

General Walters had an uncanny ability to be present at large events. As an aide to Truman, he was the note-taker when the president fired Douglas MacArthur during the Korean War. He was in Tehran in 1953 when the CIA staged a coup in support
of the shah of Iran and in Brazil when a group of generals staged a coup in 1964.

He also was involved in secret negotiations between the United States and North Vietnam. He once had the task of smuggling Henry A. Kissinger, then Nixon's national security adviser, into Paris. He did it by borrowing the plane of French President George Pompidou, an old friend.

lots of the same networks Carlucci, etc. in play with (the late) Walters, WALTERS HAS A HISTORY OF BEING INVOLVED IN CIA COUPS, DRUG POLICING/TRAFFICING, YOU KNOW, READ ON:

To have Fritz Kraemer's name twice in this one article as being the kind of person that will have direct access to the White House: no more basement; no more cow towing to Congress; and no more having to deal with the State Department. It's quite clear what they want.

Now who is this Fritz Kraemer? Why do I keep talking about Fritz Kraemer? I'm going to run through a few questions and points about Fritz Kraemer that some of you remember and have, but I owe it to the new listeners to understand [some things] about Fritz Kraemer.

In all of the biographies and autobiographies of Henry Kissinger and Alexander Haig they refer to one man, Mr. Fritz Kraemer, as the man responsible for their career; they give him credit. And in our Army he left as a lieutenant, and he made this General [Haig] and this powerful Henry Kissinger.

In all the policies where Henry Kissinger has moved: as Secretary of State, in National Security, in the State Department, or with Nelson Rockefeller in the Council on Foreign Relations, or the Trilateral Commission‚€”there has been blood and chaos wherever he has his influence.

Chapter 20

U.S.-Cuba Relations During the Reagan Administration

Antonio R. de la Cova

Reagan's initial conciliatory measures did not sway Castro. U.S.-Cuba relations soured in mid-September 1981 when Castro publicly accused Reagan of being a "fascist...covered in blood" for his support of Israel and the Salvadorian government.(11) A week later, Reagan signed Executive Order 12323 creating the Presidential Commission on Broadcasting to Cuba, which would launch Radio Martí four years later. On October 30, the U.S. flexed its military muscles in the Caribbean with a month-long naval exercise. The Cuban government went on full military alert for what it called an imminent American invasion. Before the maneuvers ended, Haig held a secret meeting with Cuban Vice President Carlos Rafael Rodríguez in Mexico City on 23 November. Talks broke down when Haig reiterated American support for the Salvadoran government and Rodríguez purported that Cuba was not sending weapons to the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) guerrillas. Both sides agreed to continue talks in the future.(12)

Secret conversations were renewed in March 1982, when Reagan sent General Vernon Walters to Havana for a five-hour meeting with Castro and Rodríguez. Walters offered trade concessions in exchange for the repatriation of the Mariel undesirables and the termination of Cuban military shipments to Central America, nut Castro rejected the proposition.(13) This impasse prompted the State Department to ban American Tourists and business trips to the island, unrestricted since 1977, and allowed the U.S.-Cuba fishing limits agreement to lapse.(14) A week later, the Havana regime canceled the Coast Guard Agreement established under President Carter, which allowed joint cooperation against drug smugglers.(15) Reagan them told reporters, "...we don't have any dealing with Cuba. If they'd ever like to rejoin the civilized world, we'd be happy to help them. But no under the present circumstances."(16) At the same time, the Reagan Administration resorted to the "big stick" policy by launching the massive OCEAN VENTURE military maneuver in the Caribbean. In June, Cuban Vice President Rodríguez rejected the possibility of reconciliation between both nations.(17)

I typed up a sheet of this and sent it with other information at the time the President went to Bitburg. This is taken from that same sheet, so some of you have it. Incidentally, next week‚€”my copying machine is broken today‚€”I will send you the article by Evans and Novak, and on the back I'll put this information that you can send on to members of the committees and Congress or newspeople with more information on Fritz Kraemer.

Now wherever the countries were overthrown the narcotics followed. When it was in Southeast Asia in Laos, the opium started coming in. The people involved with the Contragate; defendants in the Christic Institute [lawsuit]: General Secord, General Singlaub, Thomas Clines, and Theadore Shackley from the CIA‚€”were all involved with opium traffic in Southeast Asia in Laos, in the Nugan-Hand Bank, and bringing opium and narcotics into the United States. Kissinger made policies of narcotics in Asia in this way.

In Iran where he helped Nelson Rockefeller and the CIA with the first coup overthrowing Mossadeq and putting in the Shaw of Iran. The Shaw was a great drug trafficker. Via Marseilles and the French connections in Pakistan, when Buto(?) was killed and Zia took care of the drug traffic they became one of the largest drug dealers in the world. Henry Kissinger changed that government.

He worked closely with the escape of Klaus Barbie, was with him after the war in Germany, and was instrumental in contacts and politics in Bolivia when Barbie began to instigate his ascendancy in the cocaine traffic‚€”after Richard Nixon came to power‚€”out of Bolivia.

South Korea and Japan have used Ryoichi Sasakowa, the old Kuomintang gang, the China Lobby, to get power through narcotics and so forth. Wherever Kissinger has had policies in Southeast Asia, Iran, Pakistan, Bolivia, Brazil, South America, Central America, Middle East‚€”it had to do with the escalation, into our banks, of about 80 billion dollars of narcotics and drug money coming in thanks to these policies.

Henry Kissinger had a long association with Hitler's top Generals‚€”even though he was young‚€”after World War Two. He was in the U.S. Army: C.I.C., the Intelligence Core, the 970th division, in charge of Klaus Barbie in 1945.

John J. McCloy, who we know was on the Warren Commission and concealed the Nazi role in the murder of John Kennedy, released the top Nazi criminals that were arrested. And he's the gentleman who put Henry Kissinger into Harvard, and along with Peter Drucker and Mr. Fritz Kraemer they handled Kissinger's career from Harvard to the Council on Foreign Relations into the State Department.

Klaus Barbie became a cocaine king along with the government officials in Bolivia. Henry Kissinger and Richard Nixon were close to those men in power. He was assigned to be in charge of top Nazis after the war when he was just very, very young. And then after that went to Harvard and was stationed in Germany over [in] Oberammergau, Germany, which is one of the most anti-Semetic cities in Germany.

Henry Kissinger's mentor [was written about] in a Washington Post article March 2, 1975 by a gentleman who is not around anymore; he past away. The author of this particular document is Nick Thimmesch. It's a first article and probably the only one about Fritz Kraemer in the United States that has been available up to this time. He referred to him as a Plans Officer for the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. He retired in the late 1970s. As you see he didn't retire, he went from Defense to NSC. He's the man behind Alexander Haig, Vernon Walters (our U.N. Ambassador now) [1987], James Schlesinger and Arri Frolick(?). Walters also helped overthrow the government of Brazil with Frank Carlucci, our current National Security Advisor. Kraemer came from a wealthy German family in the chemical dyes and paraffin industry in Germany. Probably I.G. Farben because they had the monopoly on the dyes and chemicals before, during, and after the war. He came from a family of a monarchist. His son, Sven Kraemer, was in Nazi Germany during the war. Fritz Kraemer picked up his family after the war and brought them to the United States where his military/political career moved on.

He came to the United States originally in 1943 while his wife and son and mother were living in Nazi Germany. He joined the United States Army Intelligence and he recruited Henry Kissinger, who was also in the United States Intelligence. And Fritz Kraemer and Henry Kissinger were stationed over in Oberammergau when the war was over. And as I say, Kissinger then went on to Harvard, and Kraemer went to the Pentagon. Both were in the Battle of the Bulge at the same time that the Waffen SS had Hitler's top Generals in the Battle of the Bulge. And one of Hitler's top Generals was named Fritz Kraemer.

The background I've given you, just a few sentences, is about the Fritz Kraemer who currently runs the National Security Council. That's his background; how he came to America, just in a few sentences, written by Nick Thimmesch.

Adolf Hitler had a Fritz Kraemer I learned as I began to study this other Fritz Kraemer. Adolf Hitler had three important men‚€”the most important at the end of World War Two‚€”around him. One was a General Fritz Kraemer. One was Sepp Dietrick and the other was Otto Skorzeny. The liaison between those men and Adolf Hitler and the Vatican was Richard von Wiezsacker, whose son is now the current President of Germany.

When the Battle of the Bulge was over and America won the war, by May of 1945, all three of these men, important to Hitler, were taken prisoner together: Kraemer, Dietrick, and Skorzeny. All three were in charge of the Battle of the Bulge for Hitler after the war. And all three were stationed in the exact locations of Henry Kissinger and Fritz Kraemer, who were German, who put on American military uniforms, and were located in the same location as Hitler's agents.

I'll take a one minute break and continue with the overlapping of these persons. There is one name and two persons, and I think it's one name and one person, and that's why it's important to pursue this particular problem.

BINGO! HOLY SHIT! SMOKING GUN TO BUSH SR., AND BUSH FAMILY/WALTERS

On Friday, January 30, Ford and Bush were joined at the CIA auditorium for Bush's swearing in ceremony before a large gathering of agency employees. Colby was also there: some said he had been fired primarily because Kissinger thought that he was divulging too much to the Congressional committees, but Kissinger later told Colby that the latter's stratagems had been correct. Colby opened the ceremony with a few brief words: "Mr. President, and Mr. Bush, I have the great honor to present you to an organization of dedicated professionals. Despite the turmoil and tumult of the last year, they continue to produce the best intelligence in the world." This was met by a burst of applause. [fn 25] Ford's line was: "We cannot improve this agency by destroying it." Bush promised to make "CIA an instrument of peace and an object of pride for all our people." Bush went on to say: "I will not turn my back from the past. We've learned a lot about what an intelligence agency must do to maintain the confidence of the people in an open society. But the emphasis will now be on the future. I'm determined to protect those things that must be kept secret. And I am more determined to protect those unselfish and patriotic people who with total dedication serve their country, often putting thjeir lives on the line, only to have some people bent on destroying this agency expose their names." A number of senators were invited, with Stennis, Thurmond, Tower, Goldwater, Baker and Brooke leading the pack; others had been added by the White House after checking by telephone with Jennifer Fitzgerald.

Before proceding, let us take a loom at Bush's team of associates at the CIA, since we will find them in many of his later political campaigns and office staffs.

When Bush became DCI, his principal deputy was General Vernon Walters, a former army lieutenant general.

WALTERS IN CHILE IN 1973 COUP.

--------------------------

FAR RIGHT ORGANIZATIONS:

THE BOHEMIAN CLUB

The Bohemian Club, a private all male club headquartered in San Francisco, was formed in 1872 by a group of San Francisco journalists. The Bohemian Grove is a 2,700 acre redwood forest with accomodations for nearly 3,000 people just 70 miles north of San Francisco in Monte Rio and on the Russian River. The Bohemian Club is comprised primarily of the world's most affluent political and business leaders. One must routinely wait 10 or 15 years before gaining admittance.

The membership list has included every Republican American president and some Democratic presidents since 1923. Herbert Hoover once referred to the Bohemian Club as "the greatest men's party on Earth." Other members are cabinet officials and directors and CEOs of large corporations. These high ranking members represent military contractors, oil companies, banks, utility companies, and national media. These members are assigned to specific camps based on their status levels. The most privileged members include Henry Kissinger, George Shultz, S. D. Bechtel Jr., Thomas Watson Jr. of IBM, Phillip Hawley of Bank of America, Dow Chemical Chairman Frank Popoff, Ralph Bailey of Dupont, Governor George W. Bush, General Colin Powell, Newt Gingrich, and actor Danny Glover. Those assigned to the Hillbillies, a less prestigious area are George Bush, A.W. Clausen of the World Bank, Walter Cronkite, and William F. Buckley.

The Bohemian Club hosts a two week retreat every July as well as other smaller gatherings throughout the year. The daily routines are informal. Members may swim in the Russian River, play dominoes, eat gourmet food and drink expensive alcohol. Many of the members sleep in tents on beds equipped with electric blankets.

Many of their discussions revolve around national and international politics. Lectures are given daily on various topics but politics is the most common. They may discuss which national candidates and judges should be nominated. It is alleged that the Manhatten project originated at the Bohemian Club and that Eisenhower was selected as the Republicans' candidate for 1952. "The "Lakeside Talks" are the most famous.

****Past speakers have been Presidents Nixon and Ford. General Vernon Walters, who was in Chile during the 1973 CIA coup, spoke on "Integration of the European Community,"**** Admiral Charles Larson lectured on "Looking Westward: America's Pacific Interest in a New Age." Outside speakers included Miguel De La Madrid, ex-president of Mexico, whose subject was "The Mexican Free Trade Agreement." Other topics have been "Can God Survive in America?," "l994-What Orwell Missed," "Where Goes U.S. Technology?", "P.O.W. Communication", and "Observations on the Soviet Union."

WALTERS INVOLVED IN BRAZILIAN MILITARY COUP 1964

from

Growth of Reagan's Contra Commitment
excerpted from the book
The Iran-Contra Connection
Secret Teams and Covert Operations in the Reagan Era
by Jonathan Marshall, Peter Dale Scott , Jane Hunter

In 1981, the period of its Argentine grand design for Central America, the Reagan administration appears in turn to have been exploiting P-2 pathways. One of its first envoys to Argentina and Guatemala for the grand design was General Vernon Walters, a major figure in the Brazilian military coup of 1964, and reportedly a prime architect in the blending of the various contra forces into a united FDN under Enrigue Bermudez in 1981. In May 1981 General Vernon Walters...visited Guatemala as a 'goodwill ambassador' of the Reagan Administration. At the same time, though, he was representing BRISA [Basic Resources International SA], which was seeking permission to export more oil. The Guatemalan military granted the request.

The fate of Calvi and his allies, by then ominous, was tied up with the fortunes of BRISA, whose chairman, as previously mentioned, was Sir James Goldsmith. In 1977 the Guatemalan government (with Mario Sandoval Alarcon as Vice-President) had awarded an oil concession to BRISA, one of whose board members was Calvi's representative Antonio Tonello. In March 1981, as the Italian investigation of Sindona led to Gelli's files and Calvi's name, the Calvi case was nearing its denouement. On May 20,1981, exactly one week after Walters' visit to Guatemala for Reagan and BRISA, both Calvi and Tonello were arrested (and soon convicted).

3.
When Bush became director of Central Intelligence (DCI), the incumbent
principal deputy director was Gen. Vernon Walters, a former Army lieutenant
general. This is the same Gen. Vernon Walters who was mentioned by Haldeman
and Nixon in the notorious "smoking gun" tape already discussed, but who of
course denied that he ever did any of the things that Haldeman and
Ehrlichman said that he had promised to do. Walters had been at the CIA
since May 1972 -- a Nixon appointee who had been with Nixon when the
then-Vice President's car was stoned in Caracas, Venezuela. Ever since
then, Nixon had seen him as part of the old guard. Walters left to become a
private consultant in July 1976.
