The Red and Black Coffee Collective Celebrates
The underground offers a pluralistic alternative to PICA's TBA (Time-Based Art) project at The Red and Black Coffee Collective, featuring the Birdman; recently flown in from Santa Fe, New Mexico. Frankly, nothing is planned for this event except for, perhaps, what the Birdman will be wearing: feathers seem appropriate. The performance will be woven in real-time collectively by the audience and the performer, although, technically there can be no distinction between the two. Everyone participates by their presence and follows consciously (or not) the following rules:
1. Make sounds/movements only in response to other sounds/movements.
2. Treat the silence/stillness as something that is fragile and precious.
3. Love and caress every sound/movement and never do anything carelessly.
4. The world is Chaos. Only your perception of order orders it. Make sounds/movements that make "sense" of the world.
5. Do 1 - 4 without thinking conscious verbal thoughts. As soon as you discover yourself "talking" to yourself, stop doing anything but listen and be still.
In many ways this performance may be similar to others one might experience at PICA's TBA series. How is it different? Even the price of admission is left to chance. Donations will be accepted for any amount to the 501(c)3 tax-exempt arts organization, Present Time Dream Factory, who will use the funds exclusively for deferring the expenses incurred by Birdman and The Red and Black Coffee Collective. Also, Birdman is staying on to live and work in Portland, continuing to perform at The Red and Black Coffee Collective on September 29, October 13 and every Wednesday from then on. Only TIME will tell when how the piece will evolve.
Who IS this Birdman? Birdman's alter ego is Bob Price, a clarinetist who lives and works in Portland. He recently moved here from Santa Fe, New Mexico, though he was originally from Dallas, Texas where he founded and performed with the electro-acoustic improvisation ensemble, BL Lacerta, for over 15 years. As a member of BL Lacerta he worked with Deborah Hay, Pauline Oliveros, John Cage, Stuart Dempster, etc. For more information please go to the following website: http://www.euphoniousmonks.com
