Searchers Find Body Of Missing Hiker

Zig Zag, Ore. - After spending all day looking for a missing hiker, searchers say they were saddened to find her body just two and a half miles from the Ramona Falls trailhead where her vehicle had been parked.

Sarah Bishop, 27, was reported missing by her father on Wednesday after she failed to return from what was supposed to be a four-day hike along the 42-mile Timberline Trail.

Searchers combed the backcountry area in the Mount Hood wilderness on Thursday, their efforts made difficult because heavy rains had made the trails hard to navigate.

They found her body around 2:30 p.m.

"It looks like she got all the way around the mountain and was on her way out of the trailhead," Deputy Joel Manley with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office told KATU News.

So far, it is unclear how she died, although foul play is not suspected.

The county's medical examiner will be conducting an investigation to determine the cause of her death.

Late Tuesday afternoon, a helicopter was being flown in to help remove her body from the area.

Bishop was an experienced hiker, but was not carrying a cell phone with her, which is a normal safety precaution that many hikers take.

The area she was hiking in had been drenched with rain in the past few days, which may have made her hike difficult.

Bishop was the project coordinator for 100% Portland, a nonpartisan group aimed at registering voters.

She had studied political theory at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington.

ZIGZAG, Ore. -- The search for a missing hiker on Mount Hood near Zigzag ended in tragedy when rescuers Thursday found the body of 27-year-old Sarah Bishop.

Bishop's body was found near the Sandy River, about two miles from her truck, which was parked at the Ramona Falls trailhead on the west side of Mount Hood. A search team found her body about 2:30 p.m., said Deputy Joel Manley of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

"It looks like she got all the way around the mountain and was on her way out of the trailhead before she became deceased," Manley said.

Investigators believe weather, which deluged the area with torrential rain, may have played a factor in her death.

The Oregon Army National Guard dispatched a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter to ferry a medical examiner to the area where Bishop's body was found. The helicopter will also help in the recovery effort, said Guard spokesperson Kay Fristad.

Bishop, of Portland, was supposed to return home Tuesday from a four-day backpacking trip around the Mt. Hood loop, a 42-mile trail which begins near Zigzag. But she never turned up, according to Sgt. Nick Watt with Clackamas County Search and Rescue.

Bishop's family told authorities that she is an avid hiker but was not familiar with the Timberline Trail, which she took. Searchers found Bishop's pickup truck near the Ramona Falls.

She was hiking alone and did not carry a cell phone. Authorities know for certain that Bishop was last seen on Saturday. Earlier Thursday, searchers thought her chances of survival were good.

"With everything we understand from the parents, she was an experienced hiker and had enough rations and was prepared for the hike," Watt said.

Bishop may have been last seen near the White River Canyon on Monday, according to Watt. Searchers carrying her photo showed it to a person who said he had possibly seen her.

When she failed to return, Bishop's father called police on Wednesday. A preliminary search began immediately, followed by a more organized search on Thursday.

A command post had been set up at the Zigzag Ranger Station and her father had also worked with search crews looking for her.
