Al-Qaeda planning major assassination to disrupt US vote

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Al-Qaeda is reportedly planning a high-level assassination against a US or foreign leader to disrupt the US presidential election, that will be set in motion by a new tape from its leader Osama bin Laden (news - web sites).

Quoting from unnamed US intelligence officials, The Washington Times said besides the United States, two possible places where the assassination would take place are Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

The assassination would signal the launch of more terrorist attacks involving "multiple targets in multiple venues" across the United States, the officials said.

They said the "very detailed" plans were found on a laptop computer of suspected Al-Qaeda computer expert Naeem Noor Khan, arrested in Pakistan last month.

"The goal of the next attack is twofold: to damage the US economy and to undermine the US election," an intelligence official said, referring to the November 2 presidential election pitting Republican President George W. Bush (news - web sites) and Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites).

"The view of Al-Qaeda is 'anybody but Bush,'" said the official.

The officials said the likely trigger for Al-Qaeda's new terrorist campaign would be a new video and audio message from bin Laden, which they expected to surface soon.

"The message likely will be the signal for the attack to be launched," one official said.

The terrorists haven't already not won! 11.Aug.2004 15:09

The terrorists haven't already not won!

Now I know it's fake. 11.Aug.2004 16:57

"The view of al-Qaeda is 'anybody but Bush'" Puhleeze, George Bush is any fundamentalist terror group's wet dream. If a terrorist attack were to occur it would be to keep him IN office. You can tell that the official has this built in assumption that terrorists cower in fear from the Mighty GW, terrorist slayer, the fact is the only people in the world who acctually believe this are right wing Americans who have their heads stuck up their asses.

Well, what do you expect? 11.Aug.2004 21:31

Mulberry Sellers

"Right-wing Americans who have their heads stuck up their asses" is a pretty perspicacious description of the target market of the Washington Times, which is the original source.

What I view skeptically is the purported quote from an "unnamed US intelligence official". The leakage coming out of the intelligence community over the last few months has hardly been a Bush commercial , and yet the Moonie Times considers a message aimed at hyping Bush's domestic political fortunes, coming from an official source speaking not-for-attribution to be plausible.

Maybe their source was Ridge- he's given to playing politics with terror warnings.

Or maybe it was just another flack.

anyone but bush? 11.Aug.2004 21:49

gotta be kidding

"The view of Al-Qaeda is 'anybody but Bush,'" said the official.

Why would they want to get rid of Bush? The invasion of Iraq was the best recruiting tool ever. What about the recent claim of catching an Al-Qaeda spy? That tipped off quite a few of thier operatives before anti-terror investigators could move in and gather sufficient evidence for a decent conviction. Bush has to be one of Al-Queda's best supporters.

It makes sense though. Bush's approval ratings would be in the toilet without a boogey man to keep people scared enough to believe him.

PLEASE don't kill our (gasp) politicians! 12.Aug.2004 11:36

Whatever you do - don't kill our politicians! That would be TRULY horrible! We all LOVE our politicians so much - why, what would we do without them? Shrivel up and die, most likely. Please, Mr. Terrorist Sirs, don't kill our brave selfless leaders!

that reminds me of 12.Aug.2004 11:50

a simpsons moment

Marge: I can't believe it. Jerry Springer didn't solve our conflict.
Lisa: And now he's dead.
Kang: Anywho, this is your last chance. Turn over the baby now.
Kodos: Or we will destroy all your leaders in Washington.
Marge: [knowingly] Oh, you couldn't destroy *every* politician.
Kang: Just watch us. [laughing menacingly, they board their flying saucer and take off]
Bart: Don't forget Ken Starr!
Marge: Suckers.
