Hijacking Catastrophe: Movie Premeire and Call to Action

On Friday, August 13th, Clinton Street Theater presents Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear and the Selling of American Empire. A reception open to the public begins at 7 p.m. The evening's event---including the film and presentations from organizations aiming to engage citizens in spirited and positive action---will begin at 8 p.m.
Hijacking Catastrophe illuminates the Bush Administration's ideological roots and documents how it deliberately manipulated intelligence, political imagery and the fears of the American people to promote a pre-existing, neo-conservative agenda. According to Daily Variety, "Hijacking Catastrophe goes beyond simple Bush-bashing to paint a horrifying portrait of organized U.S. imperialist expansion and public deception stretching back to the early Reagan era."

The disturbing evidence is supported by input from such notables as Chief UN Weapons Inspector Scott Ritter, Pentagon whistle-blower Lt. Colonel Karen Kwiatkowski, and Daniel Ellsberg, author of the bestseller Secrets: A Memoir of Vietnam and the Pentagon Papers. The film also includes Norman Mailer, Norm Chomsky and Nobel Prize Laureate Jody Williams.

The Portland Premiere of Highjacking Catastrophe will include inspiring emcee, pastor Matt Hennessee, who will guide the audience in considering positive and engaging ways to respond to the film. Several organizations including the Young Voter Project and the Bus Project will be on hand to provide film-goers with actions they can take to affect the outcome of this year's Presidential election. "My friends and I are planning this event so people can not only see the film but so they can also learn about ways channel their anger and despair about our country's activities into inspired action," said Mary Reinard, a Portland member of Spirited Action which held a similar event last month in the San Francisco area.
