Kucinich statement: "Unity is essential"

"The word is unity. We will unite now because we recognize that unity is essential to bring change in November. Unity is essential to repair America. Unity is essential to set America on a new path. John Kerry can win because there is a place within the Democratic party for everyone, including those who may be thinking of supporting Ralph Nader. Most people know I have many of the same commitments Ralph has. If there is room for me in the party and the Kerry-Edwards campaign, there is certainly room for Ralph and for his supporters."
"Unity is essential" (statement by Dennis Kucinich)

from Kucinich.us, July 22, 2004

For the past two and a half years, I have led a national effort for peace, for social and economic justice and health care for all. My campaign reached every state and territory. We participated in every primary and caucus. We pointed our party towards new directions. I am here to say that the next critical step we must take is to help elect John Kerry the next President of the United States.

Today I am happy to endorse the Kerry-Edwards ticket. And I look forward to helping to lead the way to elect John Kerry President and John Edwards Vice President of the United States.

With the same passion and commitment I demonstrated in my own campaign for President, I intend to reach out on behalf of the Kerry-Edwards ticket to unite our party with all those who may have felt left out. I will let them know that the time has come to unite in a common effort for change which is essential not only for America but for the world.

John Kerry can win because there is a place within the Democratic party for everyone, including those who may be thinking of supporting Ralph Nader. Most people know I have many of the same commitments Ralph has.

If there is room for me in the party and the Kerry-Edwards campaign, there is certainly room for Ralph and for his supporters.

Let's unite to create a new government, a new direction, a new opportunity, and new progress.

The tens of thousands of volunteers who helped our campaign across America will be enlisted to help the Kerry-Edwards ticket. Those delegates who pledged to me at the convention will be asked to join the Kerry- Edwards delegates in our sweep to victory. This convention will be a great celebration of John Kerry, John Edwards and our Democratic Party and its capacity to restore hope for all Americans.

The word is unity. My volunteers united at the Democratic Platform and we will unite now because we recognize that unity is essential to bring change in November. Unity is essential to repair America. Unity is essential to set America on a new path.

John Kerry is a good friend and a decent man. He has a lifelong commitment of honorable service to our nation as a soldier and as a Senator. He can be trusted with power. He will help heal America. He has outstanding intellectual gifts he will bring to the White House and to world affairs. I am proud to stand here to say I will do everything possible to make John Kerry the next President of the United States.

With your help and mine we will make sure he wins my home state of Ohio, the industrial Midwest and the White House.

Dennis threw my anti war voice away. I threw away his button I had.
I'm voting for Nader.
I will walk out of the booth with my head held high.

Why would you say such a thing? 23.Jul.2004 12:07

You threw away your Dennis button. Well, I still have (somewhere around here) my Jesse Jackson ("Run, Jesse, Run") button.

Dennis hasn't thrown away your anti-war voice or anyone's anti-war voice, so why would you say such a thing?

Dennis is just saying that his vision of the Democratic Party can (and even does) include Ralph Nader. Dennis has never criticized or made any negative statements about Ralph.

The day may come when progressives outside the Democratic Party join the Democratic Party -- or it may be that the day will come when progressives within the Democratic Party will walk out to join some third party. I don't have the ability to know the future. Meanwhile, we continue to build. And to welcome all other progressives to build with us. At this time, the House Progressive Caucus (with Dennis Kucinich and Barbara Lee as co-chairs) has about 55 members in the House. Let's try to put the pressure on to return all of those people, and add something above that 55, to the House Progressive Caucus ! !

I stand with Ralph. 23.Jul.2004 15:44

When the time was/allowed last year those at The Nation, (like Katrina V.H.), Alter-Net, other so-called progressives (Henry Waxman, Pelosi, Jim McDemott, Bill Moyers, Michael Moore, The League of Conservation voters, Bernie Sanders, AMONG OTHERS) were silent on Dennis. While he was ripped to shreds each week in the media with what little press he received, the people who could have helped him were silent.Ralph Nader openly endorsed him, and the Natural Law Party did too, it became clear in the late summer to early fall 2003 that if he would get the nomination we would be a unified front, all of us, together, with no Nader even running to distract or challenge. This is the time when the money should have flowed in, when the magazines and authors, poets, and personalities we all know should have rallied to the side of Dennis. He was clearer than Dean, and Dean was for the death penalty also, which should have turned us away from him.Instead it was go for the wrong guy, as the blind orgy of Deaniacs wouldn't listen as we pled and urged for Dennis's support.

And now, after all this time, he DID THROW AWAY my anti-war vote. Its not with Bush. Its not with Kerry. And Dennis urges me to go with Kerry and do the usual "we will change it from within" garbage which they've been doing forever to no avail. He didn't stand up.He caved in and its readily seen by us all.We knew he'd endorse Kerry, that was not in question, we didn't know every item he believed in was going to be virtually abandoned.

I'm with Ralph. And I hope he stays in till the election and doesn't cave in on a single issue he cares about.
