move the UN headquarters to Geneva - petition

Welcome to the website of the Move United Nations Headquarters to Geneva! campaign. Due to the United States' crass violations of its obligations under the United Nations Charter in breaching peace and rejecting the world opinion by illegally attacking Iraq in March 2003, we believe that the United Nations should relocate its headquarters to Geneva until such time that the United States again expresses a willingness to abide by its obligations under the United Nations Charter.

This is both a petition drive as well as an active online lobbying effort. Below is the written appeal to the United Nations to move its headquarters to Geneva. Following this is a "copy & paste" version which can be added to the body of any email client as well as a comprehensive list of email addresses to all United Nations Permanent Missions in New York and all the world's foreign ministries. We encourage people to add their name to the petition, which is being maintained on this site, as well as to send email "copy & pasted" versions of this appeal to the Permanent Mission Organizations and foreign ministries of the world. Please join with us in calling on the United Nations to rebuke the United States for its illegal aggression against Iraq and the world!

This would be a fascinating campaign. Hard to imagine any other campaign in the US political scene that would attract people from as far apart on the political spectrum as this one would.

You do realize, Brian, do you not, that support for this wouldn't be just from those of you who want the UN moved "because the US violates international law". Those folks who see black helicopters flying everywhere and the UN an evil "one world" empire threatening US sovereignty are going to make up the bulk of the people signing your petition (they outnumber you by more than ten to one).

politics as impossible

YES ! ! At least, move the U.N. General Assembly out of the U.S. Whether Geneva or Timbuktu is not really of much importance. The Security Council could rotate among the members sitting on that council, or in some other pattern. Other branches of the UN are already de-centralized.

The problem is to find neutral ground. Also, it would be good if the ground is also geologically stable. The same requirements can be set for a location for the storage of nuclear (rediological) wastes. Maybe the two could, and should, be combined. Easily the most geologically stable continent is Africa. Timbuktu could be a rational choice.

The "right" support for this move, as discussed in comment, is really about getting the U.S. out of the U.N. -- it is problematic whether moving the U.N. our of the U.S. would attract most of its support, or any support, from such "separatist" sentiment. As it is, the U.N. is overly identified with the U.S. by the world outside the U.S. and overly identified with New York City in the U.S., and another problem is the confusion about whether the Secretary General or the Security Council speak for the General Assembly -- best to separate those entities. It's time for such a move.

thats an issue. But im merely alerting people to this site, which caught me by surprise. Already, i find on Vancouver indymedia, those trolls whose hatred at the US's impeding rogue states like the US, also wishing it to be removed....the better for the rogues to have free reign.
