If the Democrats betray their own principles regarding freedom of choice, then they will lose a lot of votes from gays and their supporters. And those lost votes just may be enough to carry the election for Bush.
Kerry's present stand against gay marriages but for "civil unions" just won't cut it for the gay community and for those of us who truly do believe in civil rights. His stand clearly implies that gay "civil unions" cannot and will not afford the rights, privileges, and legal protections that straights have in their marriages.
"Do no harm, do as you will" should be the Democrat's motto regarding people's rights. Gay marriages do not adversely effect me at all, nor do those marriages hurt anyone else. So why in the hell should we care what they do with their lives?
If Kerry wants to compete with Bush for bigotry votes, that's just fine. Those of us who truly believe in civil rights will then have no alternative but to vote for Nader who does have the courage to stand up for gay marriages.
