Media conference at PSU today

War, Peace and the Media"" is the subject of an upcoming all-day conference featuring national and local activists, media professionals and academics. The event is set for Monday, July 12, at Portland State University''s Smith Memorial Ballroom, 1825 S.W. Broadway. Registration starts at 8 a.m., and the conference begins at 9 a.m.
Presenters at the conference include Jack DuVall, president of the International Center for Nonviolent Conflict in Washington, D.C.; radio host and former Oregon legislator JoAnn Bowman; syndicated columnist Geov Parrish, of Seattle; and local independent media professional Robert Jefferson, among others.

Following the day''s discussions, the conference wraps up with a screening of ""Bringing Down a Dictator,"" a documentary about the October 2000 defeat of Serbian dictator Slobodan Milosevic by a nonviolent strategy of honest elections and massive civil disobedience sparked by a popular student movement.

""We mean this to be a conversation among media professionals, academics, students and the public,"" said conference organizer Marie Daniels. ""We hope to help empower activists who want to learn more about media, who want to learn about being the voice of the people in our democracy.""
