On Saturday Portland Independant Media Journalists got a Pre-Tour of the GreenPeace Ship the "Arctic Sunrise" which just docked on Portland, Oregon's Tom McCall Waterfront Park Friday Night. The International Crew is stopping in Portland on their way from South America enroute to Alaska. There will be free public tours on the ship on Sunday and Monday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. including activities for children.
The Arctic Sunrise is one of the three GreenPeace ships operated by a Multi-talented International Crew. GreenPeace, often identified by a big green peace sign, is well known world wide as an educational public awareness group. Greenpeace is a non-profit organization which according to their website "focuses on the the most crucial worldwide threats to our planet's biodiversity and environment.". Greenpeace has a presence in 40 countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific.
Greenpeace has been campaigning against environmental degradation since 1971 when a small boat of volunteers and journalists sailed into Amchitka, an area north of Alaska where the US Government was conducting underground nuclear tests. This tradition of 'bearing witness' in a non-violent manner continues today, and their ships are an important part of all of their campaign work.
