Help Stop Genetic Engineering in Portland TODAY!!!

Join NW RAGE at the Waterfront Blues Festival as we let the public know "Safeway'Genetically Engineered Foods Give us the Blues!" We'll be out petitioning, stickering and talking with people Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Look for the Blue Balloons or people handing out the blue stickers.
If you want to talk with people about what's happening to their food, this is a great opportunity. Over 120,000 people attended last year and because Safeway is the festival's main sponsor the connection is very clear. This festival is a food drive for the Oregon Food Bank, so we are also making sure that people understand that we support this event and the food donations it provides.

If you can't make it out this weekend and would like to get involved, please contact us at 503-239-6841. If you'd like to take action against genetic engineering right now, contact Safeway's Division President Lyle Waterman at 503-657-6349.

See you at the festival!

GE Foods

What are genetically engineered foods?
GE foods contain genetically engineered ingredients. These ingredients are not labeled and are banned in many countries around the world. They are an unnecessary additive to natural food and give us the BLUES!

What foods contain GMO ingredients?
The main ingredients to watch for are corn, soy, canola, and dairy. If it contains these ingredients and its not organic, it gives us the BLUES!

Is Safeway the only company that has GE ingredients?
No, but Safeway is in a position to change the market for GE foods in the United States. Because Safeway has it's own brand, they decide weather or not to use GE ingredients in their own products. Most other companies do not have that choice.

How can I avoid genetically engineered foods?
If you buy USDA Organic, you will be buying GE free. If you buy conventional products that do not contain corn, soy, canola, dairy, or cotton seed, you will also avoid GE ingredients.

If GE food is so bad, how come the FDA doesn't ban it?
The FDA is compromised. The FDA has a "revolving door" with the companies that create GE foods. Many people that serve on the FDA either have previous work experience in the Biotech indusrty or plan to work for Biotech after leaving the FDA. For example, Michael A. Friedman, M.D. the former acting commissioner of the FDA Department of Health and Human Services is now senior vice-president for clinical affairs at G. D. Searle & Co., a pharmaceutical division of Monsanto Corporation.

The Blues Fest

Why are you picking on Safeway?
Safeway has a responsibility to provide safe foods to it's customers. We believe using genetic engineering foods is dangerous and we want Safeway to change it's to GE free.

Why are you here?
This event is head lined by Safeway. We're here to let people know that Safeway is using genetically engineered foods. This is a huge public event where we can let people know about Safeway and GMO.

Are you against the Oregon Food Bank?
No, of course not. We support all organizations that work to help feed the hungry. We think the Blues Fest is a great event!

Do you think people should stop donating conventional food to the food bank?
No, when you're hungry, you eat what you can get. We want to see Safeway make changes to its products so we can see all the foods in this country change.

Why are protesting an event that feeds the hungry?
We're not protesting this event. We're here to promote a better understanding of what GE foods are and encourage Safeway to listen to the public by getting rid of genetically engineered foods.

Meet at 4pm on Sunday and get the word out on genetic engineering! 03.Jul.2004 23:17

Jim

Spend a little time on Sunday to help spread the word about genetically engineered foods.

We're meeting at 4:00PM at the North Entrance to the Blues Festival, by the water fountain. Bring some water (its hot out there) and a friend, or come on your own. We'll have petitions, comment cards, and stickers. So far we've handed out about 2,000 genetic engineering stickers. Let's see if we can hit 5k.

Questions or comments call 503-239-6841 or email  info@nwrage.org

If you can't make Sunday, we'll be out there Monday as well. Check here for the time and place.
